Oh holy night.

True story - from John Rutter at Albert Hall, no less.

Somebody wrote a carol for the troops in the trenches. He gave it to the singer to take over there with her. It's the one that begins,

"Have yourself a very Merry Christmas..."

When she looked it went on,

"It may be your last..."

She changed the words.

Silent Night for me, or Harry Belafonte.

I work in retail...wall to wall Christmas songs all day. Just fed up with them...

I have only heard this Irish song twice and love it. Just wish I could remember the witty words. It has a group of elderly men sitting in a pub singing "Galway Bay... And the bells ring out for Christmas Day" It has a catchy tune too.
Anybody know it, and if so could you write some of the words down so that I can sing it around the house, please? ,

"Three Kings From Persian Lands Afar", actually it is a Christmas carol composed by Peter Cornelius.

Three Kings from Persian Lands Afar reminds me of school days. We learnt this in the choir and we were on the radio singing it (years ago) and my darling Dad taped it. Don't know where that tape is now but he was so proud that I'd actually made being on the radio.
Just another Winter's Tale - David Essex. The Pogues & Kirsty McCall Fairytale of New York.

Lisaholder Sun 16-Dec-18 14:38:40

My favourite is Chestnuts roasting on and open fire buy I also like one in royal Davids city

Doris19 Sun 16-Dec-18 14:47:37

Think the song you are looking for is Fairytale of New York which has these words If you Google it and ask for the lyrics you will be able to join in with the singing ?

Lioness68 Sun 16-Dec-18 14:51:02

A Winter's Tale by David Essex, anything sung by Jim Reeves and Lonely This Christmas by Mud - that was No 1 in 1974 when my soldier husband was in Belfast for Christmas.

Theoddbird when I was 17 I worked full-time as a waitress, you have my sympathy, even now Frosty the Snowman & I saw Mummy kissing Santa Claus make my hackles rise. I do love Christmas & enjoy a lot of the songs & hymns[thlsmile

I love to hear "Sleigh Ride" b y ? Anderson. Such a catchy tune and good lyrics.

Greyduster Sun 16-Dec-18 15:29:19

I like “Chestnuts roasting on an open fire” and “Driving home for Christmas”, but I also like “The Shepherd’s Farewell” by Berlioz. It’s very soothing. Carols? Harold Darke’s arrangement of “In the Bleak Midwinter”.

Greyduster Sun 16-Dec-18 15:31:27

Ooh yes, Herbie9 - I’d forgotten about that one. Leroy Anderson. Super!

Juliet27 Sun 16-Dec-18 15:52:23

Yes hellsbelles...I do like Driving Home for Christmas, but it makes me sad as both my children live in Australia and it’s ages since we’ve had a Christmas together.

Arto1s Sun 16-Dec-18 15:55:33

Sweetpea60 is maybe American or Canadian, hence the spelling? I have too many favourites to list here, both traditional Carols and popular music. “In the Bleak Mid Winter” would be right up there, as would Annie Lennox “Walking in a Winter Wonderland.”
Happy Christmas everyone!

My favourite is Have Yourself a Merry Little Xmas by Johnny Mathis. Brings back memories of my working days and xmas eve wine bar get togethers.

I'm another vote for Gaudete by Steeleye Span - it was playing in my local Tesco a couple of days ago, while I was sitting in their 'Costa' with my Christmassy Coffee grin ........................ I was 'singing it out loud', in Latin wink, and it took me back 45yrs to my eldest son's first Christmas.

GabriellaG54 Sun 16-Dec-18 16:16:20

This version of Gaudete is spine tingling.
I like a bit of Xmas music while I'm putting the tree up and wrapping etc. I've been out of retail long enough for the songs not to be annoying anymore. ??☃️
