Eurovision Song Contest....time to leave?

Why is it we can never produce an exciting song or artist even though we have the given the world the very best of popular music over the last 60 years? I imagine we are getting null points because the song is rubbish, not because they don't like us.
Should we leave Eurovision altogether? We are contributing a fair bit towards it, which seems like a waste of money if we can't make more effort with our entries.

Fine by me, ahaha.

Alegrias1 Tue 25-May-21 13:58:55

World Cup, obviously. grin

Anybody remember the first year it began when Pearl Carr and Teddy Johnson represented the UK. I was really sad when we didn't win (aged 7)!

TanaMa Tue 25-May-21 14:23:51

If I remember correctly, we didn't do much better when Andrew Lloyd Webber composed the music!

railman. Marcus Rashford, to me, is a beacon of hope. What an amazing young man he is. We were talking about him whilst walking the dog yesterday and both of us actually welled up and had to stop talking. I didn’t know about Mary Beard. I’m very disappointed that BBC 4 aren’t planning to make any new programmes as the ones made by Mary Beard and her fellow academics are my staple tv viewing. The only good thing being that I can watch them over and over again as there’s so much to take in.

Perhaps they don't plan to make such programmes because the govt tell us that everybody watches Netflix or other streaming programmes.

I agree with you about the programmes made by Mary Berry and her ilk because I usually learn something I didn't already know.

They don’t want people to be educated. imo

We should leave them to it, it's not a song contest, it's all about visual effects. I watched it for the first time in years, as a friend texted us and we had a good laugh. That's all it is, a farce. Graham Norton is great. I actually liked our song, worth more than 'nil points' surely but we'll never get anywhere so what's the point?

Ever since the UK decided to leave Europe, we've been getting next to no points. James Newton's was not rubbish as someone on here has stated; he wrote it himself so he is a talented person. It had the main verses and then the chorus - which seems to be the criteria for most, if not all, Eurovision songs. I thought there were far worse songs than the UK's. It's a political thing now. All the Eastern block countries vote for each other; the Scandinavian countries vote for each other. There was a time when we could guarantee 12 points from Ireland and Spain - but it's been many years since either of them have deigned to donate us a point or two. I think the UK should pull out of Eurovision and host its own UK song contest - for just the four countries of the UK. Someone with some clout, like Ed Sheeran, could host/present it. We'd have no stupid costumes and there would be a dress sense. Some of the singers, like the Russian one, wore dungarees or boiler suits to show that whilst they were women, they were not sex objects, while others gyrated in skimpy costumes designed to exactly show that they ARE sex objects. The song that won was awful and I can't believe that heavy metal is a genre of music that everyone in Europe feels is representative of the general preferred choice of music. There is talk of getting Bill Bailey to represent us next time, but I doubt it would work. We've had top stars in recent years - Engelbert Humpledink and Bonnie Tyler -both thought they were the bees' knees but both songs were forgettable. Until the political side of the content is ironed out (which I doubt will ever happen), the UK will always be Billy No Mates and will always be derided - however good or mediocre our songs might be.

Time to leave. Its a travesty of a contest. Our song was not the worse even Germany with their playschool song scored more points. Its obvious they dislike our anti Europe stance, defo time to go.

Lupin Tue 25-May-21 15:08:44

For the first time in years I didn't watch. Given the voting pattern in previous years I just felt we would not gain many
votes however good our song. The voting is a farce.
I wonder what would happen if those voting had no idea which country had entered which song. There could be a voting panel with reps from each country taking part. Each song would premiere on the night of competition and if any leaked beforehand then they would be disqualified. Even better if it was on the radio! Just dreaming, I know.

Definitely time to call it a day. I haven’t watched in years as it’s a total ‘cringe-fest’. The inane condescending chatter from the hosts makes me want to ? Best thing about it is Graham Norton and I think (salary aside) even he would want it gone. It wouldn’t matter how good or bad our song was they’re all a cliquey lot and the U.K. has always been excluded from that party whether pre or post Brexit!

icanhandthemback Tue 25-May-21 16:08:30

Nooo, you can't get rid of the Eurovision Song Contest. It is a bit of frivolous fun and not something we should take too seriously. I love it. It's like an animated version of the terrible souvenirs you see when you go on holiday which you giggle and cringe at in equal measure.

Ohmother Tue 25-May-21 16:15:38

We DON’T quit!!!!! We’re UKrs!!!! Keep going and believe in ourselves!!!! That attitude didn’t win us the war!!!! ???

homefarm Tue 25-May-21 18:48:01

It's utter rubbish. LEAVE.

AnnieB4 Tue 25-May-21 18:57:31

Initially I thought we should pull out in protest but then got my sense of humour back ! Never say die ...think we need to tune in more to the essence of Eurovision..our song wasn't that bad but maybe wrong choice of singer & definitely need more imagination overall in terms of presentation... don't know why I like Eurovision but I do...it's bit bonkers, old fashioned in one sense but futuristic in another! Love the whole theatricals, the unexpectedness, the enthusiasm of the audience & of course Graham Norton! So let's not be deflated...let's go more bonkers! And just have a bit of fun!

Snowbell Tue 25-May-21 18:58:33

Agree the song was rubbish and, as for presentation, whatever was he wearing!! The first time I heard the song months ago I thought "well that doesn't stand a chance!" Who decides which songs get onto the short list? That's where we need to go back to. I didn't like the winning song either but there were some good ones, eg Iceland, Belgium, Israel

The BBC, fearful of the astronomic cost of staging the contest if we won, gave James Newman a very clear brief: “Lose any way you can.”
?

So James did a thorough job. He composed a woeful song, devoid of any hooks or riffs that might attract a listener. He sang it badly, not hitting a single note from beginning to end. And finally, he wore a body bag, inviting the international judges and audiences to kill him stone dead.

And so it came to pass. Null points.

A brief fulfilled.

You’ve got it ??? it’s just fun. That’s what our Eurovision parties are about. European bunting, foods from all over Europe, dancing ?

We were on a campsite in Spain one year when the contest was on. We knew how seriously they took it but this was the first time we were with other countries taking part. They couldn’t understand our irreverence to it.
They just didn’t get the ‘fun’ thing ?

jerseygirl Tue 25-May-21 19:21:32

It could be the best song ever written, we still wouldn't win because no one likes us. They like us even less since we left the EU. Its about time we left. How much humiliation are we prepared to take.

rubysong Tue 25-May-21 20:08:48

We must continue entering but accept that we will always be last. We should send them a really long boring song with no staging whatever. Then whoever the singer is should get a medal for being the sacrificial lamb. I did enjoy it on Saturday and thought James' reaction was great. However the European Swimming Championships were a different matter. Italy won that as well but we were a very close second.

olliebeak Tue 25-May-21 20:20:18

We could have something well-written by the best songwriters that this country could possibly muster - perhaps Andrew Lloyd-Webber / Elton John / Ed Sheeran / Thom Yorke etc.
Sung by one of our very best singers - perhaps Michael Ball / Elton John / Ed Sheeran / Rebecca Ferguson / Alexandra Burke / Leona Lewis .......................... and we'd STILL get nowhere!

Naninka Wed 26-May-21 06:47:50

We love it! Always have a Eurovision party here; always fly the flag! Loved the nerdy Icelandic entry... lol.
Amanda Holden looked like a drag queen and spouted rubbish - she's me, me, me!
The UK song was dire and the chap singing it looked like a grinning drug dealer!
Still love it... love Graham Norton; he had big boots to fill too!

Shropshirelass Wed 26-May-21 08:39:30

It is excruciatingly painful to watch and I think a waste of time, it is political voting at it’s clearest. But if people want to watch it then fine, the TV has an off switch.
