Early days but not too sure about this new programme. What do others think? Bradley Walsh sounds the same in every programme he is in. Is he acting or being himself? Still, it’s early days.

I loved it.

Hated it, just as I did the original! Bradley Walsh seems to be getting rather a lot of screen time recently.

Loved the original. Not sure about this one.

I can't bear to watch the new version. I loved the old one so much and think it was very special and a perfect moment in time. I don't want to burst my little Larkin bubble.

I didn’t see the original and haven’t made up my mind yet. I could watch the original on BritBox for comparison.

Easy Sunday evening frippery.

I also loved the original and am a little worried that this one is trying too hard! I’ll give it another chance next week.

Not very keen, it seemed to jump from one scene to another. Nice scenery though.

Their house looked nice.

Never really cared for David Jason in the original.

I didn’t see the original and was looking forward to having this for my Sunday evening viewing after Strictly. Not really sure what I was expecting but I feel a little disappointed. I’ll watch again next week in the hope it grows on me.

LadyGracie Sun 10-Oct-21 21:44:59

A bit tame I thought, but I do like Bradley Walsh so I’ll watch again and give it a chance.
Mariette looked a bit old.

BigBertha1 Sun 10-Oct-21 21:48:28

I'm not keen on this new version. I loved the books and the original series. Always wanted to be part of a family like this.

gulligranny Sun 10-Oct-21 22:09:22

Loved the books, thought the original series was "perfick".
Didn't like this at all - no charm, no real warmth and very strange casting; Bradley Walsh is not convincing at all and who on earth thought it was a good idea to cast Amelia Bullmore (fine actress though she is) as dear, daffy Edith Pilchester? Where has the horrible vicar sprung from?

Modern day expressions used where they would never have been - Ma saying "Just asking" in the shop .... No!

Tok Stephen's brief introduction as Mr. Charlton seemed to be playing it absolutely right, though, so might give it another try next week.

A bit tame I thought, but I do like Bradley Walsh so I’ll watch again and give it a chance.
Mariette looked a bit old.

The actress playing Mariette is lovely but she is 30 - much too old to play an 18 year old!
The actress playing 16 year old Primrose is 19 but looks much younger.

I was rather disappointed. Marietta looks too old. The biggest disappointment was Bradley Walsh. Pa Larkin is an ebullient well rounded person who comes from Kent, not the East end of London. It has none of the ambience of the time which the previous series captured.

Grandma70s Sun 10-Oct-21 22:33:22

I agree about the strange casting, Mariette especially.
Also agree about the lack of real warmth. There are some very odd-looking people in it! I shall keep watching, though, because at least it’s cheerful.

tanith Sun 10-Oct-21 22:39:01

Did anyone else spot Bradley’s son Barney as the policeman? I’m not sure about it either Primrose looked far too old but I’ll give it another go I think.

Grandma2213 Sun 10-Oct-21 23:03:58

Never liked the original and this one even less - a bit too sickly for me. Bradley Walsh seems to be everywhere these days. Maybe he needs to build up his pension fund. I might watch another one just to be fair but I did find it tedious.

JenniferEccles Sun 10-Oct-21 23:04:21

I think the trouble is the original was such a hard act to follow, but we’re only on episode one so let’s see how it develops.

I would have rather have seen someone other than Bradley Walsh as Pa. I don’t think he’s a good actor at all because as others have said, he always sounds exactly the same whatever he’s in. I would have preferred to have seen an unknown actor given a chance.

The actress playing Mariette is ok I guess but she doesn’t have the same allure as the young Catherine Zeta Jones did.

Despite having said all that I’m sure I will stick with it. Undemanding Sunday night viewing, followed by something quite different in Angela Black.

DillytheGardener Sun 10-Oct-21 23:15:02

Hated it. I loved both the books and the original series but can’t stand this remake.
The original’s script was very faithful to the book’s text and dialogue, I’d read the books before I watched the original series, and everything was absolutely perfick!
The new Mariette is so harsh and rough, compared to the cat like and memorising Mariette of both the books and the original series. The new pop has none of Jason’s charisma, all of them feel like they are acting on some ghastly hallmark/east Enders mashup nightmare. Rant over. The whole thing made me cross.

Ladyleftfieldlover Sun 10-Oct-21 23:17:34

What’s with all the remakes? Surely there are plenty of new books etc, to be serialised. I’m not sure I can watch any more All Creatures, although OH loves it. Can anyone name a remake which was better than the original?

merlotgran Sun 10-Oct-21 23:32:18

It was OK I suppose. Not a patch on the original series but It'll do for a bit of Sunday night feel-good.

Eloethan Sun 10-Oct-21 23:42:40

I watched about 10 minutes and didn't enjoy it. I think the family is supposed to be quirky and funny but I didn't warm to Bradley Walsh's character, or indeed any of the characters, and the introduction of the hunt and hunting dogs into the storyline put me off.

I didn't watch the previous series so can't compare the two.

Calendargirl Mon 11-Oct-21 06:57:08

Can anyone name a remake that was better than the original?

Probably not, because if the original was good, those characters and scenes are embedded in our minds, and anything or anyone else is a no go.

I liked it! Very amusing gentle viewing for a Sunday night. Thought Bradley Walsh did well, and I liked Mariette and Ma too. Yes I do remember the first series! Liked that too.
