How do we think Alison did?

The fears on GN were that she would be too loud on the Love of Dogs programme. I thought she came across well and mostly spoke softly. Paul was a hard act to follow, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I don't remember her screeching at all in this programme. I think some people who have commented have pre-judged her and not even watched.

I appear to be in the minority as I really like Alison Hammond, she comes across as natural, extremely kind and not pretentious.

Like her or not has nothing to do with her on this programme
the dogs should be centre

You’ve missed a treat Callistemon21 if you haven’t seen Lady and The Tramp. I’m sure you’ll know The Siamese Cat song (Peggy Lee) and others from the film.

Back to the thread and I’m sorry to say I missed AH’s first outing of the series. However, I’m not a fan of hers and think they could’ve found someone ‘more qualified’ to front such a programme.

I wasn't aware of her screeching either.

There was a much higher percentage of dogs on the screen than there was Alison.

She was better than I expected but I find her clothes distracting. When she got down on the floor with the dogs she looked like she was wearing a giant nappy!

That was a poop pad as they were filming the puppy pooping.

It’s the reason why, as soon as I was old enough to have my own dog, I had Cocker Spaniels!

Callistemon21 Thu 18-Apr-24 10:13:19

Yes, I've had a cocker spaniel.

Must watch it, Maybee 😁

I don't think criticising someone's presentation style and wondering if she is the right person for a particular programme is trolling.

I think she's the woman on The Bakeoff and she's good on there.

OldFrill Thu 18-Apr-24 10:27:29

Callistemon21 - Alison has discussed in detail in the media her surprise/shock at the "trolls" and level of "trolling" she's been subjected to. Fortunately she seems to have a thick skin but l suspect Paul would be horrified at the way people have criticised her. I'm not a fan, and haven't watched her in much else, but she does come across as kind and caring in the programme (and voice level appropriate).

Alison Hammond is getting to be like Philip Schofield and Rylan
She's everywhere ,too much of her
Not right for this programme

Washerwoman Thu 18-Apr-24 13:03:59

I haven't watched it yet but have to admit I really like her in Bake Off.And didn't expect to.

Aveline Thu 18-Apr-24 14:14:15

I've turned off Bake Off due to her. Bring back Sandi Toksvig. She was warm and subtly entertaining.

Lollin Thu 18-Apr-24 14:43:31

I prefer Sandi Toksvig on QI really laugh at that programme while learning amazing snippets.

I’ve often thought celebrities seem to be flavour of the decade appearing or presenting everything until the next batch comes along. Could it be their contracts and like when the same films or TV programmes are repeated over and over they’ve paid for it so flog it endlessly.

I found PaulO’Grady was loud early on then once established able to tone it right down and be himself. As someone said earlier I think he’d be saddened by the criticism. She’s doing a good job and as we hear being in the media industry breaks some and sadly their families hurt too.

Let’s not forget some appear to have a thick skin then later we hear just how bad it was for them.

Many occupations bring criticism

MissAdventure Thu 18-Apr-24 14:54:34

I didn't watch it, because I don't like her.

Anniebach Thu 18-Apr-24 14:58:51

I will not watch further programmes,

sharon103 Thu 18-Apr-24 15:10:56

I like Alison on Bake Off.
For the Love of dogs seemed very flat. Just didn't have that spark for me.
We know it's a hard act to follow after Paul but to me there just wasn't any connection between Alison and the dogs.
No doubt I'll continue to watch. Miss you Paul.

Charleygirl5 Thu 18-Apr-24 15:28:16

I was pleasantly surprised as she appeared to care for the dogs and there was no guffawing or loudness. She does not appear to know much about dogs so has a steep learning curve. I agree, it should not be a follow on what Paul did- he was so caring and loved the dogs. It is an impossible act to follow.

She does not own a dog but perhaps her lifestyle does not allow her to care for it properly.

I cannot think who could have filled Paul's shoes.

Washerwoman Fri 19-Apr-24 20:24:59

Martin Clunes would be a great alternative. Warm, funny and a huge animal lover.

Aveline Fri 19-Apr-24 20:35:04

Martin Clunes absolutely loves animals. He'd be very good in that job.

MissAdventure Fri 19-Apr-24 21:57:13

He would get my vote.
He has a nice gentle demeanor, too.

Anniebach Fri 19-Apr-24 22:10:30

Some who loves dogs and has a nice gentle demeanour? yes,
yes, yes

Alison Hammond is the flavour of the month at present, popping up everywhere or so it seems! I dare say the novelty will wear off in time and we will see less of her. It’s happened before with lots of presenters and seems to be an oft repeated tactic of TV executives. Get what they think is a winning formula and flog it to death! I wish they would be a bit more imaginative and give other people a chance!
