Jeremy Paxman has announced he’s leaving UC after almost 30 years. I suspect his Parkinson’s is now a factor.
Who would GNs like to see take over, or do you think this programme has run its course?

Is Paxo not well, then?

He has MS

merlotgran Thu 18-Aug-22 12:18:33

He has Parkinson’s

Amal Rajan has got the job.

Good choice.

MissAdventure Thu 18-Aug-22 12:19:59

Oh I didn't know;
I really never read things about tv people.
I feel shocked now!

Visgir1 Thu 18-Aug-22 12:21:57

Amol Rajman.. I like him. Think he comes across well on Radio.
Yep okay choice from me.
As for the Diana thing.. He would have been 15 when she died? He is only 39 yrs

Yes you are correct, I have absolutely no idea why I typed MS as I was thinking Parkinson’s.

(I feel the people in white coats shall be coming for me any day now ?)

MissAdventure Thu 18-Aug-22 12:26:39

I'm shocked all over again now!
Parkinsons.

I have a theory (purely my own silly one) every single person with Parkinson I've ever met has been a gentle, kind soul.

I think Jo Brand would be a good candidate.

Absolutely....she's brilliant! :-)

Lizzie44 Thu 18-Aug-22 12:35:16

Disappointed to hear that Amal Rajan has been chosen. Samira Ahmed would have been my choice. Definitely needed a woman in this role after two male presenters. Ahmed has the clarity and incisiveness of a journalist and also comes over as warm and friendly. I was so pleased when she won her equal pay claim tribunal against the BBC over the difference between her pay and Jeremy Vine's for presenting a similar audience feedback programme. At least it's not Fiona Bruce (she already does loads of programmes) or Richard Osman (he's everywhere, too full of himself and too busy churning out novels).

Mallin Thu 18-Aug-22 12:39:57

Clare Balding would look right, act correctly and be a completely sensible choice for University Challenges next host.

Grammaretto Thu 18-Aug-22 12:45:30

Maybe Clare B turned it down?

Grammaretto Thu 18-Aug-22 12:50:13

Rajan has been on Radio 4 today programme for a year. He is popular, young, apparently quite clever, wants the job and just because I find his lazy, wink south London accent a bit hard on the ear...presumably he ticks their boxes.
Oh and he's easy on the eye.

MissAdventure Thu 18-Aug-22 12:51:57

Oh no!
We'll never hear the end of it if he doesn't enunciate properly!

missdeke Thu 18-Aug-22 13:04:44

Reading all the comments there is only one thing that's certain, some people will love them and others will hate them. Or possibly, like me, they won't much mind either way.

Annewilko Thu 18-Aug-22 13:22:58

Yes, great choice.

Bijou Thu 18-Aug-22 15:11:58

I don’t mind who takes over as long as they don’t axe the show.
What amazes me is the fact that the students often don’t know the answers to some of the easy general knowledge questions.

Bijou I’m often amazed by that too, though it does give me a boost when I can answer them!
I’m amazed that some of them can answer some of the questions where I can’t even make sense of what’s being asked.

Time for a woman - I’ll have a think!

Thank you for the names, I think either Mr. Monkman or Mr.Seagull would be good, they have both gone on to be presenters along with their experience of being a Contestant on UC.

IMO UC doesn’t need a famous name to carry it.

I'd have loved to have seen Bobbie Seagull present this, I remember him being on UC with his team and he was so natural and engaging. I'm not surprised he's more on TV now, seems to be a delightful young man.

Twitter has been full of Amol Rajan, and his dodgy connections.

HannahLoisLuke Thu 18-Aug-22 16:51:44

Victoria Coren Mitchell would be an excellent quizmaster/woman I think.
She has the intellectual heft and is pleasant and authoritative manner.
But they won’t choose her of course, it’ll be somebody “popular” but unsuitable.
I’d also say Fiona Bruce but she’s already doing too much.

HannahLoisLuke Thu 18-Aug-22 16:57:17

Ladyleftfieldlover

Vanessa Feltz - Cambridge educated etc., I think she would be perfect

No no not Vanessa. Undoubtedly clever but too loud and forever interrupting the people she’s talking to on the radio. No comedians either please. No Richard Osman either, too smug.
I’ve said who I’d like already but they won’t choose her.

Way past time- maybe someone a trifle less condescending next time ? I used to like Bamber.

Yes I liked Bamber too. So polite. “I’ll have to hurry you” as opposed to Paxman bawling “Come on”:
Do like Paxman though.

Grantanow Thu 18-Aug-22 17:41:16

Let's hope they don't take it off later. It's one of the few remaining good programmes in a morass of dumbed down, short attention span stuff.

lemsip Thu 18-Aug-22 18:30:17

Amol Rajan to be new host of University Challenge

oh dear, I don't like him!

aquagran Thu 18-Aug-22 18:37:42

Saw him on Richard Osman’s House of Games. Thick as two short planks!
