It’s just started and I’m liking it straightaway! Stellar cast. Imelda Staunton (love her). Francesca Anuns.

The series follows three adult siblings – Helen, Jake and Natalie – whose lives are thrown into disarray when their recently widowed mum Vivien declares she’s fallen for a new man, retired GP Mark.

As Vivien nears her 70th birthday, her children grow suspicious when Mark begins to shift her priorities away from her family.

Gorgeous location see the photo!

Yes, it's a great drama! And no hanging in until next week either!

J52 Wed 26-Feb-20 09:05:33

Loving it. I do like Stephen Rea, he’s a great actor. I remember him in the 1960s northern comedy ‘ I Didn’t Know You Cared’. When I was a child!

He must have been very young, it was in black and white, and also starred a young Liz Smith.

I don’t think it will turn out to be anything obvious. I agree Imelda Staunton’s character is very creepy.
Roll on tonight!

Yes, Imelda is playing a great part.
Beware the friendly, helpful neighbour.

Two possible candidates for setting the car on fire, the neighbour and the new husband.

Was the woman George met in the pub the one who Helen fired at the hospital ? Getting her revenge ?
I think the body in the bag is Mark, mum is injured and in surgery. Think there are lots of red herrings but it was an accident with the balcony collapsing due to rot from sea air. Mum has now lost love of her life

Yes, the woman in the bar was the vengeful sacked hospital woman. Poor George has obviously been targeted for revenge. He seems a bit wet.

I think your dates for ‘I Didn’t Know You Cared’ are a bit early. Surely it was more like the 80’s, or even the 70’s?

Was Stephen Rea in ‘The Crying Game’, which was ground breaking at the time if I remember correctly?

Calendargirl Wed 26-Feb-20 09:57:40

Just checked, IDKYC was 1975/1976.

J52 Wed 26-Feb-20 10:01:35

Ah yes, I’m going back too far, as it was in B/w. I forgot when colour tv was widely available.
Yes he was good in the Crying Game.
I wondered about his obviously dyed hair as I’ve seen him in things with his grey mop.
I wondered if it was only for this part, to show some kind of character vanity.
Francesca Annis also looks great.

Happygirl79 Wed 26-Feb-20 10:24:50

I have really enjoyed the series so far but really the doctor is so scruffy and unlikeable surely a glamorous older woman wouldn't fancy him?

suziewoozie Wed 26-Feb-20 11:06:56

I have known many orthopaedic surgeons. They are generally sophisticated, well groomed and very affluent. After retiring from full time work, they often have lucrative earnings from private practice or a whole range of part time positions.Mark does not fit the bill. I know the daughter checked him out but .....

HurdyGurdy Wed 26-Feb-20 11:25:20

Oooh, I've just thought - was Mark an paediatric orthopaedic doctor? Because Mary next door lost a baby/child. I wonder if she was involved in some way with the child's death?

I'm also wondering if Vivienne is a "black widow" and in fact, she's the one after Marks' money?

Can't wait for tonight's episode!

sarahellenwhitney Wed 26-Feb-20 11:31:41

Do you mean Francesca Annis? I was fascinated with the first instalment and had to watch when it was shown again an hour later . Continuing to do the same for the following episodes .ITV excel themselves and I have a recording of another ITV 'must watch again' this being Apple Tree Yard. You can't beat ITV when it comes to a family drama.

Callistemon Wed 26-Feb-20 11:47:06

I did wonder if Mark had set up a false online persona.

Anyway, being an orthopaedic surgeon doesn't guarantee wealth if he was a gambler or lost everything he owned in some other dealings.

I don't think that Vivienne is a black widow, she seems too guileless.

Urmstongran Wed 26-Feb-20 11:48:34

Yes sew I did mean FA.

I’ve just watched part 2. The car being set on fire ... the new husband after he left the beach to cook the steaks?? Mary?? I don’t think it’s the hospital admin lady who was made redundant. On the other hand ....

Really looking forward to tonight’s episode!

storynanny Wed 26-Feb-20 11:51:40

I hadn’t thought about the villain maybe being the widow , that would be a good plot twist.
How did sacked woman get young daughters number to send that photo from the pub?

Urmstongran Wed 26-Feb-20 11:52:06

Ooh Calli I never thought of that twist! Maybe Vivienne (FA) went on line to find herself a rich man.

But then, she was already wealthy, so would she really want to plot in this way just to become richer?

Calendargirl Wed 26-Feb-20 13:09:38

sarahellenwhitney

Sorry to be picky, but I think Apple Tree Yard was done by the BBC.

Urmstongran Wed 26-Feb-20 13:24:54

Just had a thought.

Was it too coincidental for Mark’s daughter to be on 48 hour on call due to a train crash? He probably just pretended his daughter was calling. He wanted Vivienne to be near Gibraltar.

Surely Vivienne could have checked the local news on her iPhone!

soop Wed 26-Feb-20 13:46:29

What are those pills? hmm

soop Wed 26-Feb-20 13:50:37

Is it Mark in the body bag? Did Mary do the deed? wink

Calendargirl Wed 26-Feb-20 13:53:03

Does his daughter even exist, let alone being a doctor?

soop Wed 26-Feb-20 13:55:07

Calendargirl I think not.

merlotgran Wed 26-Feb-20 13:56:27

When Vivien's children heard the news that she'd married Mark they were horrified that he would now get all her money if anything happened to her.

Not if she doesn't change her will in Mark's favour, surely?

Has she done that yet?

jo1book Wed 26-Feb-20 13:57:06

libra10 Wed 26-Feb-20 14:01:59

I've watched the first two episodes, and thoroughly enjoying.

I love a mystery/thriller, with several twists and turns, and this series definitely fits the bill!

With 'Last Tango' being shown weekly, and several dramas scheduled for the coming weeks, TV is definitely looking up!

Curlywhirly Wed 26-Feb-20 14:02:48

Hm, think I have got something wrong - the person in the bodybag was obviously dead; there appears to be another person in hospital (I was thinking they were one and the same). So.... the person in hospital can't be a member of the family, because the daughter showed no reaction when the police said there had been news; so maybe that is Mark (or could it be the woman from the NHS that was fired and was stalking George?).
The tablets were Viagra, Mary pinched them, as she was trying to sabotage Mark and Vivienne's holiday. I don't think Mary took the Viagra, as she was reading the leaflet that came with them. Still think Mary is the villain, but..... is that too obvious????
