I agree;I went to see 1917 the other day and the trailer for DC came on. I pondered on why I hadn't raved about it but decided that most of the funny bits were in the trailer so I'd already seen them before I saw the film. Dickens is funny [eg The Pickwick Papers] but it's a gentle humour, not funny ha ha stuff. To me it was more a film to see on dvd [which I shall probably get] unlike1917 which takes cinema to a whole new level.

I went to see this last week.. Not sure I like it very much maybe I am a purist... I did not find it funny.. yes Dev cracks some of his humour.. is that how Dickens wanted to portray this character?

I don’t think there should be a rule that says something can only be remade if the previous one is dated - it should be more about the content and the artistry. From what I’ve read this one is really good so it sounds like it’s a worthy remake of something that will continue to evolve as new directors come forward and put their own stamp on things - and rightly so imo.

I agree that remakes are important and often very, very good. But not always necessary unless previous versions are really dated. Some famous movies have been remade with little success. Having said that, new versions of Dickens have been done over and over again and everyone has their favourite.
I just hope they don't try re-making the Railway Children....

Laughing at Dickens? Surely he is one of the best novelists at writing pathos, tragedy and comedy? Lots of David Copperfield is very funny.

Ah yes, SirChenjin, remakes okay, but the keyword there is "good". I once wasted several hours of my life watching a totally dire remake of "Psycho", can't imagine why because it would be impossible to better the original. On the other hand, the BBC remake of Bleak House a few years ago was absolutely excellent.

Really can't decide about David Copperfield, although the reviews have been good and the cast list is excellent. Not sure I'd want to be laughing at Dickens ...

Just seen it. It was ok and the acting was very good, but it didn't really work for me. The cinema was packed, though, and everyone else was laughing a lot. I'd put it in the category of 'just as happy to watch the dvd' films.

If they didn’t do remakes we wouldn’t have had several enjoyable years of Aidan Turner and his scythe or Colin Firth and Matthew Macfadyen and their brooding good looks and britches. The world is a far better place with good remakes and handsome leading men <fans self>

Saw a bit of this ( trailer) and it looks really good, will probably go with a friend to see it, as not sure men will enjoy it ( could be wrong.)

Agreed ladymuck, which is why they have to keep doing a 'new take' by altering the original story in some way through the casting or time frame. I don't want to run down Teetime's thread because I'm sure the new version is very good, but I am not a fan of 'new takes' as I prefer to stick to the original story. I'm sure the new one will be enjoyed by many and will be very entertaining though.
I'm sure this is why Downton Abbey is so popular, because it is a new story.

I can remember the 1956 BBC series. My grandmother insisted I be allowed to stay up and watch it because she was a huge Dickens fan.

David Copperfield will always be my favourite for that reason.

Paul Whitehouse has been promoted from the pawnbroker in 1999 to Mr Peggotty in the new version!

It is though Hugh Laurie, Tilda Swinton, Peter Capaldi, Ben Whishaw, Dev Patel, Paul Whitehouse- fantastic cast and a fresh new delivery with some real surprises. Sunday Times critic loved it too.

....and the 1999 version also had Trevor Eve, Zoe Wanamaker, Pauline Quirke, Michael Elphick, Ian McKellen, Cherie Lunghi, Imelda Staunton, Dawn French, Paul Whitehouse, Nicholas Lyndhurst. The list goes on. The new one would have to be pretty good to beat that starry cast!

'David Copperfield' was done to perfection in 1999 with little Daniel Radcliffe as young David, Maggie Smith, Alun Armstrong and Emilia Fox. I just can't imagine wanting to see yet another version of DC!

I’m going to see this on Tuesday with a friend. I love Dickens and I’m pleased to hear it’s good.

supurb superb

I really like Dev Patel, he's come a long way since he played the rather gawky young man in Slumdog Millionaire, saw him last in the supurb Lion, where he was all grown up. However, still haven't seen 1917 due to bouts of extreme coughing in our household, so that will have to come first. Hope both films linger in local cinemas for a while.

I just love Dev Patel. Hope this comes our way soon and in the original English.
