Weather forecasts

I enjoy keeping up with all the news stories from Britain. Its kind of like guiltily peeking at a road crash. But that's another story. But please! Why weather forecasts every few minutes? Most of us can check the weather details on our phones at any time but every single time I switch on tv theres some jobsworth blethering on about the weather and going on and on for ages, splitting the tiny UK into bite size bits and forecasting every damned raindrop and sunbeam! Who, in heaven's name, needs to be so frequently and needlessly informed when they can get an hour by hour accurate forecast on their phones? And please don't tell me, "old people". IM OLD!!
Here in France, the weather for the entire country (4 times the size of UK) is briefly summarized in 30 seconds, once an hour.
Now, wheres my tin hat?

We are farmers and the weather is of huge importance to us, but the repeats of a weather forecast that are dished out at ever increasing intervals are unnecessary, I agree.
BUT Britain is an island and the weather can differ drastically between small areas, indeed they can have a deluge just over the hill from our house whilst we are basking in the dry. We live in the North and I notice the dramatic difference in climate from the South (where my daughter lives) who's forecasts seem to be correct and factual.
I imagine forecasting the weather for the whole of the British Isles (however tiny it may be) is a complete nightmare. You can't make sweeping statements about the weather here however many satellites you consult - there must be hundreds of mini-climates from valley to valley. I've known my husband in despair over a field of sodden hay whilst his cousin 20 miles away in Yorkshire is gleefully taking beautiful hay into his barn.
The UK is unique. (Snow in the Shetlands, 33 degrees in Hampshire).

I always think that if the wind direction changes by just one inch our weather forecast will be up the shute.

Callistemon Wed 19-Aug-20 10:54:28

I only watch the BBC weather forecast so I can comment on Tomas Schaffenacker's hair

Surely he knows someone with a pair of scissors? grin

Why weather forecasts have been less reliable lately
www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2020/07/200717101026.htm

Though if you want accurate forecasting at a local level, try the WeatherPro app. The premium version costs 75p a month and has an animated radar forecast for rain up to 2 hours ahead, so you can see just when it's going to rain where you are - so I can see today that I'm not going to get my walk until this afternoon...

I read that Tomas Schaffenacker is happy with his new hairstyle and plans to keep it.

I read that Tomas Schaffenacker is happy with his new hairstyle and plans to keep it.

I think all his fans should message him and tell him NO!

Sparklefizz Wed 19-Aug-20 11:20:32

The weather on my phone is never accurate.

Blossoming Wed 19-Aug-20 11:33:49

How tedious for you OP. Have you thought of moving abroad?

phoenix Wed 19-Aug-20 11:43:23

According to the 4 day forecast on the back page of the Telegraph, we don't have any weather at all!

It's in the form of a map with symbols on, and there is never a symbol on Devon and Cornwall confused

pce612 Wed 19-Aug-20 11:52:31

I assume you are watching the morning news programmes?
I haven't noticed lots of forecasts throughout the day; I only have Freeview so can't comment on satellite providers programming.
I live in the north of Scotland, have friends and family in Hampshire and my lovely new man lives in north Wales so I like to see what the regional variatons are and as our weather is so variable, it is good to be able to see when the next shower will hit.
Also, the variations in temperature etc.
Yes, I do use a weather app if I am planning a trip etc.

Erm ... the OP lives in France. Did you read her post or just join the comments?

Tomas's hair - I don't hear the weather when he is on as I am wondering where his hair is going. :-)

crimpedhalo Wed 19-Aug-20 12:18:30

'my dears' ☝️?

Gwenisgreat1 Wed 19-Aug-20 12:27:08

Well, I dare not talk about weather forecasts without input for my DH, who was a professional, so I am passing this over to him!!
There are several commercial companies as well as 'The Met Office' these days producing and selling forecasts so there are bound to be variabilities due to different computer outputs and the interpretation of these, compounded by the usual proximity of the controlling and meandering circumpolar jet stream which we are at the mercy of.

Now you know!!

grandtanteJE65 Wed 19-Aug-20 12:30:27

here in Denmark the local radio stations have a weather forecast at the end of each half-hourly news broadcast.

They are seldom if ever accurate, so I too feel that we could dispense with them.

I discuss the weather every morning with the cat, if he isn't interested in going out, I know to expect rain or high winds.

merlotgran Wed 19-Aug-20 12:35:17

DH rolls his eyes every time I say, 'Oooh look. It's Tomas Schaffenacker. Do you think he has a Cracker Tracker mortgage?'

I do love winding him up. grin

Seefah Wed 19-Aug-20 15:02:06

Thanks ? for the laugh ladies ! I shall now ask the cat for the weather forecast and look online for a photo of Tomas Schaffenacker’s hair ( no TV ). As for the weather well it’s gone bonkers, so much so it’s affected those running the country obviously ?.

specki4eyes Wed 19-Aug-20 15:07:08

Thank you Urmstongran for pointing out Blossoming's lack of attention to detail. Perhaps shes busy watching weather forecasts?gringrin. As the dear, late lamented Sir Terry used to say, "are we living in a parallel universe"confused.
As for the wagging finger at "my dears" ...oh please. Dont take it all so seriously!!

SillyNanny321 Wed 19-Aug-20 15:08:03

Hate BBC with a passion! Have radio on all day & a lot of the evening. So I am sad & boring but probably happier than those obsessing over the latest weather forecast if as they say it is always wrong. Each to their own though ?

I would not like the weather forecasts to cease, yet they are often wrong, but they are part if being British, like tea, pubs, Big Ben etc. I especially like the shipping forecast, of no relevance to me of course, yet I like it, almost like poetry to my ears. If we couldn’t talk bout the weatherWhAt would we put in its place!

MummyJoJo62 Wed 19-Aug-20 15:16:56

I agree and I also get highly irritated when they tell us what the weather was like this time last week/year!! And when they tell us to "take a brolly/cardigan/ sunhat" Like we are imbeciles!

nannypiano Wed 19-Aug-20 15:41:10

I just ask Alexa what the weather us likely to be locally. She's very accurate. Come to think of it I ask her most things I don't know. How sad am I?

Ellianne Wed 19-Aug-20 16:10:52

To be honest, Specki4eyes, French TV Méteo is the only good bit. Most of the programmes in France are British dubbed ones and the adverts are abysmal.
I will say the lady weather presenters are very smartly dressed in France, usually in suits.

Dans quel sens?
