I've just watched A Timeless Christmas on Channel 5 and really enjoyed it. Most of the movies in this genre are very predictable but this one had a better plot than many.

Christmas Chronicles with gorgeous Kurt Russel as FC (and in CC2 Goldie Hawn is Mrs C !) Best Christmas films ever.
Close second is Elf which I watched for first time only last year - brilliant!

My number 1 is The Muppets Christmas Carol, closely followed by Its a wonderful life and Miracle on 34th Street (the Richard Attenborough one). I love Christmas and everything about it . The commercialisation these days is annoying but it provides a warm glow through the dismal winter months. I will wait until after bonfire night before I start watching the films though!

DH bought us “Rare exports” subtitled and a bit grim but absolutely fabulous!
it’s an antidote to all the twee Christmas movies.
We watch it every year and love its

My three musts are The Muppet Christmas Carol, Love Actually and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

Sara1954 Tue 24-Oct-23 22:09:56

Yes the National Lampoon film is so funny, we watch it every year.

Thisismyname1953 Tue 24-Oct-23 22:24:47

I like to watch Die Hard , It’s a wonderful life , Elf, Miracle on34th Street and my favourite is Bad Santa .

My old fave is White Christmas - watch it every year. My new fave is Last Christmas with Emilia Clark. About a ditzy girl who has had a heart transplant and falls in love (with a twist of course!) with George Michael music. If you want total Christmas kitch try Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square. It’s so bad it’s good!

I think it's called The Christmas bunny ..... A lovely film!

Eloethan Tue 24-Oct-23 23:52:59

I'm not keen on Christmas either - at least not all the commercialisation, though I do enjoy having all the family round.

I generally wouldn't watch a film specifically about Christmas, and I don't know why It's a Wonderful Life is so popular.

I do enjoy The Great Escape though - not a Christmas film but often shown at Christmas.

some of us have a reason to hate Christmas and all the hype that goes with it and i am one of them as for the films why do they always seem to start christmas films in September on tv then over Christmas put on war films

DanniRae Wed 25-Oct-23 10:20:09

I hesitate to say this but despite all my family loving it I don't like It's a Woderful Life!!

I hesitate to say this but despite all my family loving it *I don't like It's a Woderful Life!!*

We started watching it one Christmas and didn’t realise it was such a long film. Almost had to give up on it. We have, since been to see it at the cinema at Christmas time which is quite Christmassy as everyone claps at the end.

Dottynan Wed 25-Oct-23 16:26:20

I do think its a shame when some us enjoy talking Christmas films and all things Christmas and every few messages someone says they hate Christmas. There are few things, as in politics, that I dislike. I therefore do not go to those pages.
The people that enjoy politics and other things and free to enjoy without my negative thoughts.

Sara1954 Wed 25-Oct-23 18:09:47

I have mixed feelings Dottynan, I really enjoy everything Christmassy including Christmas films, but the day itself I find stressful, I used to love everyone staying, and wall to wall parties and meals, but I admit to being happy when they’ve all gone home these days.
But, I still embrace it, there’s lots to enjoy

Grandmabatty Wed 25-Oct-23 18:37:58

This was a thread started to recommend Christmas films. I do not understand people who hate Christmas for whatever reason jumping on the thread. Dottynan I agree with you. If you don't have any recommendations to give, pass on by.

Jaxjacky Wed 25-Oct-23 18:40:14

Dottynan others may have lost loved ones at Christmas or recently, they may have an horrendous Christmas memory.
Not all associate it with positive feelings.

Joseann Wed 25-Oct-23 18:54:06

I'm confused why Ashcombe's mention of an upbeat funny film, which has prompted other posters to recommend uplifting choices, and which is a radio, TV, Film topic, should now be drawing criticism.

Visgir1 Wed 25-Oct-23 19:29:23

I saw "Arthur Christmas" for the first time last year with my GD, it's was really good..
But still like Elf (I'm seeing the stage version next month) interesting.
White Christmas
Miracle on 34th street
The Great Escape (I know not a Christmas film)
Christmas Chronicles
The ones with Tim Allen
In fact I like Christmas films and books.

Ashcombe Wed 25-Oct-23 21:37:44

Thank you, Dottynan, Grandmabatty and Joseann for your posts. To be honest, I hadn't expected so many responses so it's good to read the recommendations. I really didn't set out in the original post to be contentious so have been rather surprised by the strength of reaction from some posters.

There are other topics covered on this website that don't interest me particularly but I wouldn't criticise those who post on them. I suppose we could say the Christmas police are alive and well .................. And I always thought the advice was to post early for Christmas!

My two favourites are less well known:

The Bishop's Wife with Cary Grant, David Niven and Loretta Young. Cary Grant is an angel sent to help David Niven, who is a vicar. It's B&W, but beautifully shot.

A Christmas Story - about a little boy in 1940s USA who wants a BB gun for Christmas - it's delightful.

A Christmas Story is my favourite too!
