The Gone - BBC IPlayer

There's a new series that has recently been loaded on to BBC IPlayer, an Irish/New Zealand collaboration. Irish Detective leaves his native Dublin to team up with his female New Zealand counterpart to jointly investigate the disappearance of a young Irish couple who have been in NZ for a few months. Watched the first episode last night, ok so far. Filmed in the north island, outside Auckland somewhere, looks lush and green a bit like Wales. Might be of interest to those who have been out to NZ, I'm half watching it for the scenery, we have friends in that part of the world.

Callistemon21 Thu 21-Mar-24 15:45:44

It's very slow, very mumbly and dark.
No, we couldn't get the subtitles on iPlayer either so I think we might have to give up on it, which is a pity.

I'm disappointed.

BlueBelle Thu 21-Mar-24 17:29:20

Callistemon there are subtitles with it up in the right hand corner there’s like a speech bubble but it’s square not round and click on that and there’s your subtitles

I m loving it I think it’s really good drama with some good acting and so far a good story line

We gave it a go but didn’t like it much, tbh found it slow, boring with the usual detectives on the case, in this instance both of them, with personal demons.Combo of Irish and NZ accents hard to follow.

Oh, thanks, I'll give it a go.

I really wanted to like this but by episode 2 I realised that it was very derivative of another similar but much much better series that was on not so long ago.

And all the dynamics between the characters were just the usual tropes of Maorie versus everyone else, young female mixed heritage police officer torn between her “culture” and her career, with the usual conflict over land rights and possible shady goings on,
Her Mum who died in poss suspicious circumstances but who everybody loved, …then the Irish man -a police/detective who has jacked in his job back home- also loved by his colleagues - “ great bloke” the best etc etc but then gets into fisticuffs with the local “youths” and comes of worse, getting beaten up in the street in fact.
So then said “cop” jumps on a plane to NZ making sure to take his hurley stick or whatever it’s called with him just so everyone knows he is IRISH
Barely any mention of the young man and women whos disappearance they are meant to be investigating, just lots of banal padding and inferences of romantic involvements.
Big yawn 🥱 still looking for something better

Callistemon21 Thu 21-Mar-24 22:24:47

Barely any mention of the young man and women

Only watched a couple of episodes so far but we did think they needed to get on with the search instead of concentrating on themselves and their problems.

BlueBelle Thu 21-Mar-24 23:08:25

Well I m loving it grandmarda best you don’t watch any more
I’m half way through and enjoying it very much I ve not seen the similar one you’re talking about so all good for me

Callistemon21 Thu 21-Mar-24 23:10:15

I'll persevere, if I can find the subtitles!

Granmarderby10 Fri 22-Mar-24 09:30:42

Callistemon on my iplayer screen whilest “in play” point your remote right up to the left hand of the screen and there are 3 icons and I think it’s the third one that switches them on or off

Callistemon21 Fri 22-Mar-24 10:05:27

Thank you 🙂

I really wanted to watch Fat Friends again, Ruth Jones, Alison Steadman, but there are no subtitles!
I’m deaf now, so I’m very disappointed.

Another vote for Australian dramas. Loved Five Bedrooms.

I am enjoying it so far it’s slower paced with great family backstory and I love that it’s in new zealand

granfromafar Fri 22-Mar-24 18:40:25

I finally managed to get the subtitles in episode 6, so will have to watch the earlier ones to see what I missed! On our TV, whilst on pause mode, there was an option on the bottom left of the screen, so must vary according to manufacturer.

Barbadosbelle Sat 23-Mar-24 11:21:31

..

So agree, Chestnut. I do love the Aussie output of series.
And ‘5 Bedrooms’ and ‘Colin from Accounts) are superb.

May I suggest a few other series that I have enjoyed over recent years (some more than once!). A few are about 20-years old but it doesn’t matter, they still work. All are available on AmazonPrime, FreeVee, iPlayer or channel Catch-ups.

‘Mystery Road’ - Police series with the amazing Aaron Pederson

‘Rake’ - Legal series. Very funny. And naughty - especially the episode guest starring Sam Neil ………

‘Jack Irish’ - Detective. Ex-Police. Starring Guy Pearce.

‘The Newsreader’ - Set in a television studio starring Anna Torv

‘Secret City’ - Political conspiracy (also with Anna Torv)

‘The Heart Guy’ - A top surgeon forced to return to work in his small home town. Stars the gorgeous Rodger Corser. a.k.a. ‘Doctor Doctor’

‘McLeod’s Daughters’ - Life, Trials, Romance; set on a ranch inherited by two half-sister with differing ideas of what they want to do with it - run v. sell. My husband actually rather enjoyed this too.

‘Wanted’ - Exciting drama about two young ladies (strangers) who witness a murder whilst waiting for a bus. They then have to go on the run to escape the murderers and a corrupt senior policeman.

‘Darby & Joan’ - Just been on television. Starring the fabulous Greta Saachi and Bryan Brown. Man dies in Australia when he’s supposed to be on business in Spain. Wife goes there to find out why and ‘bumps’ into ex-cop who helps her. Delightful, great scenery and marvellous marvellous acting from the two leads who look like real people (grey hair/not stick-thin).

MY NUMBER ONE …

‘A Place to Call Home’ - set just post-war and very atmospheric. An Austalian nurse returning by sea to Australia after working in Europe meets the wealthy Bligh family on board where she sees a family secret. She ends up working in the Cottage Hospital in ‘their town’ where she falls in love with the son and gains the hatred of the family matriarch (the fantastic Noni Hazlehurst) because they are the only two who knows the ‘family secret’. Amazing series that I’ve watched three times over the years and know that I will watch yet again.

WHAT I’M WATCHING NOW …

‘City Homicide’ - Police series set in Melbourne. From 2006-2011. Very exciting. Very dramatic. Can be rather gritty at times. Stars Nadine Gardner from ‘The Doctor Blake Mysteries’ fame and also Noni Hazlehurst from ‘A Place to Call Home’.

I like to watch an episode of something in bed on my iPad late at night (whilst my husband and son watches some man-thing downstairs - at present ‘Road House’ which definitely isn’t for me! This is my present bedtime fix. 84 episodes over 5-series. I’m on Episode 24 so quite a few happy watching hours still ahead of me!

I hope that this isn’t too boring/long a comment but I feel that it could introduce some Austalian Television virgins to series that might interest them and occupy a lonesome hour or two.

By the way, I’m not Australian - and haven’t ever been there!!

P.S. a newish Australian film to finish off with that we watched a couple of weeks ago on AmazonPrime….. ‘Palm Beach’ starring Bryan Brown, Sam Neill, Richard E Grant. Reunion at the Palm Beach Sydney home of the ex-manager of a rock-band to celebrate his 70th birthday with the players of the band and their families. Very lovely Sunday afternoon film.

Barbadosbelle

Thank you for the list, TV is generally so boring just now so I'll look out for these.

Darby & Joan - we just watched this and hope there's another series. Love the scenery and trying to work out where they are. At one point I'm sure they stood under a tree where I lay on a sunbed 😁 but half an hour later said they were "going up to Noosa" which is 24 hours south!
There are a lot of trees on beaches over there. 🏝

Callistemon21 Sat 23-Mar-24 11:35:39

and also Noni Hazlehurst from ‘A Place to Call Home’.

Noni Hazlehurst used to present Play School. Have you seen her YouTube video persuading a child to go to sleep? (not for those of a nervous disposition 😁)
The story today is about a little baby who doesn't want to go to sleep. And the baby is making Mummy and Daddy very tired

Chestnut Sat 23-Mar-24 12:42:28

Thanks for the list Barbadosbelle

I have mentioned A Place to Call Home many times on these threads as it is absolutely outstanding.

The Newsreader is also outstanding, Series 3 is in progress.

I have also watched The Dr Blake Mysteries which was very good.

You haven't mentioned these two, which I watch regularly on Amazon Freevee:
All Saints - hospital drama series from the 1990s.
Blue Heelers - Police drama series from the 1990s. Local Police force where they go out if someone pinches a chocolate bar from the shop! It's really great, easy watching but not boring, and likeable characters that you care about.

I'm so sorry, this thread has been well and truly hijacked. Should have had a separate thread for Aussie drama.

Very disappointed with the ending...must be a new Series in the making?? I did enjoy the beautiful scenic shots but storyline a bit weak ...

I just came on to say this - what happened at the end? It's sort of obvious I suppose how it will continue if there is another series, but I'm not sure I can be bothered starting all over again with it in 6 months or whatever. NZ did look lovely though.

Good suggestions, barbadosbelle.
Have just seen a new Australian drama advertised starting this Thursday, 9pm ITV, called The Twelve, starring San Neill. Looks promising.

Yippeee! I’ve found the subtitles! 🥳

Thank you, Bluebelle

Oh, I like Sam Neil!!

Certainly our TV drama production over here is looking rather inadequate by comparison.

Streaky Sat 23-Mar-24 17:10:29

Thank you for the list, Barbadosbelle. I love Australian/NZ dramas so I have made a note of them all, and have already started watching City Homicide. I am also a big Sam Neill fan and will be watching Palm Beach tonight!

I loved A Place to Call Home.
