Just thought it might be an idea to have a thread for sharing thoughts and comments this Wimbledon fortnight for those who follow.

Thinking too of Lucca, tennis' no.1 fan.

Ons Jabeur

Watched the Carlos Alcaraz match - brilliant tennis, very exciting.

I take it all back - they have sorted it out grin

I think rain stopped play on the outside courts

I like Medvedev 🤞

Not picked up the crochet yet.

Ah no - not at the time that I posted - but honestly just ignore me, I am being grumpy because I really feel the Beeb's coverage is lacking grin
Watched the Alcaraz (sp) match - it was excellent!

Yes, it's making us grumpy too!!

As for "Teatime News" - I was expecting some delicate cucumber sandwiches, a piece of Victoria sponge and a cup of Earl Grey to arrive.
(I was disappointed.)
It's just BBC News!

Yes it was but am I the only one who keeps wanting to call him Alcatraz?

Yes, it was good.

Looks like The Greek God is playing in the Doubles too, with his brother. How fit is that?😉
Is it a case of double swoon ❤️➕❤️

Callistemon21 Sat 08-Jul-23 20:30:15

I really want Hons Jabeur to win.
The Candian is annoying, wandering around and making Jabeur wait to serve.

lixy Sat 08-Jul-23 20:39:05

Zverev vs Berrettini anyone?
I would like both to win. It's a super match.

Callistemon21 Sat 08-Jul-23 20:41:29

Well played, Ons. I'm happy 🙂

Bianca Andreescu will be back, I'm sure.

ixion Sat 08-Jul-23 20:42:57

It is indeed, lixy
Crowd irritating at times tho'.

lixy Sat 08-Jul-23 21:46:53

Hmm, yes. The 'out' call from the crowd was really poor.

Pleased with the result - and the next round will be amazing I hope.

bridie54 Sat 08-Jul-23 22:57:30

Was also pleased to see Ons Jabeur win, and didn't like the way her opponent made her wait to serve either.
Unfortunately/fortunately tennis was interrupted by a call from DS and DGS in NZ.
I'll catch up on results tomoro.

It is fine for fans to be able to watch every game. Why do the rest of us have to watch it through again on the news?

Juicylucy Sun 09-Jul-23 11:18:22

I go with my daughter to the men’s semi final every year. It’s fantastic atmosphere even better if there’s a Brit still in it. No one does it better than Wimbledon.

TanaMa Sun 09-Jul-23 11:49:38

Don't like Djokovic at all. Hate that he always seems to get 'easy' opponents in the early rounds , and of course Federer (GOAT)!! and Rafa (GIAT No 2)!! are not playing, making it still easier for him. Just hope one of the up and coming young, hopeful, players will knock him off his arrogant perch!!

Amalegra Sun 09-Jul-23 12:19:44

I don’t watch Wimbledon as not a tennis fan. Doesn’t impact me as rarely watch the BBC channels anyway (although I’m forced to pay the licence fee!). I know a lot of people get pleasure from watching and it is part of the summer, isn’t it? However, as with most sports these days, I do find both the game and the players completely overhyped!

DamaskRose Sun 09-Jul-23 12:24:59

Never been a fan of Djokovic, he appears quite smug at times. Always been a fan of Nadal and am supporting Alcaraz who seems such a nice guy. Would always support Andy Murray against anybody. As for the ladies it’s Petra Kivitova or Ons Jabeur.
Wimbledon is one of the sporting highlights of the year for me but there has been too much chat this year for my liking. And don’t get me started on John Inverdale, felt sorry for Feliciano Lopez the other day who was too polite to do anything but laugh at him, unlike Steve Redgrave at the olympics one year! 😂 And I hate all the ultra slow motion stuff, sometimes at the expense of actual play!
Rant over!

pce612 Sun 09-Jul-23 12:27:05

Not in the least bit interested. I know I'm not the only one.
The BBC is obsessed with it, should have it's own sports channel.

Anyone watch Medvedev playing Fery (GB) earlier this week? He's only 20 and a wild card - I think Medvedev thought it would be a walk in the park, but he played really well, went after the ball, great serve and volley - I reckon he's someone to watch.

Foxyferret Sun 09-Jul-23 12:36:45

It’s only two weeks every year. No more French open on the Beeb or the November tournament at the O2 so please dont begrudge the tennis fans their 2 weeks. Not everyone can afford Sky tv.

Ditto. Would love to see him beaten this time. Tsitsipas or Alcaraz could manage it.

I’m not a tennis fan.😴 BBC1 and 2 were monopolised by it last night.
I much prefer to watch the Tour de France (ITV4) - the scenery was beautiful (Dordogne). Lots of châteaux and sunflowers!
I felt so sorry for Mark Cavendish - he crashed out with a broken collarbone.😧 He seems such a nice person - I’ve followed his career for years. Pro cyclists are top athletes. They don’t get the praise they deserve.

I wonder sometimes whether BBC commentators are paid by the word. Incessant wittering in what appears to be an attempt to fill every second of airtime. Sometimes interesting, sometimes just talk for the sake of it. Queens and Eastbourne were classic examples.
The mute button chez Ixion is well used.

I miss Dan Maskell.
