Hello
When I was working, I watched very little TV, indeed hardly any at all.

Now that DH and I am extremely time rich, we have been catching up on the last 20+ years of TV.

We are currently on the final season of ‘Lark Rise to Candleford’, and I cannot believe how much I love it. I am utterly besotted!

(My favourite character is Pearl Pratt; DH’s is Minnie)

I’m feeling very spoiled by Lark Rise; and I’m struggling to think what could possibly be as enjoyable.

So what to watch next?
Any ideas?
What are your favourites?
Doesn’t matter how old, I won’t have seen it. (Unless it’s Downton Abbey or The Crown)

Thank you! x

Some very favourite oldies:

The Pallisers (24 episodes! All 6 of Victorian Anthony Trollope’s novels. First episode is a mite slow to start but I guarantee you’ll soon be addicted.

Upstairs Downstairs

The Duchess of Duke Street

Barchester Towers (also from the Trollope novels)

The Way We Live Now (Trollope again)

the original darling buds of may?

Witzend Wed 06-Apr-22 11:16:38

And how could I have forgotten the superlative 90s BBC version of Pride and Prejudice?

We watched Lark Rise to Candleford when it was on originally. It was wonderful. I also liked Cranford.

FannyCornforth Wed 06-Apr-22 11:21:25

Kate I was planning on watching Cranford next
Witzend I’ve heard some of The Pallisers on R4, and it does sound very intriguing
I think that DH would enjoy P&P.
My father is a Jane Austen nut!
Every birthday, Fathers Day and Christmas I buy him a JA inspired gift.
Thank you all!

I bought him this for Fathers Day last year Jane Austen Bust Succulent Planter - Plant Holder Pot for Small Cactus, Flowers, Herbs, and More www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00G4I60U6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_TKBJDCP89RNNXYW2Z1YF?tag=gransnetforum-21

Way back in 1970 (I know because I watched it on a Sunday night while feeding DD1) - Lewis Grassic Gibbon's Sunset Song.

FannyCornforth Wed 06-Apr-22 11:25:23

Aargh! Had that just linked to my account? Bugger!

Parsley3 Wed 06-Apr-22 11:26:29

I blush to say that I have binge watched Pride and Prejudice more times than is decent. I loved Lark Rise too.
If I get the chance I would like to watch When The Boat Comes In from the beginning. Young James Bolan was quite a charmer.

Kinsi10 Wed 06-Apr-22 11:28:52

Watched Larkrise when it was first shown. Had read the book some time previously. Loved the book, enjoyed the programme every bit as much.

Cranford is absolutely wonderful. I dare you not to cry at the end Fanny!

The Sunset Song thing.. I think its not available now and you have to get the DVD from the Grassic Gibbon Centre in Angus. Even then, they are not allowed to profit from it so you have to "buy" a leaflet and the DVD comes free!

no it doesn't, it takes people to their own account if they have one x

FannyCornforth I enjoyed it too - but my friend said it was like watching paint dry.

I particularly enjoyed it because some of the real life characters were my ancestors! (Not Flora)

JaneJudge Wed 06-Apr-22 11:31:51

sorry I hadn't realised you'd asked for period dramas when I suggested the darling buds of may grin I am going to blame covid

FannyCornforth Wed 06-Apr-22 11:34:32

Phew! Thanks Jane!

eazybee Wed 06-Apr-22 11:37:03

The original Forsyte Saga, if it is still available.

Wives and Daughters (Mrs. Gaskell)

Obviously, Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion.

The Jewel in the Crown

An Age of Kings (Shakespeare, Richard 11 to Richard 111, from 1960, brilliant)

I would recommend that you read 'Lark Rise to Candleford', because the TV adaptation is a travesty. (Sorry).

Kate1949 Wed 06-Apr-22 11:38:37

I hope you enjoy Cranford Fanny. I'm another one whole loved When The Boat Comes In. My husband is obsessed with the Pride and Prejudice series.

Grannmarie Wed 06-Apr-22 12:06:45

I remember enjoying The Far Pavilions and Elizabeth R in the 70s, I think, Fanny.

eazybee Wed 06-Apr-22 12:10:41

How could I forget!

I, Claudius

Henry V111 and Elizabeth R, both on recently.

Susie42 Wed 06-Apr-22 12:13:01

The Jewel in the Crown, Brideshead Revisited, and Our Friends in the North. There are also older versions of Our Mutual Friend and Bleak House if you can find them.

hazel93 Wed 06-Apr-22 12:16:07

Back in time I know but "The Glittering Prizes" and " Brideshead " have to be on the list.

JaneJudge Wed 06-Apr-22 12:17:23

my mum really liked Victoria

Littleannie Wed 06-Apr-22 12:19:59

I think I remember you saying you have Britbox Fanny. Don't forget The Forsyte Saga with Damien Lewis.
I love Britbox, I wallow in it most nights. For those who can't get the Britbox app on their smart TV, it is available as an add on channel on Prime at the same price as the stand alone version.

Jane43 Wed 06-Apr-22 12:27:48

As susie42 mentioned, Our Friends In The North was an excellent series, not period as such but the cast was excellent- Daniel Craig, Gina McKee, Christopher Eccleston and Mark Strong who all went on to great things. We enjoyed The Onedin Line as well. There were some wonderful Thomas Hardy series which always seemed to star Alan Bates - The Mayor Of Casterbridge and Jude The Obscure come to mind but my favourite Hardy was Tess Of The Durbervilles, I don’t think Alan Bates was in that.
