Mastermind misery

Did anyne watch the risible performance of England cricketer Monty Panesar on a recent Mastermind programme?
Not only did he perform miserably in his specialist subject (Sikh religion) but his general knowledge was zero, in fact, less than a 5 yr old.
An absolute disgrace, given that he was born and bred in Luton.
Talk about being insular...
Your thoughts?

GabriellaG54 Tue 15-Jan-19 15:27:40

The day will never dawn when humans cease to judge others.

humptydumpty Tue 15-Jan-19 15:55:46

GG I agree that everyone judges but not all start up a post to deliberately express their (negative) judgment.

Jabberwok Tue 15-Jan-19 16:23:02

Surely it was only a bit of fun as was Celebrity University Challenge both of which were watched with great enjoyment in this house. Even better we managed to answer some questions that the contestants floundered over!! People under perform for a variety of reasons, and to be so critical about something so unimportant is just plain ridiculous. On both fronts its was in aid of charity which has to be a good thing; that people didn't perform like Einstein is irrelevant, not something to be picked over and crititised by people who consider themselves academically superior.

Nonnie Tue 15-Jan-19 16:30:16

Jabberwok yes, that's what I said twice on this thread apart from your last sentence. It does appear that this thread was started to show that someone thought they were superior, I hadn't thought of that.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Tue 15-Jan-19 16:32:25

I didn't see that particular edition but have been astonished at how badly many of these 'celebrities' have done on Mastermind. Nerves may come into it of course and that's the kindest excuse I can think of.
I was lead to believe that crib sheets are/were provided for the celebrity version - if that is the case then they make me feel like Einstein by comparison.

mcem Tue 15-Jan-19 16:34:45

Yes nonnie. "Thought they were superior!"
A fairly shaky premise and I've seen no evidence at all of superiority.
Delusions of adequacy perhaps?

Jalima1108 Tue 15-Jan-19 16:36:52

Possibly you are right about humans judging each other GabriellaG54

However, judging someone by one disastrous appearance on a quiz show is rather like posters judging you by your posts on here.

Is that the right thing to do?

Nonnie Tue 15-Jan-19 16:40:18

In retrospect I think perhaps we should all have ignored this thread. I'm leaving.

GabriellaG54 Tue 15-Jan-19 17:03:56

humptydumpty
I expressed my thoughts on the programme and invited others to give theirs.
Please don't tell me that no-one else states their thoughts and invites comment.
Pretty much the same as GNers penning their negative views about a family member's actions then asking us for feedback.

Jabberwok Tue 15-Jan-19 17:09:09

I agree with you Nonnie! I think it's rather a silly conversation and certainly not worth squabbling about!!! I still think it's a pity to make such a mountain out of a very unimportant molehill!

GabriellaG54 Tue 15-Jan-19 17:17:43

I commented on his performance, not his name, not his race, only his effort on that programme.
There are critics in every walk of life who get paid to judge and critique tv programmes, food, you name it...
Surely I have the right to do that without others who disagree bri gong it down to schoolyard level.
If you don't agree, say your piece but don't start accusing me of having a biased agenda against anyone's name or country of origin.
That is judgemental and something that the majority here supposedly deem to be wrong.
Did I say he was thick?
Did I comment on his career?
Do tv critics write critiques of every aspect of an actors life or just the performance they are critiquing.
The answers to those 3 questions are no, no, no.

GabriellaG54 Tue 15-Jan-19 17:18:58

* bringing

GabriellaG54 Tue 15-Jan-19 17:23:07

Anyway...I'm not going to invest any more time on this thread as it's become about vilifying me and not about the subject matter.
I'm out grin

mcem Tue 15-Jan-19 17:47:46

Hardly a critique if you invite readers to laugh at him!
But please don't let us keep you.
Back to the proofreading maybe?

Jalima1108 Tue 15-Jan-19 17:52:51

I've just re-read the OP
Your thoughts?
They have not changed.

Coolgran65 Tue 15-Jan-19 17:58:45

"""Don't say you have never ever judged anyone, even without putting it into words. That would be unbelievable.""

GabriellaG54 yes, of course we all have our judgements. What I said was that perhaps you were being 'over judgemental' or perhaps over generalising to say 'even a Coronation Street actor or a Comedian'. Heaven forbid that all actors and comedians are considered dim.

Luckygirl Tue 15-Jan-19 18:12:44

I felt so sorry for this poor man.

PECS Tue 15-Jan-19 18:22:44

Monty... fairly British I think! I
Quizzes and ability to answer general knowledge questions under pressure is not a reflection of your worth as a person! He is/ was a top class cricketer. He may or may not be a really nice chap, kind. caring etc.
Why are we thinking to criticise him personally?
If the OP had been more general about people prepared to put themselves on the spit for charity but who find it harder than they thought it might have seemed a little less 'pointed'

PECS Tue 15-Jan-19 18:23:05

spot not spit!,

M0nica Tue 15-Jan-19 21:12:25

I would have thought Monty Panasar would have been well used to stressful situations where all eyes are on him and he would have had hours and hours of psychological training to be able t cope with any situation where he was in this situation, not just when he is on the cricket field.

It could be that he simply doesn't have much general knowledge. It is not a necessity in order to be a successful world class cricketer.

Anja Tue 15-Jan-19 22:45:48

Don’t equate intelligence with good general knowledge. The latter is a question of a good memory.

Maggiemaybe Tue 15-Jan-19 23:59:48

Or many hours (mis)spent at pub quizzes and watching Eggheads. Speaking from experience and having just got home from yet another thrashing. Who the heck knows how many UK postcodes start with a single letter anyway? grin

Niobe Wed 16-Jan-19 09:47:01

I enjoy quiz shows and on numerous occasions have watched as a contestant (celebrity or not) 'crashes and burns' over seemingly simple questions but I have never, ever thought to take to an Internet forum to invite others to comment on it. GG54 should realise that her own actions are questionable at best.

ffinnochio Wed 16-Jan-19 10:20:06

And yet you choose to comment, Niobe, and in what way is this particular OP questionable?

Just thinking of the hammering some celebs get on here.

I think there has been some subtle but deliberate wilful pickiness over this OP, because of previous clashes between particular members of this forum which had nothing to do with the OP, but more to do with who posted. Still, it was a useful vehicle to continue with the snarkiness, I suppose.
