The first two episodes of a new series have just aired on BBC1 - I thought it was exceptionally good, did you enjoy it? (I may be biased as I loved the book as a child).

I haven’t watched it yet, am looking forward to it as I love David Tennant’s work.

Alegrias1 Sun 26-Dec-21 20:01:47

Yes - loved it.

No spoilers, but that train journey!! shock

I've not read the book, is it quite a faithful adaptation?

Wasn't particularly bothered about watching it but did and thoroughly enjoyed it. The actress playing the journalist is a new face to me bit thought she was especially excellent.

Ailidh Sun 26-Dec-21 20:25:55

I watched the first episode, and enjoyed it, especially Passepartout.

I've not read the book, only seen the David Niven/Cantinflas version, so I don't know if all the Paris drama is in the original or not.

Will definitely watch more.

Haven't watched it properly yet (it was on in the background while we were doing a 1,000 piece jigsaw) It must be 60 years since I read it but was there a woman in the book? I only remember him rescuing the Indian widow. And of course the balloon wasn't in the book. I'll give it a go because David Tennant is always worth watching.

Just finished episodes 1 and 2 back to back and I liked it- typical Boxing Day fare, I thought, something for all the family. Looking forward to more!

We were really looking forward to it but gave up after 20 mins. Just not what we were hoping for.

We were really looking forward to it but gave up after 20 mins. Just not what we were hoping for.

Shame you gave up. The first episode got off to a slow start, then gradually built up. The second was an absolute corker.

Wasn’t sure at first but I really enjoyed both episodes. Good to have something to look forward to watching.

We've recorded it. I love David Tennant.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 27-Dec-21 12:15:19

Excellent

BigBertha1 Mon 27-Dec-21 15:49:21

I'm hoping it will warm up a bit.

Aveline Mon 27-Dec-21 16:17:00

I don't know. The woke casting puts me off at once. I know I'll be jumped on for saying that but it's getting a bit ridiculous especially after the recent Darling Buds of May/The Larkins.

Grandmadinosaur Mon 27-Dec-21 16:21:26

I didn’t watch as was out but I’ve just read a headline online about the same such thing * Aveline*

Franbern Mon 27-Dec-21 18:14:18

Thought this was excellent, looking forward to rest of it.

Woodmouse Mon 27-Dec-21 18:43:02

Might give it another go then...

tidyskatemum Mon 27-Dec-21 19:05:20

It's been thoroughly joyless so fat. Not Christmas fodder at all. If I want miserable I can watch East Enders (perish the thought!)

Gwyneth Mon 27-Dec-21 20:31:23

Really enjoyed it and looking forward to the next episode.

Aveline Mon 27-Dec-21 21:28:43

They've thrown a lot of money at it and it looks beautiful but is not true to the book. Imposing today's values on historic stories jars too much for me.
Fair enough have diversity in casting and feminist characters in modern dramas that's appropriate, but don't spoil classic stories.

Casdon Mon 27-Dec-21 21:46:58

Aveline, have you watched it? I know the book really well, and it didn’t grate on me.

Passepartout is African, but he’s from France and slightly flaky as he was in the book, and Fix is female and a reporter rather than a detective but equally a thorn in Fogg’s side. It doesn’t come across as woke at all. They have followed the original journey so far, but with extra adventures on the way.

I don’t think a faithful reproduction would work now, and so far I’m impressed with the adaptation, although of course it is each to their own.

I started to watch it but became so irritated at the new casting characters that I stopped. It was a pity as it looked like a beautiful production.

Lincslass Tue 28-Dec-21 09:18:29

Did enjoy it, but they have altered the story to appeal to viewers who probably have never read the book, so therefore no comparison.

DanniRae Tue 28-Dec-21 09:39:00

I didn't much care for the first episode - I haven't read the book but felt it could have done with a little humour? BUT after reading all these posts I think I will give it another go and watch episode 2 tchsmile

Aveline Tue 28-Dec-21 11:01:09

I wish you joy of it. All I got was irritation.
