Anyone watching? I like Jenna Coleman, but not sure we need another child grooming story. Also hadn't realised there were two different time scales!

BevSec Tue 16-Jul-24 18:21:04

I persevered and did end up enjoying it.

Whoever wrote that article needs to brush up on his knowledge of England. I assume it’s a southerner who doesn’t have a clue about ‘the north’. Just because a lake was involved, it has to be the Lake District! There is a lake in Lancashire, you know as the Lake District is all in Cumbria! Is that also the reason for some of these remarks about not understanding the characters? We don’t all speak the King’s English you know but can still be understood.

Watched 20 minutes and got bored so turned it off.

TerriBull Tue 16-Jul-24 20:00:14

It's been mooted as "could this be the new Happy Valley?" whoever said that, you've gor to be kidding! Only watched episode 1, wasn't that smitten, especially after the stable scene, not sure if I want to continue with it.

Deedaa Tue 16-Jul-24 20:40:45

As usual a lot of running around in the dark, dodgy sound, and a mother looking younger than her daughter. And is there really anyone called Ember?

Iam64 Tue 16-Jul-24 21:28:48

It’s filmed around Hollingsworth Lake an area surrounded by wild beautiful countryside . I’m enjoying the scenery
acknowledge Jenna Coleman doesn’t look or behave like any detectives I know but hey ho. I think she’s 34 and her daughter 17
I agree with others, the stable scene was depraved and a bridge too far for me. The actor playing the damaged dangerous rich kid is doing enough to scare me without scaring the horses
I’ll watch episode 2

Well, I thought it was a typo and meant Amber.

I’m enjoying it. Looking forward to episode 3.

If the stable scene was what I thought it was then the BBC has reached new depths of depravity.

Yes it was what you thought it was. That’s when I switched off 😡

I couldn’t help but wonder what will happen to the rich depraved damaged young woman. So far, she has no redeeming features, something that often predicates a Terrible Fate.

Poppyred Wed 17-Jul-24 09:03:39

I wonder why the police woman hasn’t spoken to the missing girls friend, Catelyn? I think she had something to do with it.

keepingquiet Wed 17-Jul-24 09:14:23

I started watching because there was nothing else on. Like many, it didn't grip me and used a lot of common tropes Happy Valley did much better.

I don't know at what point I realised the school segments were flashbacks. Maybe I was slow on the uptake.

However, by the end I was hooked and admit to binge watching.

No spoilers, but it had so many twists and turns I felt dizzy by the end!

Reasonably entertaining but by no means original (except one storyline, which did keep me watching) and I doubt there will be a second series. Filled a few hours.

Farzanah Wed 17-Jul-24 09:46:53

I thought the acting was poor, the plot was unbelievable and it seems to have ended in the middle! (Watched all 4 episodes).

Oh Lord, I was really hoping it wasn’t that….. angry

We weren’t impressed by episode 1 at all, but the twist at the end was interesting so we carried on with the second episode. I’m now into the story and we’ll probably watch the other two episodes tonight.

I had to sit closer to the screen though and put the subtitles on. With DH’s dodgy ears and my dodgy eyes we were struggling!

Doodledog Wed 17-Jul-24 10:29:38

I wanted to finish some knitting and stayed up late last night, so watched the whole thing. Without giving too much away, I guessed the premise of the outcome ages ahead, which is always a disappointment, as I hope to be proved wrong.

The scenery was good. I doubt there will be a series 2, but I think I would watch it if they made one. 6/10 for me.

kittylester Wed 17-Jul-24 10:30:11

We are sort of hooked now. DH adjusted something on our sound bar which helped with the dialogue.

Farzanah Wed 17-Jul-24 12:05:56

There are so many holes in the plot, which I won’t mention until the series is finished. The script is dire too.

Iam64 Wed 17-Jul-24 21:47:19

I’ve just finished it. I enjoyed the scenery of course, wild northern countryside and Hollingsworth Lake always a treat.
I read Jenna Coleman has previously turned down roles as a detective but liked this one.
Some interesting themes but I found the way sone filming seemed to be done in the dark a challenge.
I’d give happy valley and line of duty 12 out of 10. I’ll join Doodledog in giving this a 6 out of 10

kittylester Wed 17-Jul-24 22:03:45

Wae have just watched episode 3. I have no idea what us going on at all.

Crossstitchfan Wed 17-Jul-24 23:51:54

I really disliked this drama.
I was shocked by the stable scene, which was totally revolting, I failed to see why it was even there as it was not a necessary part of the story at all.
Jenna Coleman’s acting is wooden. The other actors are as bad if not worse. Even the usually ok Amelia Bullimore was poor. (I think she must have been desperate for a part to lower herself to this).
I tried to like this, because I normally like the main actors and the story sounded good but I was very disappointed in this. I really can’t bring myself to watch any more. I have a cutlery drawer that needs tidying and that will be much more entertaining and far less disgusting!
Come on, BBC, you can surely do better than this!

If you are correct and Jenna Colman liked this drama after turning others down, then she has gone WAY down in my estimation.
We haven’t seen her for a while until now though, so maybe she needed the money.
She isn’t the world’s best actress but surely she can do better than this.

Athrawes Thu 18-Jul-24 10:29:10

I just couldn't get into it - partly because the sound seemed muffled and much of the sets [in my view] were murky. Also I thought Jenna Colman looked too young for the part. Disappointing.

Poppyred Thu 18-Jul-24 10:45:57

Yes, disappointing in the end, and the sound was very poor.

Iam64 Thu 18-Jul-24 12:07:34

Agree with Athrawes the sets were often murky. I kept wondering if my tv was needing a reset.
Jenna Coleman was playing a 34 year old so looked the part. Her small stature, loose long hair and alternative clothes were attractive but - no police detective in RL looks like that. Unless they’re under cover in drug world
