I thought tonight's episode was lovely and very poignant. A lot of strands to the story, but it all came together beautifully.
And all those gorgeous baby flowers!!

All series of Homefires are on Britbox.

I have watched the first 7 series as they are available on Canadian Netflix. I have all three books on which the series was based, and I sometimes use excerpts from the first book when I am teaching maternity nursing. It can be helpful for students to hear about and see actual births in order for them to understand what's involved and how the actual nursing care is provided.

My DH was present when our son was born in December 1964.
So at least that bit was believable! I used to love this series and still do, up to a point, but like others, I think they're running out of story lines!

Yes apparently when the NHS began, women who had never been near a doctor, began to come forward with their "little women's problems" which they had put up with for years but were easily sorted and repaired,
Makes you weep.

For instance in the 1930s a woman might have had a prolapsed womb and not had surgical correction. I had an old lady patient whose own father had been a doc in the East End ,and she knew a bit about how bad it all was. She herself grew up to become a woman of great strength and fortitude and got a medal for it.

My friend told me I should watch this latest episode because the poor middle-aged woman (needing a hysterectomy) reminded her of me!
Thanks df but I know she meant well. I do feel that I'm being pulled in all directions. Poorly DH, ancient parents, stressed out DD and other DC and of course the wonderful DGC.

I thought that actress (Samantha Spiro) and her mother were believable but everyone else was wooden. IMO.

Turner family I find just a little weird. I don't enjoy it as I did.

I would imagine it finished three/four years ago. Repeats were being shown quite recently, not sure which channel. The theme music was lovely, female singers that sent chills down your spine.

Yes I remember signing a petition for its return. I can't understand why it was axed. It was perfect Sunday night viewing.

It hasn't been on for years, I can't remember when it finished.
I really enjoyed it and was annoyed as well when it didn't return- without any explanation!

I’ve never seen Homefires is it available on any of the online players? Or shall I hold off trying to watch if the ending ruined it?

We were cross when Home Fires was taken off. A really good series and should have continued.

Seeing Fenella Woolgar reminded me of the series that used to be on ITV called Home Fires which finished very abruptly and never returned.
I don't know why they left it on a cliffhanger and didn't make another series.

I think they need to concentrate on the nuns more. Jenny Agutter and Judy Psrfitt are wonderful actors and Fenella Woolgar has been utterly wasted so far. It was great to see them move centre stage this week.

The younger midwives just aren't as interesting. They seem to have run out of storylines for Trixie, and Val and Lucille lack charisma in my view. Nice capable young women that you'd be happy to have deliver your baby, but that's it.

I love Call the Midwives. I enjoy the turners, and Phylis and sister Monica Joan are my favourites. I would like Trixie who is so sweet to find someone, she had some dark story lines for a while there and deserves a bit of joy for once. (And for the viewers at home!)
I enjoy my Sunday weep watching this, long lost family has the same effect on me!

I enjoyed tonight's episode too. Interesting that in 1965 men started to be present at births in hospitals and the husband with the pile of medical books wasn't that far removed from those who use Google for information on their phones today.
Did Sister Julianne really go to see The Sound of Music twice in one week?!

I thought it was quite a weak episode, grasping for a decent storyline. And could Dr Turner not afford tickets for he and his wife to see the Sound of Music?

I will say, though, I get a shiver run through me whenever a baby is born. That’s always special.

Tonight's episode was better but Shelagh does look as if she is always smiling through gritted teeth- especially when he was working late.

Enjoyed tonight's episode. The best one of the series so far. I must be in a minority as I like the Turners, but I wish they'd stop this business of the two little girls saying everything in unison. It doesn't sound cute, it sounds weird.

His acting has never been very good, so writing books is probably a fall back when the series folds.

His name appears as the author of the book but I can imagine there would be collaboration with his wife. He’s also written a book telling the story of his family in seven maladies.
