The Terror

I’m also enjoying the series but have to agree about the poor sound and diction.
The usual problem is background music but that’s not the case with this programme.

I do wish they had just stuck to the story which is interesting enough without the daft addition of the fictitious monster.
I almost gave up watching when that appeared but we decided to stick with it.

It appears that what we saw last night was the final episode so we watched 6/7 tonight. I’m not much clearer than I was with watching episode 10 last night! I get confused between which is which of the men.

It’s been good viewing, though. It makes you wonder how you’d react in such circumstances.

The excellent actor who played the second captain was Richard Harris’s son I can see the resemblance now and the similar accent.

I’ve actually watched pretty much every interview he’s ever done including going back to Mad Men (which I’ve never seen) and Chernobyl. Strangely enough Cieran Hinds has an Irish accent but doesn’t have it in the series and Jared doesn’t have an Irish accent. It always fascinates me how actors do accents but interview with their proper accent, especially when they’re Australian but tend to act with English accents eg Nicole Kidder. In Chernobyl the actors were told to just speak with their normal accent so they could concentrate on the role itself. There’s a film that Jared has made that I want to see, too but I need to google the name as I’ve forgotten it. I love finding a ‘new’ actor or director and exploring their back catalogue.

Yes Jared Harris is a brilliant actor, he was wonderful in Chernobyl.

I once had the opportunity to watch a TV advert being filmed. I was amazed how the actor could deliver a 30 second speech exactly the same way, over and over. Then the director asked him to do it again but emphasise this word over that word and he did it perfectly. But everything else was the same.

I'm rambling now but just filling time until we can talk about the ending!

Jared Harris was superb in Chernobyl. My favourite scene was when the coal miner’s no-nonsense union rep went into the portacabin on site to discuss the planned strategy with the scientists which would involve the technical know how of his fellow miners. Brilliant! Actually I could watch that series again it was so good.

I was so pleased when Jared Harris won a BAFTA for his role in Chernobyl and he received numerous other nominations but I always feel a BAFTA is something special. I also thought Stellan Skarsgard was very good, he is another one of my favourite actors. I will definitely watch Chernobyl again, DH and I have very different tastes in what we like to watch byt we watched Chernobyl together and after every episode we would say how good it was.

I’d never heard of Jared Harris before The Terror (haven’t seen any of the other programmes mentioned here). When I looked him up and saw that he was one of Richard Harris’s sons I went ‘Of course!’. Next thought was that he couldn’t be, because he would be too old to be his son. I then saw that RH would be 91yo now, had he lived, so that was a shocker!

I fell down a Franklin Expedition rabbit hole last night. There’s some fascinating stuff out there, including films of the ships when they were found in 2014/16. Lots of theories about what happened to the men - there’s a full crew list on Wiki. Also anecdotal evidence from Inuit people that some men survived for some years after they abandoned ship.

I went to sleep thinking of The Terror and when I woke this morning, it was the first thing I thought about. I think I’ll be haunted for a while yet.

I always judged a film I’d seen at the cinema by whether or not I was still thinking about it the next day. The Terror seems to be on my mind permanently. I’m tempted to get the book but, being me I won’t read it. I don’t seem to read books these days. From what I’ve read thus far Franklin was a very popular captain and a very decent man albeit prone to making disastrous mistakes. I spent the whole of Chernobyl trying to figure out why Stellan Skarsgard seemed so familiar. I was disappointed that the dvd of Chernobyl didn’t have a ‘making of’ section or a directors/actors commentary as I always used to watch those after each series of Game of Thrones.

It always amazes me also to find that quite often when an actor is so perfect in a part they weren’t actually the first choice for it. I can’t find the film that was mentioned in the interview I saw. No mention of it on Wikipedia or anywhere. Jared said it was a film directed by his brother. Maybe I imagined it....

MayBee70 Stellan Skarsgard has been in a huge number of films and tv series, you can see them all on Wikipedia. He was one of the three possible fathers in Mamma Mia and its sequel. He was also in The Railway Man with Colin Firth and there was a tv series ‘River’ in which he played a detective named River who worked with a colleague played by Nicola Walker. I loved it and was hoping they would make a second series but nothing came of it. He has eight children, one is Alexander Skarsgard who is also an actor and has been in a lot of things including Big Little Lies in which he played the abusive husband of the character played by Nicole Kidman.

I wasn’t aware of this so thank you, I’ll have a look in iPlayer. I’ve finally got round to reading Endurance, a book written about Earnest Shackleton’s ill fated polar voyage. The men were incredible, so stoic and resilient. I’ve not read much yet and I know circumstances get much worse.

MayBee70 The film Jared was talking about may have been The Rachel Papers by Martin Amis; it was directed by Jared’s brother.

Thanks. I’ll check that out. He said it was about a teacher who taught someone who could have easily gone off the rails but their relationship turned him around. It sounded like the sort of film that I’d like.

I loved River. It’s the only thing I’ve seen that Nicola Walker is in although everyone raves about her. I’d’ve liked another series, too.

Stellan Skarsgard also has a son called Gustaf who played Floki in Vikings. Anyone seen that? It's spectacularly good. Bit gory though!

I lost interest in Vikings after Ragnar departed. What did fascinate me about the series though was that I’d often see something totally implausible in it only to find it was actually based on fact. eg blood eagle and what happened in Paris. Again something that also happened with The Terror.
