Did anyone watch this tonight? I thought it was very well done - good acting, convincing scenery and very gripping (though rather gory).

And here’s the lyrics so you can sing along - it mentions the cairn but contains no spoilers?

Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
Westward from the Davis Strait 'tis there 'twas said to lie
The sea route to the Orient for which so many died
Seeking gold and glory, leaving weathered, broken bones
And a long-forgotten lonely cairn of stones
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
Three centuries thereafter, I take passage overland
In the footsteps of brave Kelsey, where his Sea of Flowers began
Watching cities rise before me, then behind me sink again
This tardiest explorer, driving hard across the plain
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
And through the night, behind the wheel, the mileage clicking west
I think upon Mackenzie, David Thompson and the rest
Who cracked the mountain ramparts and did show a path for me
To race the roaring Fraser to the sea
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea
How then am I so different from the first men through this way?
Like them, I left a settled life, I threw it all away
To seek a Northwest Passage at the call of many men
To find there but the road back home again
Ah, for just one time I would take the Northwest Passage
To find the hand of Franklin reaching for the Beaufort Sea
Tracing one warm line through a land so wild and savage
And make a Northwest Passage to the sea

Ah, that was wonderful suzie thank you. Love Judy Collins.

Ready to discuss when everyone's caught up!

suziewoozie Thu 25-Mar-21 10:57:38

I actually went to her concert in Guildford in January last year - it was wonderful and seems particularly poignant now.

Alegrias1 Thu 25-Mar-21 11:50:41

Last concert I went to was June Tabor and the Oyster Band in Newcastle in November 2019. Fabulous.

Anyway, sorry, don't want to divert the Terror thread!

Not diverting - drums fingers- passing time. Come on folks - who hasn’t finished watching yet?
Meanwhile, last concert I went to was February last year- Transatlantic sessions at Royal Festival Hall. I have however attended all the online concerts over the last year performed by the lovely folk duo Ninebarrow who incidentally are on Countryfile on Sunday. <Drums fingers and wanders off>

Well, I’ve, as usual, binge watched it. Mainly because, as usual, I hadn’t got a clue what was going on half the time and also got everyone mixed up apart from the captain, the doctor and the girl. I’ve now spent the last few hours watching History Buffs on utube which then led onto an interview with Michael Palin about his book about The Erebus, then a lecture about the expedition and I’ve got two more to watch.

MayBee70 Thu 25-Mar-21 20:49:48

suzie: : your theory might be included in the history buffs blog....isn’t it fascinating! It takes me back to a Rik Burns documentary about the Donner Party that I saw many years ago...the first of many amazing Burns brothers documentaries that I’ve watched over the years.

MayBee70 Thu 25-Mar-21 20:51:14

I’d forgotten about The Oysterband: I must do dig out my cd’s....

Urmstongran Thu 25-Mar-21 21:19:51

sw I think on BBC2 it will be another couple of weeks to go? There are 10 episodes in total (I think) and last night was number 6 so if we get double episodes that 7&8 next Tuesday and 9&10 the Tuesday after.

You’ll have to sit patiently eating your Easter eggs ? whilst waiting for us lot to catch up!

Atqui Thu 25-Mar-21 21:24:06

I thought last night ( Weds):was a double - 6 and 7.

Atqui Thu 25-Mar-21 21:29:18

I know I’ve said this before on another thread, but isn’t it reasonable to discuss the episode that’s just been on the scheduled BBC2 TV. Surely spoilers need only be considered if someone has binge watched and is ahead of the live schedule?Perhaps we should have a separate thread for the current episode.

Urmstongran Thu 25-Mar-21 21:40:35

It was Atqui.
What did you think of it? The end of the second episode horrified me. Is Cornelius bad or mad?

The actor plays a good part with his weasel face and wispy beard!

Atqui Thu 25-Mar-21 21:59:32

I have trouble keeping up with the characters , but I am getting there! I think Hicky ( Cornelius?) is a bit of both. He’s certainly manipulative, Difficult to know if the lead poisoning is affecting people’s brains , or the situation they are in, which is enough to unbalance anyone.
I didn’t realise that the Inuit woman had cut her tongue out- thought she’d had a brush with the bear. The lighting makes it difficult to see what’s going on sometimes.

Urmstongran Thu 25-Mar-21 22:04:19

I too thought the bear had got her! It was sweet when she lay down next to Goodsir and soothed him. Poor man he’s carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders regarding lead poisoning and how to feed all those men.

Urmstongran Thu 25-Mar-21 22:11:20

Part of the tragedy of “The Terror” is the slow realization that the men are caught in an impossible situation of deadly forces. If the freezing temperatures don’t get them, there’s poison in the very food they eat. If they manage to escape the timeless creature off in the distance, the machinations of their shipmates might be an even greater concern. This is going to turn very nasty when the food runs out. I’m on edge watching it unfold.

Floriel Thu 25-Mar-21 22:12:41

Did anyone else find the sound and diction very poor? It’s almost as though the director asked everyone to mutter and swallow their lines. We had to turn on the subtitles.

Urmstongran Thu 25-Mar-21 22:12:56

The caulker’s mate to hate! He’s devious, clever and looks out for his own skin. You wouldn’t trust him to take you with him though ...

Urmstongran Thu 25-Mar-21 22:13:34

I had the subtitles on too Florien.

Urmstongran Thu 25-Mar-21 22:27:43

For me, the the recurring question on The Terror becomes an interesting one: What do men do when they know they’re going to die? 129 men in Artic conditions, little food and no one knows where they are. The stuff of panic attacks.

MayBee70 Sun 28-Mar-21 19:05:00

I’ve now spent two days watching every documentary etc about the series and the background to it. So if anyone wants to chat about it please pm me to avoid spoilers. My daughter is starting on it tonight so I’ll be able to discuss it with her. I’m absolutely fascinated by it. Also a bit in love with Jared Harris who is so lovely in the interviews I’ve watched. As with Game of Thrones many of the actors were classically trained and it shows. And the attention to detail is astounding also.

Wedi Mon 29-Mar-21 12:10:07

Finished The Terror last night by watching 4 episodes .

I thought it excellent and because no one survived to tell the tale , artistic licence is allowable , I think .

I watched it mainly because my children ( all in their 50s ) were watching it and discussing it together on WHATSAPP . Also I like Ciaran Hinds but now I’m a little in love with Jared Harris .

I think the cannibalism is probably true - very difficult to imagine how one would behave in those circumstances.

I’m now going to watch/read anything I can find about it . I had never heard about this actual expedition , made more fascinating by fairly recent discoveries .

SueDonim Mon 29-Mar-21 13:42:23

I watched episodes five & six last night. I am completely baffled as to what’s going on in episode six! grin

MayBee70 Mon 29-Mar-21 13:58:33

That’s why I rewatched it all. I’ve been watching the History Buffs utube blogs and the lectures on the search for the ships. My daughter has just binge watched several episodes. I think I understand it all now but I am going to rewatch it because there are so many details I’ve missed. I keep finding other utube blogs as well.

SueDonim Mon 29-Mar-21 20:39:51

Well, my daughter just started a discussion with me about episode six. It’s very clear that we’ve seen two different programmes! Hers led straight on from #5 while ours was utterly baffling. I think there’s been some sort of gremlin in our tv recording that’s mixed up some episodes. I’m quite glad I’m not going barmy after all! grin

MayBee70 Mon 29-Mar-21 21:22:02

The That shelf blog does a very good synopsis of each episode.
