Anyone heard tonight’s episode? If not and you are a long time listener I advise you to listen on catch-up. No spoilers

eGJ Mon 23-Jan-23 19:20:39

SOME of the younger ones are growing on me, but Ruari isn’t one of them!

merlotgran Mon 23-Jan-23 20:03:49

That seed drills as good as ordered then. 🤔

Farzanah Mon 23-Jan-23 20:47:05

Do you think? 🤔

merlotgran Mon 23-Jan-23 20:59:13

I think Brian will throw in the towel, Adam will take over as senior partner and Stella will decide to leave.

eGJ Mon 23-Jan-23 21:12:53

Adam ( the actor that is) visited Daylesford Organics Farm Shop last week, so maybe he and Ian are going to set up a shop/ restaurant

vegansrock Tue 24-Jan-23 05:47:23

Is Bryan leaving as well? Isn’t the actor married to the Shula actor IRL?

lixy Tue 24-Jan-23 06:01:37

Yes, Brian and Shula are married in real life.

Adam and Ian's farm cafe would definitely be worth a visit, though I suspect it would be well out of my price range!

Always the unexpected with The Archers!

Wyllow3 Tue 24-Jan-23 06:12:44

It felt very sad, end of era and all, but not so much if she had been actively part of plots. But not Brian going too? I'm sad Shula won't be back despite her continuing annoying-ness.

"Chris and Alice going to see Ruari in London; that will put the cat amongs the pigeons!"

yes, could be interesting, caught in flagrante etc, or OTOH his chance to end it with good excuse.

Wyllow3 Tue 24-Jan-23 06:13:37

I don't think Peggy will "go" if Jenny AND Brian do, too much at once.

Franbern Tue 24-Jan-23 09:09:24

Apokogies, yes I confused Peggy and Jennifer (she of the posh kitchen_. Although I do listed regularly, I am not absolutely certain as to family relationships. So, Jennifer is the Mother of Adam, and Alice and step-mother to Rauri - am I correct?

Will this effect Alice's recovery? Will Brian now retire? When will Peggy do the decent thing - and die?

eGJ Tue 24-Jan-23 10:07:00

Franb Jennifer is mother of Adam, father Paddy Redmond, Debbie father Roger Travers Macy (will she return from Hungary for funeral?) Kate and Alice with Brian and step mother of Ruari (from affair with Siobhan)
Lots of interesting relationships and developments can be envisaged😀

merlotgran Tue 24-Jan-23 12:42:12

The scriptwriters have yet to decide what to do about Robert Snell as well. 🤔

I think the Bridge Farm lot will have plenty to say if Adam and Ian try and open a posh farm cafe/shop.

Taking Adam away from Home Farm was always a daft storyline. He was the heir apparent and Brian can’t go on forever. I think Stella will mess up and Brian will flounder without Jenny’s support. He’ll be outnumbered as a shareholder so cue the cavalry!

Iam64 Tue 24-Jan-23 12:49:41

Fran bern, the actor who has been wonderful as Jenny Dahling has been very ill.
Not wanting to start a war but I find your wish that Peggy do the decent thing and die very unpleasant. The actor who plays Peggy is still alive - she was born on 14.06.19 and was still playing Peggy until recently

I think the producers have pulled quite a coup there. The Archers was getting dull of late with a lot of new characters I can't relate to and a whole raft of very elderly characters whose final visit to St Stephen's churchyard has been anticipated for some time.

Maybe I'll make an effort to listen again, something I haven't done for some time now. I used to be a devotee.

Wyllow3 Tue 24-Jan-23 13:46:44

Well.... you'll find a new "youf" raft of characters like Chelsea who had an abortion and the Beth saga leaving Ben suicidal, and there have been objections from some older devotees to these developments, but there is a lot of mileage in the Chris/Alice saga, but getting more SL's from the 40 something generation which I expect will expand (the dreaded Kate, Pip, Rex, et al.)
One change I welcome is that way back in the day more working class characters were "humour" as in Grundys but thats changed.

LadyHonoriaDedlock Tue 24-Jan-23 14:46:46

Sounds like EastEnders Wyllow3. I was never a devotee of EastEnders, more a Corrie sort of lass myself, but I did watch a lot of 1980s episodes when I was doing my Masters. God, wasn't it/isn't it depressing!

EastEnders (and Brookside) were a new kind of soap in the 1980s that deliberately set out to confront social issues. More recently The Archers has been aspiring to that condition, but it really doesn't fit the format. For me, TA was always what somebody called dropping in on old friends for a cup of tea and a gossip, with drama limited to a cow with mastitis and topicality was about the rights and wrongs of grubbing up hedgerows. It should have stayed that way.

J52 Tue 24-Jan-23 14:47:30

I’ve listened off and on since I was a child, so have followed most of the past events and caught up with a few of the more recent ones.
I didn’t realise that the character was 78 years old, she always seemed younger to me.
I expect Tony will develop a more curmudgeonly role, he’s half way there already.

Franbern Wed 25-Jan-23 09:39:29

OOps, I had forgotten Debbie. Surely, they will have to have her back for the funeral. Isn't she in Rumania? And, of coutse, Kate!!! Really cannot stand that character. She just annoys me at every level. So, four of her own children from three different fathers and stepmother to her hubbies 'love child'.

I think it is great that The Archers employs the oldest actor in the world. But the character of Peggy really does need to be killed off.

However, my admiration for this programme having managed to pull off, something which is very rare these days - of killing off a major character in a Soap, without ANY advance information leaking out - not even that someone was going to be killed off.

Why is Rauri being so secretive about his relationship? Is he still going to college - or has he just become a 'kept' man? Hope they got back safely to Ambridge - seems to be a lot of driving for Chris - to London and back after a full days work.

eGJ Wed 25-Jan-23 10:03:55

Debbie’s in Hungary ( or Hollywood!) and doesn’t appear in next week’s cast list in the Radio Times. Perhaps the funeral is the week after next!

MawtheMerrier Wed 25-Jan-23 10:49:00

He is indeed a paid “escort” with “benefits” and I seem to have missed how this developed, not paying attention.

But I do remember a particularly acrimonious exchange with Alice during her recovery as an alcoholic which revealed some deep resentment.

eGJ Wed 25-Jan-23 19:15:56

What a sad episode

NotSpaghetti Wed 25-Jan-23 20:44:28

Yes. Grim tonight. And unlikely.

silverlining48 Wed 25-Jan-23 23:06:01

Missed today so will catch up on Sunday’s omnibus.

Nana3 Fri 27-Jan-23 10:42:54

David turning up so we could all hear Brian's thoughts.
I struggle to feel sorry for him.

merlotgran Fri 27-Jan-23 11:17:53

In the real world Stella wouldn’t be able to order the seed drill without the go ahead from the board of directors. Brian could vote against it but it wouldn’t be his decision alone.

She should inform the suppliers of the death of one the directors and hold out for a better deal.
