I missed the programme, a pity because we love the scottish scenery too. We used to spend a lot of time there, in the Western Highlands.
The main problem with living there is the winter - it's long, and the days are very short. Plus midgies in summer.
And I agree with others about Matt Baker - he wasn't always like that.

I will be virtually there, strawberries and cream at the ready Overthehills?

Overthehills Tue 05-Jun-18 22:42:04

Not long to go before we’ll be wallowing in Wimbledon NanKate! smile

Greyduster Tue 05-Jun-18 09:19:55

That’s a thumbs up for Matt Baker then! grin. When they co-opt him onto the Country File Calendar panel - and trust me it has to happen, folks - I will well and truly leave the building!

Thanks SueDomin for your recommendation which I will follow as I am still coughing.

Wonderful Overthehills at last I have found a tennis fan on GN. I have been known to be watching the tennis at about 4.00 am from Shanghai I think, to watch Rafa play. I know I am totally mad but don’t care.

Overthehills Mon 04-Jun-18 22:42:35

I’ll be cheering Rafa on too NanKate. And maybe have a whiskey (I’m an Irish girl!) to celebrate if he wins. smile

Gavin not Kevin.

Matt Baker comes from what DH and myself used to call the ‘Connie Huck school of presenting’ ! Do you remember her she was pretty dire too ?

Did anyone see Richard Madeley interview the MP Kevin Williamson ( I think that is his name) ? I found it on Google it was a masterclass in not taking any truck from an MP who won’t answer the question.

Nankate my 'prescription' for a cold is lemon, honey and a splash or two of whisky! That'll help you get a night's sleep.

We do get some very good weather locally. People move out from Aberdeen itself precisely for that reason! Where I am is a bit of a hot spot so when the sun comes out, it's very warm. It was 27.5deg on Saturday, which isn't what most people think of as Scottish weather. Also, we don't get many midges, maybe because it's farmland rather than moorland.

I didn't really notice the presenter as I'm not a Countryfile regular. We accidentally watched the programme on Windsor, too, and now have the Sandringham one on to record.

I agree, you felt Matt Baker was about to pull his forelock!!
travelsafar, she still is - beautiful!

merlotgran Mon 04-Jun-18 10:07:25

Can't stand Matt Baker.

Other than that the programme was really enjoyable.

Grandma70s Mon 04-Jun-18 09:45:08

It was lovely to see the beauty of Balmoral, and the footage of the Queen when she was a pretty little girl, but I do agree that Matt Baker is far too deferential about royalty - and I am a royalist.

Teetime Mon 04-Jun-18 09:03:51

I enjoyed the programme and I haven't enjoyed Countryfile in a very long time far too much of the presenters doing stuff professionals do better- Blue Peter TV!

NfkDumpling Mon 04-Jun-18 07:47:55

Agree about Matt Baker. I usually quite like the whole team but we switched over in the end as Matt just got too sugary and, and - obsequious is the only word that fits! It spoilt a lovely programme. Royalty has a terrible effect on him.

Greyduster Mon 04-Jun-18 07:16:00

I watched it too, and the scenery is unsurpassed. It’s nice to think the Queen has somewhere she can let her hair down and stretch what she has left of her legs in her declining years. Could have done without the obsequious Matt Baker though. Could do without Matt Baker altogether! Sorry Matt Baker fans.

travelsafar Mon 04-Jun-18 06:47:12

It was a wonderful program and how beautiful our Queen was in her younger days. smile

NanKate Mon 04-Jun-18 03:04:22

I also meant to say Overthehills I too was watching the tennis from Roland Garros. I wonder if my favourite Rafa Nadal will be in the Final again with Djokovic or Zerev, whoever is there I am sure it will be a great match.

Sue and Overthehills what a fabulous area to live in. I was taken aback by the sheer beauty of the countryside you are very lucky to live in such an unspoilt area.

Although origininating from the Midlands I am now a southern softie and appreciate the relatively warm area I live in and I wrongly assumed that the weather you get in your area was mostly cold and wet, however the programme showed a very different view with clear skies and a good weather, although I could see how the mist could swirl in very quickly.

The area reminded me of one of my favourite books ‘The 39 Steps’ by John Buchan.

And finally I am writing this in the middle of the night I have a really bad cough and am sitting up in bed drinking Lemsip, but no doubt in your part of the world a drop of whisky would be the order of the day. ?

SueDonim Mon 04-Jun-18 00:37:11

Overthehills, we went to the gathering two or three years ago. Let's just say that it's now been ticked off my list and I need never attend it again. grin

I watched the programme and it was v interesting. My dd's friends were out walking in the hills last year when a couple of dogs ran up to them. The owner called them away and apologised. A few seconds after the woman had walked on, the girls realised it was the queen! She was completely alone, not even a ghillie around, although no doubt there was hidden security.

Overthehills Sun 03-Jun-18 22:24:36

Thanks NanKate, I manages to miss that (watching tennis) so will get it on catch up. We don’t live that far away and keep saying we’ll go to the Braemar Gathering but still haven’t made it in 32 years of living here! hmm

SueDonim Sun 03-Jun-18 21:53:45

Thank you for the tip, I'll get it on catch-up. Balmoral is in my backyard, in a manner of speaking. Or more accurately, I'm in Balmoral's backyard. grin

nigglynellie Sun 03-Jun-18 21:01:41

What a fabulous programme, the old film and the scenery were just amazing. Well worth watching.

NanKate Sun 03-Jun-18 20:54:09

If you want to watch a great programme set at Balmoral do watch tonight’s episode.

I can fully understand why the Royal Family just love it.

The landscape is just breathtaking.
