The Long Call and Shetland.

Haven’t seen any posts about either of these since they aired.

Gave up on TLC after two episodes, have read the book but found it rather dreary, couldn’t remember the outcome and didn’t really care. Matthew Venn is no Jimmy Perez, but Jimmy looks a bit jowly and could do with a shave. I know he has a lot on his plate though, with murders, bereavement and a dad with dementia.

I thought my age had caught up with my brain because I also could not work out who half the characters were in Shetland.

I also watched Dalgliesh and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I am looking forward to next week's two episodes. I can cope when the episodes are back to back. There are 6 in total. I have read all of the books and loved them.

Glad to hear this Charleygirl I've got two episodes recorded for this afternoon's binge session!

Calendargirl Sat 06-Nov-21 07:13:35

I watched Dalgliesh also, but kept nodding off!

I have read the books, but to me, Adam Dalgliesh will always be Roy Marsden. Nothing wrong with Bertie Carvel, but old memories die hard.

I’m so glad to read that, Charleygirl as I thought I’d lost my marbles! There’s just too many characters and names and I’m totally confused until I see the person. I don’t usually have any problem but I’m sure there are more people in this Shetland series than normal!

I enjoyed Dalgleish. The first murder scene was the most shocking I've seen on TV.
I quite liked Roy Marsden as Dalgleish but used to be distracted by his ears! I'm very shallow. The new Dalgleish seemed fine to me. Very buttoned up.

Yes, he is excellent imo.

He will put that sergeant in his place quietly but firmly!

I am befuddled by this series of Shetland. Is it just me? It doesn't seem nearly as good as previous series.

I kept saying - who's she? Who are they?
Where do they fit in?

Too many characters now, rather like The Long Call.

Yes.
Who is Sandy?

Calendargirl Thu 11-Nov-21 16:22:47

Sandy is Jimmy’s sidekick.

(Isn’t he?)

confused

Thank goodness thought it was just me. No idea who's who!

I know I dozed off last night but I have literally lost the plot. I thought the previous series were better and easier to follow for the (dim) me!

Sparklefizz Fri 12-Nov-21 11:31:20

Glad I'm not on my own with being discombobulated by Shetland. smile

I’m sure I read somewhere that Shetland is no longer based on any of AC’s actual books but just the characters. Maybe that explains it not being as good as it was? I know she’s not writing any more books in the Shetland series, The Long Call is her latest series. She says she’s happy to continue writing the Vera books.

Yes I think all her books have been finished, and this story (and possibly the previous) are not hers.

We too are rather confused by the story, and it seems to include a back story that we either don't know or have forgotten.

Yes.
Who is Sandy?

Sandy is the Detective Constable, the one who got injured and ended up in hospital.
I'm getting rather annoyed because the script is making him out to be rather less than competent whereas Tosh, now Detective Sergeant, is very much the favoured detective.

Interestingly, I think that Steven Robertson who plays Sandy, was born and brought up in the Shetland Isles.

From memory, I think the AC books make Sandy out to be a bit lazy and less than competent. Tosh is great isn't she.

Calendargirl Fri 12-Nov-21 21:19:53

Don’t think Tosh was in the books was she?

I think this series is not very interesting because poor Jimmy has no love interest, apart from the ‘nun’ character.

I have some books downloaded on my Kindle but haven't read them yet.

Oh dear, I like Sandy!

Tosh's boyfriend could be the leak, though, or have I missed something?
?

Yes, I wondered that. I can't believe it's Sandy.

I usually enjoy Shetland and, of course, the scenery is beautiful. But I have found the latest series slightly dull and rather confusing (but then I find quite a few TV plots confusing these days!).

Charleygirl5 Sun 14-Nov-21 14:54:49

Eloethan join the club but please remember how brains are as sharp as knives-it is the writers who let us down.

BlueBelle Sun 14-Nov-21 15:04:21

Eloethan you’re not alone I asked my daughter very sharp minded how she was enjoying it and she said it’s quite muddling too many characters
eazybee I had to check out who Sandy was too ?

Calistemon Sun 14-Nov-21 17:17:40

eazybee I had to check out who Sandy was too ?

I am truly shocked at you both!

Truly!!! ?

Having just read Raven Black, first of Shetland series, I tried to get the original tv series on catch up and other streaming services but couldn't. So, bit the bullet and bought first 5 series on Amazon. Looking forward now to a binge fest. The info on the dvds says that only the first 4 stories are based on the books. After that each series of 6 episodes is just based on the characters.
Read The Long Call, a bit disappointed with the tv version. Found the way Matthew Venn was played was a bit wooden. Seemed to lack any personality, but to be honest he didn't have much in the book either.
