The Crème de La Crème of Period Dramas ? ? ?

Hello
When I was working, I watched very little TV, indeed hardly any at all.

Now that DH and I am extremely time rich, we have been catching up on the last 20+ years of TV.

We are currently on the final season of ‘Lark Rise to Candleford’, and I cannot believe how much I love it. I am utterly besotted!

(My favourite character is Pearl Pratt; DH’s is Minnie)

I’m feeling very spoiled by Lark Rise; and I’m struggling to think what could possibly be as enjoyable.

So what to watch next?
Any ideas?
What are your favourites?
Doesn’t matter how old, I won’t have seen it. (Unless it’s Downton Abbey or The Crown)

Thank you! x

I have now read the whole thread & no one has mentioned The Camomile Lawn yet, I remember loving that.

Have The Cazalet Chronicles by Elizabeth Jane Howard ever been televised ?

Shows what is currently showing on Drama

Oh my goodness, they have A Place to Call Home which puts everything else in the shade! It is absolutely wonderful with the most amazing storylines, costumes, scenery, sets. I believe this is the best thing I have ever watched.

Thanks Chestnut A Place to Call Home was on my watch list for ages but I never got around to watching it as there were so many episodes. It's an Australian drama based in the 1950's.

Definitely need to prioritise watching it.

You're very welcome HannahLoisLuke - I've just realised I've posted two YouTube videos on here, you can tell where I spend my time ?

The Camomile Lawn is on Britbox.

Yes, there was an adaptation of Howard's Cazalet novels twenty years ago with Hugh Bonneville as Hugh Cazalet. I don't know of it streaming anywhere.

There was talk of a remake a few years ago. Sid Gentle Films (The Durrells, Killing Eve) had acquired the rights so maybe it will be their next project.

A Place to Call Home - We watched several episodes in Australia and yes, it was very enjoyable.

I recorded it here but never got around to watching it all before our box stopped working.

Re A Place To Call Home

Apologies Chestnut!

I have just remembered that you recommended this to me months ago; and I still haven’t watched it.

Yes, I will prioritise it too. Thank you

Anyone remember The Cedar Tree?

FannyCornforth Fri 08-Apr-22 17:24:42

Yes, yes, yes.smile
I used to watch it when I was a little girl with my mom.
I’ve mentioned it before on here, and apparently it ‘might’ be repeated on TPTV

Callistemon21 Fri 08-Apr-22 17:24:48

Oh yes, I do.

And The Sullivans, another Aussie production.
Kylie Minogue's first screen appearance was in The Sullivans, age eight.

I enjoyed Berkeley Square when it was on TV. About nannies in the 1900's. It's on YouTube.

Mapp and Lucia was excellent. On a few years ago around Christmas.

Ooh I love Mapp & Lucia.
I have all of EF Benson’s books.
I recently watched the 1985 version with Prunella Scales and Geraldine McEwan. (I think that I got it from Amazon Video - it’s tricky to come by)
I haven’t seen the more recent version with Miranda Richardson and Anna Chancellor

Another fan of Mapp and Lucia but only 1985 version. i love Georgie played by Nigel Hawthorne and the fighting squabbles between Lucia and Mapp a delight, they were so well cast.

I cannot remember the name of the series about two sisters running a fashion house but it was very enjoyable. Was it ‘The Houe of Elliott’?

Witzend Sat 09-Apr-22 14:09:44

Oh, ditto to Mapp and Lucia! A delight!
I did enjoy the newer version, but the earlier one, with the peerless Nigel Hawthorne and Prunella Scales, is top notch. I now have it on DVD - a keeper.

A Place to Call Home was very good, one of the best Australian made series.

I would also like to see The Brothers and Howard’s Way, not strictly period dramas but very much of their time ie. the 70s and 80s respectively.

Littleannie Sun 10-Apr-22 23:20:03

Suep1953
I think both of them are on YouTube

suep1953 Mon 11-Apr-22 08:22:54

Thanks, I’ll have a look on YouTube

Thirdinline Mon 11-Apr-22 20:49:04

Talking of not strictly a period drama, but very much of its time, I would love to watch Georgie Girl. It would give a sense of how the 60s really were, rather than the Call the Midwife version. I think that’s why I like watching The Sweeney: unadulterated 70s wallpaper, attitudes & London how I remember it as a child.

I second Bridgerton and The Gilded Age.

I've also just finished watching Belgravia which was very good too.

The Luminaries

Lost in Austen an old one from 2008

Films .... The Personal History of David Copperfield (Dev Patel) Becoming Jane (Anne Hathaway) & Sense and Sensibility (Emma Thompson)
