Ok, am I the only one who hates tennis?

Wimbledon bores me rigid. The gasping and grunting with every shot really grinds my gears. I have never really been into spectator sports but sitting there for hours at Wimbledon watching a ball go back and forth, back and forth, and then if it rains there is a risk that Cliff Richard will get to his feet and sing shock No thanks. It is the sheer tedium of it

It’s awful. Tedious and populated by some utter snobs. All that “come on Tim” stuff in cut glass accents. Bleugh.
As for Murray…. Off button used a lot at this time of year ….

Why bother with the ‘On’ button at all?

Does anybody remember a Children’s TV programme over 30 years ago called “ Why Don't You? or Why Don't You Just Switch Off Your Television Set and Go and Do Something Less Boring Instead?
A BBC children's television series broadcast in 42 series between 20 August 1973 and 21 April 1995.
Still good advice.

It seems to be all sport on TV at the mo, what with Euro footbal, Wimbledon, and cricket. I feel so good deciding not to watch TV and go outside for a walk instead.

Oh sorry Lucca I'm sure I turned over and it was on both!!

The only advantage to actually being at Wimbledon is the exercise it gives your neck. Watching it on TV doesn’t even do that.

What annoys me greatly is that I am NOT a sports fan of any kind ....can we get a refund of the exorbitant TV licence for having nothing else decent to watch (and I don't count endless repeats of Mamma Mia (1 and 2), and all the other films ..having to watch Downton Abbey AGAIN on Channel 10 ......I have some good books to catch up on so all is not lost ......

I have no interest in sport at all, would rather read a good book. Where we used to live e had a tennis club at the end of the garden. always getting balls in our garden, the players never thought to ask if they could collect them, just walked all over the garden. Our neighbour used to collect them up and then throw them over the fence when they had a tournament, apart from that what went on the clubhouse definitely was not tennis!!

It annoys me that both BBC 1 and 2 are devoted to tennis. I miss my afternoon dose of Escape to the country. 3pm is my cut of point during the day for tea and biscuits and a rest so i can carry on with my day. No wonder the weather always seems to turn Wimbledon Week

Coggers94 Thu 01-Jul-21 11:41:04

I actually live near the grounds. Normally I try to go away for the second week but as we are not allowed to travel I'm stuck with it. Roll on next weekend when all is done for another year. Tennis bores me to tears.

Tennis fans are much better behaved than football fans (all right, I know it’s only a minority of football fans). I’ve never heard of tennis hooligans.

You rarely hear of football hooligans nowadays! The rugby crowds weren’t exactly social distancing but didn’t come in for the same contempt and disdain.

Can’t understand why people are so snidey about a game that gives working class lads the chance to shine.

I agree Kamiso. There is many a potential troublemaker saved by grassroots football. It doesn’t seem to encourage the same drinking culture as rugby either.

Are you sure about that?

Ok Blossoming thanks, I am aware of the off button, was just making conversation. Bloody hell.

Just what I was thinking. Some people.

MacTavish1 Thu 01-Jul-21 11:51:01

I'm not in the least bit interested in Wimbledon or any other Tennis competition. My favourite sports are Athletics and Snooker and if the Olympics does go ahead I'll be glued. I've also been watching quite a lot of the Euros with my OH and saw England win. Hope they can keep going.

Aepgirl Thu 01-Jul-21 11:55:17

I used to love watching the tennis at Wimbledon but all the enjoyment has now gone. Very few rallies just power shots that might satisfy the players but not the spectators. I also detest the grunting and screeching on court.

While there’s so much money involved it will always produce primadonnas.

Nightsky2 Thu 01-Jul-21 12:00:46

I like some tennis, depends who’s playing. Watching Andy Murray last night was very frustrating but what a fighter he is.

Sarnia Thu 01-Jul-21 12:06:51

I don't enjoy watching tennis but accept that many do and they enjoy the TV coverage when the big tournaments are on. I have footy at the moment, so that's fine for me. Each to their own.

Daisend1 Thu 01-Jul-21 12:07:45

I have no interest in any kind of sport so don't watch it on tv.
It has to be my age ? although remember, as if it were yesterday ,cheering England on in sixty six to win the world cup.Lets hope for a repeat performance.

Tempest Thu 01-Jul-21 12:09:14

Hate is a very strong word. What is there to hate, beautiful healthy bodies overcoming all sorts of set backs playing an elegant masterful game. All sport has an art and skill to be able to play at competitive level. I am not a sports fanatic but admire anyone who can devote such determination to something they love. Whether it's dressmaking, baking, playing a board game or a physical sports game. No I cannot hate their accomplishments and I LOVE to watch people strive for their dreams.

jenpax Thu 01-Jul-21 12:10:18

My late mother had played tennis on the Junior circuit in her young days and was obsessive? I associate Wimbledon fortnight with sitting in a room with the curtains drawn in absolute silence save for the thud of a ball on grass and my mothers critique of the players performances. I loath watching it as a result!

Hazeld Thu 01-Jul-21 12:22:46

Can't stand tennis. What's the point of it? Watching a ball going backwards and forwards, how boring, just like football and cricket. I'd rather watch paint dry as they say.

mrsgreenfingers56 Thu 01-Jul-21 12:24:31

Well glad it isn't only me then! All the grunting and groaning really gets on my nerves. But it is better than football!

Alioop Thu 01-Jul-21 12:24:51

I groan when I hear Wimbledon is on. Not a fan at all, rather watch a fly crawling up a wall.

Growing0ldDisgracefully Thu 01-Jul-21 12:25:44

I'm with many on here - sport, any sport = boring. Yawn.

Ellie Anne Thu 01-Jul-21 12:30:59

Calendar girl I’m with you though I find it difficult to watch Andy Murray. I get so nervous for him. My oh was complaining about tennis being on 2 channels. I was very restrained. Didn’t mention football!

Growing0ldDisgracefully Thu 01-Jul-21 12:31:38

I possibly have a dislike of tennis, as our garden, when I was growing up, backed onto a tennis club premises and every weekend and fine Sumner evening for months, was intruded on by the noise of tennis balls thudding forward and back, the shrieks of the players, and the pain-in-the-bums who were constantly asking us to find the balls they'd lost over the fence and bring them back. So those who only have to suffer the couple of weeks of Wimbledon on TV, have much less to endure than we did for literally months on end, with unfortunately no off button....

Lucca Thu 01-Jul-21 12:35:16

Sarina and Tempest. Nice posts !

All those who would rather stick pins in their eyes, watch paint dry etc…that’s how I feel about Bargain Hunt, Jayne Macdonald etc, but hey aren’t we lucky that we are all different !
