Noticed there is a new version of Van der Valk starting tonight on ITV. Wonder if they will use the same theme tune?

V der V was a bit of a let down last night...I agree about Marc Warren, Gulligranny...
Preferred the original series with Barry Foster...and the catchy tune!...so might watch it on Talking Pictures Channel 81...thanks EllanVannin.

Might give it a second chance next Sunday....?

Too long, got bored by half way and started doing something on laptop. Made me realise once again why I don't watch ITV if I can possibly help it, take out the adverts and it may of kept my interest. If I watch it again I will record it and whiz through the breaks. Perhaps losing that half hour will improve it.

We watched it and thought it could have been condensed. Amsterdam was good to see and a touch of Eye Level in the theme tune. I will do the same justnoneed and record the next one to avoid the ads.

Why is Sunday night horrible murder night on both mainstream channels? It's not my idea of entertainment and actually makes me wonder about the viewing public.

I enjoyed it, bar the police woman keep asking her boss about if he had a girl friend.

I too liked the nerdy guy.

I've just finished watching it - bit slow at first but I stayed with it. Enjoyed the location shots as went to Amsterdam for our Silver Wedding Anniversary and will stick with it. Think there are only three episodes.

Calendargirl Sun 03-May-20 21:58:29

Tonight’s episode not much improvement on last week’s sadly. Find all the characters completely charmless and not at all likeable.
Can’t take to it at all.

Nandalot Sun 03-May-20 22:14:22

Not keen on it at all. Really disappointed. Tonight’s episode didn’t even have many lovely views of Amsterdam in it. I was willing to give up after a couple of minutes but DH wanted to persevere but I heard him snoring a few times through it.

Vaguely remember the first series and definitely remember the thyme tune. Wish they had used the original theme tune as the main tune. Watched the first episodes all the way through but got bored with the second one and switched off, too slow.

NanKate Tue 05-May-20 11:38:11

Very disappointed. An opportunity lost ?

Toadinthehole Tue 05-May-20 12:55:49

Wasn’t bowled over to be honest, although I barely remember the first time round. I recognised the music though. Seemed to be the same. Didn’t like Marc Warren. In my opinion, he wasn’t right for this part.

eazybee Tue 05-May-20 13:01:51

Preposterous story, but quite liked Marc Warren's hard stare, nearly as threatening as that of Paddington.

Floradora9 Tue 05-May-20 19:08:35

Does anyone else think he looks like Adam Faith in Budgie ? Cannot say I ever watched it but he keeps reminding me of him even more with that terrible Cockney accent .

merlotgran Tue 05-May-20 19:26:09

Yes he does look like Adam Faith in Budgie and Sting in Quadrophenia.

Calendargirl Wed 06-May-20 07:18:32

Not keen on Marc Warren in any parts he’s been in, I don’t know why.
To me he looks too young and hip for the part. Agree about the accent.
I wouldn’t have much faith in any of the police officers, except for the new nerdy one. They all look shambolic and rather incompetent.
As for the pathologist, either throwing up, sleeping on a mortuary table or guzzling sandwiches on the job, hope he’s washed his hands well....

MissTree Wed 06-May-20 07:32:42

I gave up on it too. I must be hard to please because I try these new series and don’t like many of them.

I am too old for the subject . It’s too dark. I can’t hear it. There’s too much swearing / violence. It’s too silly.

I’m vaguely interested in Twins at the moment. Enjoying the scenery and wondering how it will end.

Witzend Wed 06-May-20 07:46:52

Not mad about it but will probably watch the rest. Some of the dialogue was very difficult to hear. Although he’s a good actor I thought MW was not quite right for the part somehow.
I order why they didn’t use the brilliant original theme tune? I remember a recent precedent for doing this - the remake of Mapp and Lucia. IIRC they used the original opening graphics, too.

Another thing, does anyone else find that ‘female-boss-of central-character-male-detective’ has turned into a something of a cliche? Especially when she tries to put a spoke in his investigations?

LullyDully Wed 06-May-20 08:10:05

Not too young calendargirl, he is 53 according to Wikipedia. Quite unlikable.

Calendargirl Wed 06-May-20 10:31:46

Goodness, is he 53? Talk about policemen looking younger!

I agree about the female police bosses. Lewis, nearly all of the Scandi dramas, can’t think of any more off hand.

In real life, we have Cressida Dick leading the Met, and others round the country, so I suppose it mirrors how things have changed, probably for the better.

Calendargirl Wed 06-May-20 10:34:08

And of course, we always had Miss Marple.

Not a real detective obviously, but she ran rings round all of them!

Good old Joan Hickson!

Rosalyn69 Thu 07-May-20 15:15:26

I watched the first episode last night and really enjoyed it but then I like Marc Warren. Watching episode 2 tonight.

Floradora9 Thu 07-May-20 15:30:47

I had recorded some Miss Marple's programme with the lovely Joan Hickson ages ago . We are loving seeing them again .

trisher Thu 07-May-20 15:38:49

I like it. Loads of holes in the stories of course but it is entertaining and I think Marc Warren is OK.

oscaro11 Thu 07-May-20 15:46:36

My DH likes it, says it’s watchable, me not so much. Think a different lead actor may have made the difference, this one seems to have little personality and just the same ‘look’ in most scenes. I hoped it would be better to fill the hole on Sunday nights after the end of Belgravia. Bring back Wallander, Morse,Lewis please! Also Poirot and a better lead actor in Midsomer Murders.

Sillymoo Mon 11-May-20 18:04:49

I think they should have called it something else as the characters and period totally different from the original. Bit like the Durrels in that it's not true to the original. Dread to think what the new All Creatures Great and Small will be like!
