Bloody football!

Yes, I know some like it, but looking at the tv schedule for the forthcoming Saturday evening, 7.15 to 9.45 on BBC 1 is given over to it, then 10.35 to 11.50! Give me strength!

I suppose one saving grace is that it's not international games, with people (and I use the term lightly) chanting their support for a non existent country called "Engerland".

Not spoilsports Rufus2. I think most of us are quite happy for others to enjoy it but don’t want it inflicted on us.

Foxyferret Thu 18-Jun-20 14:02:10

I’m glad,I have really missed it and match of the day.

Foxyferret Thu 18-Jun-20 14:05:33

How about a separate channel for soaps and cookery shows that seem to dominate our TV. Not everyone likes those either. (Now hiding behind the sofa)

Rosalyn69 Thu 18-Jun-20 14:08:23

I’d rather watch football than soaps.

Callistemon Thu 18-Jun-20 14:16:15

I'd rather watch nothing than soaps!

Although the new Australian soap The Heights looks more promising. I watched iit because I couldn't be bothered to move after lunchand turn off after the news. Inertia set in.

..... and they've taken Tenable off for bl..dy Royal Ascot without the royals1

Posts on this subject make me glad I am in sole control of my remote control.
When I have visiting family or friend groups (pre lockdown I hasten to add ) I observe who takes charge of the remote and it's inevitably a male visitor. I notice that my grandsons do it too. If they are staying for a while I hide it.

But it signifies the beginning of a return to normality.

Greciangirl Thu 18-Jun-20 15:43:00

You don’t know what you’re missing Phoenix.

Four in a Bed. Afternoons on channel 4 at 5pm.
Priceless.!

AGAA4 Thu 18-Jun-20 15:49:41

Glad the football is back. My 4 grandsons have missed it a lot.

Phloembundle Thu 18-Jun-20 16:00:37

I'm missing Wimbledon this year. Have watched it for 50 or so years. Love rugby, hate football. Thank goodness for Netflix. Brilliant service.

Whingingmom Thu 18-Jun-20 17:18:17

Sorry everyone but I love it!!! Not able to go and watch my team, TV football is a small consolation.

Whingingmom Thu 18-Jun-20 17:19:47

But I can’t stand soaps and the interminable repeats of property programmes!

Kate1949 Thu 18-Jun-20 17:21:50

There are two of us in this house, DH and me. He is not in charge of the remote control.

Barmeyoldbat Thu 18-Jun-20 19:37:52

Yes bloody football and they even gave a talk about it coming back on the Daily Briefing the other day. Hate footie, but love rugby with no divas playing.

Speldnan Thu 18-Jun-20 21:15:04

You get the impression that all anyone really cares about in this country is sport- football in particular! It’s been such a relief without it. Other cultural activities such as music and theatre have been completely sidelined, with no one coming up with ideas for how it can return safely.

Milest0ne Thu 18-Jun-20 21:21:06

I can honestly say I have never watched a football match in my life. I may have to in the future as youngest GS is a good player. I don't think I would have married my H if he was a football fan /player. Why is that "sport" = football in the media? Other sports aren't reported on because , according to a newspaper reporter," It doesn't have a ball."

ALANaV Thu 18-Jun-20 22:46:06

My main fury is we have to PAY the BBC to watch endless sport......if you pay for SKY or other providers, that is a choice ...BBC give no choice ...if you have a tv you have to pay ….I hate sport of any sort ………………...not happy !

justwokeup Fri 19-Jun-20 02:40:36

ALANaV I agree that BBC is such a waste of money, but that's nothing to do with sport! Who would've thought that so many people would find so much to be thankful for in lockdown, even if it's just the lack of sport? wink I'm with BladeAnnie, I was eagerly anticipating the kick off, but could have done without the controversy in the game. But that's football, and that's why it's the most popular, lucrative game in the world and why these very young men, and women, inspire youngsters around the globe. I see so few children outside lately, let's hope different sports coming back will help to dispel the fear and get them outside playing with their friends as soon as possible.

Maggiemaybe Fri 19-Jun-20 08:09:25

What a lot of angst on here! Surely there’s enough on TV to suit everyone? If you have a partner who dictates what you view, that’s a whole different ball game (pun intended).

I wouldn’t even know whether coverage has started yet, even though DH is a huge sports fan and we only have the one television and Freeview. It’s just not switched on for that long, and when it is we’re usually watching something we both like, live or recorded. I watch Corrie or the Sewing Bee, etc, while he does something else, and vice versa when the football’s on. It’s no big deal.

Incidentally, I’m enjoying my one soap much more now that it’s only on for half an hour, three times a week, and I’d be pleased if it stayed like that (fat chance).

Witzend Fri 19-Jun-20 08:16:36

I don’t suppose I’m the only one who’s often been very thankful that my dh has no interest in football!

Rugby is another matter, but he only watches the big games, internationals or World Cup.

Rufus2 Fri 19-Jun-20 13:08:41

most of us are quite happy for others to enjoy it but don’t want it inflicted on us
Ginny That's the problem, you see. confused
How can you expect a chap sit back, relax and enjoy it when he's aware that he's inflicting himself on a non-believer ( "the elephant in the room") scenario so to speak, (metaphorically speaking, of course). It would force me to install a TV in the toilet! grin
Good Health

ginny Fri 19-Jun-20 13:23:29

Ha, as long as it is you that sits on there.

sarahellenwhitney Fri 19-Jun-20 13:36:00

With the variety of channels available on our tv sets I don't give a ++++ how many times football is on. No one forces us to watch.

BelindaB Mon 22-Jun-20 15:25:37

Sod the football - I am absolutely DESPERATE for a game of Rugby!!!!

A real sport with real men and so badly missed for the past few months.
