I remember a live interview she did some years ago on woman's hour. I remember being quiet shocked at some of her answers, and so was the interviewer.
Ann's response to the surprise was literally "I couldn't care less what people think"

In Who Do You Think You Are, I think Anne Reid was the one whose ancestor had defrauded someone (a relative?) and been transported. She was really annoyed at the victim for having prosecuted, but he had been ruined by the fraud, which wasn't a first offence. I thought her attitude was awful.

I can understand being sympathetic to someone who was transported, obviously; but she had no thought at all for the victim of the crime.

Last Tango is brilliant television. The cast is talented, not a single weak link. Sally Wainwright is one of the best writers tv has.
I'd been feeling amazed by the negative comments about Ann Reid's personality rather than discussing Celia. Then I remembered, I don't watch Woody Allen films because I can't separate the art from the actor. smile

Yes Woody Allen still makes me shudder Iam64 strange how some people have more of an effect on you than others.

I love the bitchy female characters, Anne Reid, Maureen Lipman in Corrie, Blanche in Corrie whose name escapes me. Not forgetting Patricia Routledge.

Can someone remind me where Celia’s money comes from.
Was she well off before she met Allan?
She was living in a granny annexe with her D when it started.
That huge bungalow looks very expensive.

I have just turned off "Last Tango......" because I had forgotten how depressing the final series had become the last time it was on. Celia is such a stuck up bitch and Alan's daughter so needy I realised I really wasn't enjoying it and so off it went.
What a shame I had been looking forward to it coming back! hmm

Washerwoman Tue 25-Feb-20 15:17:23

Recovering from a bug I thought I would watch the very first episode to remind myself of Celia and Alan's first meeting ,and the earlier characters. Now I'm hooked and watching more. Sally Wainwrights dialogue is so spot on and hilarious sometimes. And it's filmed on our doorstep so enjoying place spotting.

Anne Reid is a very versatile actress. Anyone remember seeing her in ‘The Mother’ I think the film was called, she had a fling with Daniel Craig of all people! She had to strip off and she must have been well in her 60’s, possibly 70’s.
I didn’t like the film, it was a bit of a weird one if I remember rightly, and Daniel’s character was not very nice.
Definitely remember her as Val Barlow, huge shock when she was electrocuted!

Jodieb Tue 25-Feb-20 16:29:17

I was rather disappointed with the first show. Twaddle about nothing. I hope it improves. Maybe it's gone on too long.

NotTooOld Tue 25-Feb-20 16:35:57

I've not watched this before but am enjoying the new series. Lovely scenery. Can someone give me the headsup on who is who and a bit of background, please?

Juliet27 Tue 25-Feb-20 16:42:50

How long have you got?!!

Juliet27 Tue 25-Feb-20 16:48:59

NotTooOld. This will give you an idea of some of the characters.

Thank you, Juliet! That was very helpful. It's certainly a complicated situation, isn't it? grin

Juliet27 Tue 25-Feb-20 17:04:56

It certainly is - and that’s just the tip of the iceberg!

SueDonim Tue 25-Feb-20 17:10:29

I’m grin at it being a ‘huge shock’ when Deirdre Barlow was electrocuted, Calendargirl! I do recall that, actually.

Gillian annoys me with her...speech...affectation...of.of...hesitation...which she...she also does...in...other...roles. It’s.....irritating.

Sorry but how do I start a new discussion?

Oopsadaisy3 Tue 25-Feb-20 18:15:25

Ginster click on Forums, then select the category and it will say ‘ start a new discussion, on my iPad it’s yellow so easy to see.

BlueBelle Tue 25-Feb-20 18:24:37

I think Deidre would have had a huge shock too suedonim as it was Valerie Barlow not Deidre who was killed ???

Dottydots Tue 25-Feb-20 18:38:02

I felt there was too much going on and too many people appearing that I had to keep stopping the recording and run it back to try to remember who everyone was. I got there in the end, though. It helped even more when I put on the sub-titles.
I'm looking forward to the next episode.

Gemini17892 Tue 25-Feb-20 20:22:49

Yes I agree. Too much going on. Didn’t like the children’s parts . Couldn’t see much in the dark farmhouse.
Many good series seem to run out of steam after a couple of runs.

SueDonim Tue 25-Feb-20 22:11:54

Hahaha, Bluebell! grin You can tell I’m not a Corrie-watcher. blush

Gingster Tue 25-Feb-20 23:39:21

Thanks Oopsadaisy3 ??

I decided to catch up with the earlier episodes before it started again, as the ones I'd watched previously had not really made sense to me not knowing the back story
IIRC Alan had a house that he had been renting out, as well as his own house, Celia's money I think went towards affording the Harrogate house, a house like that in Harrogate would be very dear, I got the impression that she'd been left comfortably off
Houses like the bungalow are not as dear in Calderdale as many other places, and could Caroline have inherited from Kate [who presumably also had property in the Harrogate area] when she was widowed to help fund the new house and the restoration, as well as her share in the Harrogate house
I have enjoyed place spotting too, especially in the earlier episodes

Calendargirl Wed 26-Feb-20 07:13:25

Caught up on new episode last night. I enjoyed it, and could remember what was going on, more or less.
I think some of you are a bit hard on Celia. Yes, she is quite forthright in her views, but you know where you are with her. She has been like that from the start, so Alan should have realised what he was taking on. I find his sitting on the fence, not wanting to upset anyone, rather irritating.
Think he won’t last long in the supermarket if he gets the job.

Iam64 Wed 26-Feb-20 08:56:57

Well said washerwoman, Sally Wainwright is a genius.
Celia is exactly as she was portrayed at the beginning of the series, a rather shallow, snobbish, self centred, selfish woman. I laughed again when Alan says " she reads the Daily Mail" as a means of describing the difference between them. Celia is equally dismissive of Guardian readers.
The moorland, countryside and housing in the area of filming is close to the hearts of us northern women, as is Sally Wainwright's ability to write dialogue we understand.

Calendargirl - I'm not sure Alan will work in the supermarket, though I think he'd be excellent there. Our BandQ is run by men like Alan. I wonder if he's going to find himself either as a volunteer with an organisation helping lads like the one arrested for stealing "a square meal", or if he'll end up bringing said lad home to live in the bungalow......
I love the children by the way. Very entertaining. I find all the characters likeable and believable in their own way, including Celia
