Does anyone enjoy "celebrity" ; versions of popular shows

For some reason the powers that be seem to think we all want to see celebrity versions of our favourite quiz shows at Christmas - not me. I love quizzes but much prefer them with "ordinary" contestants. The celebrities (many I've never even heard of) all play to the camera, some also show their complete lack of general knowledge with embarrassing answers to simple questions. Even The Sewing Bee, one of my favourite programmes, was ruined by silly contestants. I know it's all supposed to be for charidee but they're all being paid appearance fees. Personally I wish they would just give the fee to charity and stay off the shows. Or am I just a miserable old so and so who doesn't appreciate how lucky I am to have my viewing enriched by these superior beings?

Did anyone spot the dishy explorer Levison Wood on University Challenge last week? I didn’t pick up on who he was till the end of the programme.

BBbevan Tue 29-Dec-20 18:37:16

No as I never know who the ‘celebrities ‘ are. Also the questions are usually so dumbed down as to be laughable.

Paxman explains who the UC teams are in detail. I find it fascinating that it's usually the comedians who have the most general knowledge.

BBevan I am like you, I rarely recognise the so-called celebrity. I assume they do it because they are short of money. I much prefer seeing ordinary folk on and some are really intelligent. Not all, because on The Chase the other day, New York had moved to Spain.

Tonight the contestant did not know that timber was the word the lumberjacks shouted when felling trees.

I'm a serious quizzer- hence my name- and hate, hate, hate 'celebrity' versions of quiz shows. In general, they have zero personality and even less general knowledge and are desperate to hang on to past 'glories' from years ago. It's embarrassing how they behave. If they want to be involved in charities just send them a cheque from their own bank account.

They even ruined Tenable this Christmas. Ann Widdecombe couldn't name 10 Strictly dances, Christopher Biggins thought Romeo and Juliet was a comedy.

I think our Jo Public shows are much better. I’d rather see ‘ordinary’ people on strictly and follow their success’.

I also absolutely hate when comedy series’ go abroad for the Christmas special. I won’t watch.

Depends a great deal on who the celebrities are for me. I don't mind the questions being a bit easier really as the money goes to charity. I think there are too many of the celebrity shows.

MissAdventure Tue 29-Dec-20 21:33:54

No, I turn off immediately if anything is a 'Sleb' special.

Charleygirl5 Tue 29-Dec-20 22:33:57

Some of them. certainly The Chase celebs are shown ad nauseum

honeyrose Tue 29-Dec-20 22:53:03

No - don’t enjoy them as much. Don’t mind Celebrity Mastermind though for some reason. Dislike Celebrity Gogglebox - not nearly as funny as normal Gogglebox.

I never know who the "celebrities" are. They always seem to be such z listers that I don't have a clue what programme they're from or what they're famous for.

Lexisgranny Tue 29-Dec-20 23:13:44

I think that those who book these people define the term “celebrity “ very loosely.

MissAdventure Tue 29-Dec-20 23:19:31

I don't even know what a 'YouTube influencer' is..

WOODMOUSE49 Tue 29-Dec-20 23:43:55

I watch a few. Mainly the version of the 'normal' programme I watch.

I do accept that some of the celebrities will not be recognised by some. After all, we don't watch, listen or read everything out there!

Someone with over 8 million subscribers on YouTube was classed as a celeb: ie Joe Sugg - Internet celebrity. Many Strictly viewers did not have a clue who he was and criticised the choice. He turned out to be a very popular and entertaining contestant.

No, can't bear them.

When I do sometimes catch parts of these programmes, apart from not knowing who any of the 'celebrities' are. It is excruciatingly painful to see interesting and challenging programmes, dumbed down to a level that enables the 'celebrities' to take part.

By chance I caught the about 10 minutes of both Celebrity University Challenge and Mastermind and the questions being asked, were excruciatingly simple and the answer was often indicated in the questions, I soon returned to my decorating.

The 'celebrity' tag applies to anyone these days, it seems. Just an appearance on something as dreadful as Love Island ( I was not a willing watcher) makes someone a celebrity overnight. I don't recognise most of them and those I do seem to pop up on all sorts of these shows, desperate for the cash, I suppose. I give these programmes a wide berth.

Lollin Wed 30-Dec-20 08:49:52

Total turnoff!
Like advertising using " celebs" I only get the cartoon image of ££ for eyes.
I originally assumed they weren't paid for the programmes

Mollygo Wed 30-Dec-20 08:58:21

I like celebrity University Challenge and occasionally I’ve recognised someone if we’ve been watching Celeb Pointless. Last night there were two famous ‘singers’ who performed at the end. Not sure how they were ever famous as singers.
We’ve started watching Richard Osman’s House of Games. That often has people whose names I recognise.

Gingster Wed 30-Dec-20 09:17:01

Celebrity mastermind is the worst. Very embarrassing!

Ailidh Wed 30-Dec-20 09:40:24

Nope. I turned off Sewing Bee after ten minutes. I love the proper programme, can't abide celebrities just R-sing around. Same with Bake Off and Masterchef.
