Weather forecasts

I enjoy keeping up with all the news stories from Britain. Its kind of like guiltily peeking at a road crash. But that's another story. But please! Why weather forecasts every few minutes? Most of us can check the weather details on our phones at any time but every single time I switch on tv theres some jobsworth blethering on about the weather and going on and on for ages, splitting the tiny UK into bite size bits and forecasting every damned raindrop and sunbeam! Who, in heaven's name, needs to be so frequently and needlessly informed when they can get an hour by hour accurate forecast on their phones? And please don't tell me, "old people". IM OLD!!
Here in France, the weather for the entire country (4 times the size of UK) is briefly summarized in 30 seconds, once an hour.
Now, wheres my tin hat?

Our local BBC weather reporter stands on the roof of the building in most weathers.
DH thinks he stands there so he can tell us what's arriving in the next half hour or so. That's why the Met Office is in Exeter as the prevailing weather comes from the SW so they can stand outside and watch.

I suppose we in the UK watch with horrified fascination at news from France too.

I hope you have a tv licence, if so, you may comment. If not....

Given the thunder storm last week when my area was forecast to be badly hit, and it was I say localised warnings are essential. My are approx 3 square miles was saturated yet 2 miles away - nothing. Just hope you are never flooded or struck by lightning.

Exactly Callistemon, especially with the worrying announcement in France this afternoon.
"Actuellement, la situation continue de se détériorer avec 3 015 nouvelles contaminations enregistrées au cours des dernières 24 heures."
There's no point living over there and seeing everything through rose coloured spectacles. The car crash is universal.

DH's relatives are there but, like many the UK , they live in a village where there has only been one case a while ago.

I'm wondering which TV stations you are watching to that has so much weather on it! I'm a radio 4 sort and we have it only a couple of times a day. Maybe you'd prefer that?

If the weather reporting is so superior in France, why not (especially as you live there) watch French TV?

Callistemon Wed 19-Aug-20 18:00:56

Perhaps French TV news is even more depressing than British TV news.

Ellianne Wed 19-Aug-20 18:05:25

Very perceptive Paperbackwriter. I know nothing about the OP, but many people retire to rural France and yet continue to watch English TV and meet up with other English speaking people. Unless they have a good command of the language they can't possibly have in depth discussions with the locals about French politics, so most of their of information is from British sources.

I did thanks.
I LOVE the weather forecast.
I love the constant changes & unpredictability of weather.
I live in Cornwall, tbete's a saying here, if you don't like the weather, just wait a couple of hours.

Weather forecasting? Seaweed and crystal ball.

DH makes a point of catching the weather forecast on TV or wireless - but since he broke his hip he never goes out!! I'm the one who's out and about and I can't be bothered with the forecasts, when I've made my mind up to do something I do it regardless of weather, apart from gardening.

But weather is our all important conversation piece. Pass someone in the street "Rain again" or "Will it get out?". What would we do without the weather.

Who said ‘there is no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes’? ?

Tomas Schaffenacker's hair has gone completely mental. Some men whose hair has grown in lockdown (I’ll include DH here) look fine but definitely not Tomas.

Specki4eyes why does it bother you what the weather is in the UK. You obviously don't live there and I don't know where you're seeing so many weather reports. You must be channel switching the whole day. Most of us see possibly the lunchtime weather forecast after the News or in the evening at the end of the news bulletins. I've not seen any programmes interrupted for weather forecasts unless it is some emergency and in Britain we don't get too many tornados. Switch your TV off and enjoy the fresh air. hmm

When you think of the cost of equipment to forcast the weather and the fact that it is seldom right, it does makes you wonder if it was worth the expense. smile

Try this....

Mauriherb Thu 20-Aug-20 11:13:41

Why do they talk about "wall to wall sunshine"? What walls ?
Also why a pollen forecast? I get hayfever and I certainly don't need any forecast to tell me what the pollen is !!

Shropshire weather forecast:

If you can see The Wrekin it's going to rain.
If you can't see The Wrekin, it's raining.

We need all these weather forecasts as Britain does not have a climate, it has ‘weather’?☔️?

What channels are you watching? confused I usually only see a forecast after the 6 or 10 o’clock news, occasionally both if there’s a big news story to follow.

When we lived abroad back in the day the only news from home we ever got was in the international column of the local paper or in an airmail letter, so it was out of date anyway. Looking back I’m glad that I didn’t have the option of watching news (or anything else for that matter) from England. I got to know my new home instead.

I remember when Tomasz was on Would I Lie to You? and claimed that he had never realised that lambs were young sheep as he had always thought that they were different animals. It wasn't until fairly recently that he found out.
It was True!

Oh yes, Callistemon, that was funny!

We're going to get a lot of weather here in the NW in the next couple of days-----gales !
Yet to look out now at the bright blue sky and sun, you'd never guess it. Calm as can be as well. The calm before the storm.
