Did any of you watch this harrowing first part, last night on Channel 4. It was truly shocking and sickening.

Most 'interesting' was how, in such a situation, the natives are portrayed back home as monsters who kill innocent women and babies - the white settlers- when in fact the native aborigines are killed in their 1000s in the most violent, sickening and vile way, or shot in the back, or pushed down cliffs into the ocean in their 100s- whilst their land is taken away.

It is or has been a sick country towards its ethnic population I had hoped it had improved
I didn’t see this documentary
Have you ever watched the film Rabbit Proof Fence Fleurpepper it’s the one film that has stayed with me ever since I saw it years ago The treatment by the government towards the aboriginal children, tearing them away from their families was harrowing

The use of are and is in the OP is disingenuous, Bluebelle.

This is the tragic history of Tasmania from over 150 years ago. White Aystraliahs are not still pushing native Australians over cliffs and land is being returned to Aboriginal peoples.

Callistemon21 Wed 15-Nov-23 23:13:25

Typo, sorry.

BlueBelle Wed 15-Nov-23 23:16:48

I quite clearly said ‘is or was’ and I didn’t use the word ‘are’ at all callistamom

Callistemon21 Wed 15-Nov-23 23:21:21

No, but it is in the OP as if it is a present-day event when we know this happened 200 years ago.

I was correcting the terminology in the OP.

Yes it has.

Tasmania can't be returned to people with solely Aboriginal descent because they've died out.

A UN agency was forced to remove a “hurtful” document that for more than 40 years publicly claimed Tasmanian Aboriginal people were extinct

You know how in language lessons you used to be given a paragraph and were told to transcribe be it in its entirety in another tense ?.
May I respectfully suggest that the quoted section should be in the past tense because reading it as it is written, OP is claiming these things are happening at the present which is of course, nonsense. (Or sloppy writing)

That was the point I was trying to make, not criticising what you wrote, Bluebelle 🙂

You may also recall that in literary analysis, the present tense is used.

Many Aboriginal women , some every week, would dump their babies outside missionary camps in the 1950s. I know this from a missionary doctor. The babies were fed, educated and cared for but , of course, they are now called ‘stolen’. There are two sides to everything.

Callistemon21 Thu 16-Nov-23 10:38:11

Rabbit Proof Fence was set in the 1930s.

That was 90 years ago.

I know that.
I've been there.

However, it is wrong to state that there is no-one of Tasmanian Aboriginal descent left.
It is denying people their heritage.9

Callistemon21 Thu 16-Nov-23 10:43:22

And - the convicts sent out to Tasmania had a rotten time as well.
Port Arthur might seem beautiful now but the history of that place gives it an eerie feel.

We learn lessons from history and resolve to do better.

Sadly I doubt there are many countries that do not have a dark past and many that still have a dark present. Did anyone see the "Who do you think you are?" featuring the Van Tullekin twins, they were so shocked to discover they had ancestors who had been heavily involved in the slave trade. They talk to someone who tells them that he too has ancestors who made money from slavery then he said he was also descended from slaves but they shouldn't feel guilty as it was a different time with a different way of looking at things. Worryingly I don't think everyone has moved on as much as they should and still consider someone with a different coloured skin, a different religion or a different culture to be of less value as a human which is at the heart of how such cruelty can happen.

I'm not arguing with that, which is why I didn't claim it.

Unfortunately, yes.

People in the UK , particularly England, seem to like to do that. Very different from other countries which tend to regard patriotism in a positive way. I feel proud to have been born in England, just as I am proud to be Australian for the past 50 years. Both are two of the best countries in the world as far as I’m concerned. Not the politicians, ( hell no ) the countries and the peoples.

They do but I'm not sure if the OP resides in the UK now.
