I think it is hard for a remake to "better" the original version. I don't take much notice of professional "critics" as they seem to have different taste to me! I will reserve judgement until I see this film.

I'm hoping to see it this week. I loved both of the last two versions, and I'm a big fan of Lady Gaga.
I saw the Queen film this week (Bohemian Rhapsody) and thought it was absolutely outstandingly wonderfully brilliant!

I loved this film. Lady Gaga has a fantastic voice when it's stripped back. I had forgotten the original film with Barbara Streisand in it but remember crying at the end as I did with this film, and many around me in the cinema!!

.lemon, this is the fourth ?

Iam64 Tue 23-Oct-18 21:06:50

We took against it but, having met several friends who loved it, who reported in surprised voices that Lady GaGa is brilliant in the film, we've had a think and plan to go and see it.

Having never seen the original, I may enjoy this film better I think, as I can’t compare.

I went to see this last week and thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked the Barbara Streisand version in the 1970s too and thought that this was a good version. The only niggle was that both my friend and I struggled to hear some of the dialogue from Sam Elliott. And Lady Gaga, who I've not exactly been a fan of, was superb; her voice is amazing.

Different strokes. Different folks.

I found this new version powerful and I love the song ‘Shallow’.
Agree about the overuse of the f word.

Anniebach Tue 23-Oct-18 17:54:02

Thank you Sparkle, I have seen the three previous versions, wept over James Mason, but i will remain loyal to the third version, , ‘evergreen’ and ‘With Just One More Look At You’ , surely they can never be eclipsed ?

Nonnie Tue 23-Oct-18 17:35:38

As I never saw the original or any subsequent versions it was all new to me and I thought it was very good. I took it that Lady Gaga could sing but had no idea Bradley Cooper had such a good voice. However, no point going to see it if you have already made up your mind not to like it.

Sparklefizz Tue 23-Oct-18 17:11:58

Her career eclipses his, Anniebach but there is no song to eclipse "Evergreen" which is a truly beautiful song, hard to be eclipsed by any song in my opinion.

Anniebach Tue 23-Oct-18 15:58:01

Sparkle, did any song equal ‘Evergreen’ ?

And I have read this film doesn’t protray the man with a fading career,is this so?

Sparklefizz Tue 23-Oct-18 15:30:51

I thoroughly enjoyed this remake too. Lady Gaga is brilliant (yes, I saw her sing with Tony Bennett, too, and she was great) and apparently Bradley Cooper took guitar, piano and singing lessons for 6 months in order to play his part. I have never seen the Streisand version.

However ..... If you're unhappy about the F word, don't go and see the film because every other word is "F***". I really enjoyed the film and can tolerate the odd f* in context, and I know the story is about a rock star and we know that is how he might speak, but it was over-used in my opinion.

I don't know why the reviews for this film weren't better as like you, Larissa I came out feeling great respect for Lady Gaga as very talented.

Larissa67 Wed 10-Oct-18 03:03:27

I thoroughly enjoyed this modern take on a classic story. I came out with renewed respect for Lady Gaga as an actor as well as composer/ singer and for Bradley Cooper as director. All the lead actors seemed to fit the part so well. Much of the dialogue felt improvised and naturalistic.
This film is quite long but feels like a big screen production with the music (rock, pop and country) a key element. I felt myself comparing it to La La Land and found A star is born a much better film all round.
I'd love to hear what others thought of it.

Grannyknot Tue 09-Oct-18 10:05:28

... personal reviews that is, if you've seen it.

Grannyknot Tue 09-Oct-18 10:05:12

Please post reviews on here! smile

KatyK Tue 09-Oct-18 09:40:22

I never take much notice of the critics but the Mail on Sunday said it's fantastic. Must be true then smile

paddyann Mon 08-Oct-18 20:52:03

Lady Gaga has a fantastic voice her duets with Tony Bennett are terrific.I loved the Streisand version but I'll go see this one as I'm sure she's very capable of making a great job of it

Grannyknot Mon 08-Oct-18 18:47:29

Coolgran he is all mine (ever since I saw "Mask" - he was Cher's bad boy lover).

Anniebach Mon 08-Oct-18 18:46:02

The Streisand and Kristopherson one is very good

Coolgran65 Mon 08-Oct-18 18:15:03

I'm going to see it tomorrow night.
Especially as the gorgeous Sam Elliott is in it.

J52 Mon 08-Oct-18 18:14:32

It got a panning by the press.
Out of interest I searched for it on Netflix and came up with 4 other versions.
One in 1979 with Kriss Kristopherson and Barbara Streisand.
I might watch it.

MiniMoon Mon 08-Oct-18 18:07:33

I'm not going to bother with it either annie. I don't think any remake could be as good as the original.

Anniebach Mon 08-Oct-18 17:57:53

Again.

No interest in this one.

Bradley Cooper is no James Mason and Lady Gaga is no

Barbara Streisand
