Not giving anything away if I say the main character gets amnesia after a car accident in the Australian outback. We don't know his name either.
Just wondered if anyone else thought his accent changes from Scottish to Northern Irish? Maybe just bad acting.

pamdixon: thought episode 5 was rather strange and confusing!

Another binge-watcher here. Just finished and it was 4 hours well spent. Thought Danielle MacDonald was brilliant in the role of Helen Chambers and there were some good comedy moments in amongst the violence and bad language.

Just watched ep 4 and laughed out loud several times. Don’t often do that! I just love Helen! Going to watch ep 5 after University Challenge!

gillyknits, I was wondering why no flies!

The main character sounds unquestionably Irish to me. I agree it was strange that no one at the hospital picked up on his accent.? I’ve just watched the first episode and initially thought that the bloke at the policewoman’s house looked more like her father! ?
I’m afraid the scenery didn’t inspire me to visit Australia any time soon. The plot’s interesting, though. Just about to watch Episode 2…

That's just one corner of a continent. It did look very arid and uninteresting, I admit.

The main character sounds unquestionably Irish to me.
His is the only speech I'm not following well. May need to use sub-titles as he sounds garbled to me.

It's a mixture of shocking and utterly naff ?

We got as far as episode 3, DH nearly gave up because he said it was boring and he told me off for laughing too and asking too many questions about the daft parts.

I always need subtitles anyway. I must be really dim because I can never understand what’s happening in anything that I watch and have to find a review of it.

Love it so far and love his accent
Australias never pulled me

Alioop Tue 04-Jan-22 08:15:46

My accent is just like Jamie Dornan's.... thank goodness I've never needed to write down what I'm saying to anyone. Watch The Fall that he's in, that'll get you used to the good old Northern Irish accent.

Just had a titter at our local Belfast news blog commenting on The Tourist and how could a Norn Irish man lose him memory in Australia. All they need to do is take a photo, put it on Twitter and someone here would know, his dad, granny, dog and does he stand a round at the pub. Simples.

It makes me cross that not only do most English people fail to know anything about Irish history but they don't understand that Ireland has a variety of accents, just as the UK does! His accent is without question Northern Irish.
Ever since Benedict Cumberbatch appeared in, was it Sherlock Holmes (?), TV crime type series have become quirky and self conscious, full of silly asides and caricatured personalities. I find it annoying. I am hanging on with this one though it's a very unbelievable plot.
I have visited Australia and I can't wait to go again. The landscape is stunning and the people genuinely friendly and helpful and quite innocent in a way.

I had to watch it all last night, I loved it. Concentration needed in episode 5, from me anyway.
Great acting, very funny in parts. I thought the scenery was beautiful.

kittylester Tue 04-Jan-22 09:09:28

I can't wait for the lovely probationary police officer to kick her awful partner into touch.

silverlining48 Tue 04-Jan-22 10:16:20

Episode 5 took some concentration. Does anyone know how many episodes there are!

There are 6 episodes, we binge watched them over 3 consecutive days.

JaneJudge Tue 04-Jan-22 10:34:11

I knew Ireland had a variety of accents but I am partly Irish I suppose (Grandparents were Irish)

I watched episode 5 last night confused

BlueBalou Tue 04-Jan-22 10:38:53

Episode 5 lost me completely, what on earth was it about?!
confused.com here ?

annodomini Tue 04-Jan-22 10:57:44

I've only watched the first two episodes and am not sure if I have the stamina to watch the remaining four. I kept having the urge to fast-forward!

DH did mention that! And, of course, Australian Immigration is very strict too.

Yes me too annodomini I am frustrated by it but not enough to give up.

This is very like the Coen Brother's film Fargo; black humour with lots of blood. Very good, mind you.

Petalpop Tue 04-Jan-22 12:58:50

His accent is Northern Irish to me. My mother was from Belfast and half my family speak with a similar accent. I have watched The Tourist all the way through on iPlayer and I enjoyed it.

Cambia

Kevin Maher has a column in The Times today discussing his accent!

Thanks for that. Mind you was it the article that also led on to Jamie’s twitter account that showed him going for a Christmas ( or was it New Year?) dip in the Irish Sea (swoon: and I thought I was too old for swooning). A very good explanation as to why there’s a bit of confusion about his accent. What a good actor he is, though. I gave up on The Fall, probably because the acting was so good and I found it far too chilling…and was never going to watch 50 shades. For those of us that have binge watched, when can we talk about the end without spoiling it for anybody. If anybody wants to pm me, feel free. I don’t know anyone in the real world who’s watched it and I so need to talk about it. I might actually just watch it all again!

They've got the internet in Australia too these days! His photo will be on a database somewhere.

Thank you Rosie. One more to go then, hope that clarifies the back story. Will watch later .
