Who watched this last night on Channel 5?

Second part tonight.

Must admit my eyes closed the last 20 minutes or so, will have to re-watch that bit.

Wish it had been 8.00-9.30 instead of 9.00-10.30.

Thought it seemed reasonably ‘balanced’.

Oh good grief, this article has Meghan's speech in full, and what a load of meaningless twaddle. How can anyone take so long to say absolutely nothing. I'm not suggesting anyone reads it all, just skim through to get the idea.

Catherine Princess of Wales always has a lovely smile. I think Megan has a lovely natural smile. H and M would have been a breath of fresh air to the Royal family , Harry was ill advised to write his book, appear with Oprah and agree to Netflix programme. Too late now.

I know it sounds like a cliché and I suppose it is, but he was such a happy young bloke when he was young and single. Everyone seemed to like him and he wasn’t such a whinger. If only we could go back in time.

I am not sure. press coverage of their visit to Columbia has been limited and either bemused or critical.

Wher will they go next North Korea? Russia? (to try and bring peace)? Libya?

Reporters have not been allowed near them. They’ve had their own filming and reporting under their control. So much for their attempts to be so ‘down with the people’.

Sparklefizz Mon 19-Aug-24 07:52:47

Film coverage of their trip will all be on Netflix. Sigh.

Ah, that explains the rictus smile and eyes wide open; editorial control. No natural expressions; Meghan 'mega-watt radiant' at all times, vacuous Harry looking increasingly uncomfortable.

That will explain why what has been in the papers has been limited, bemused or critical.

Seems counterproductive to me as no reputable news source is going to just use carefully edited material issued by the Sussexes. They will want to garner their own material - and if they cannot get it, they will just ignore them or be critical.

You chaps really do hate these two people who you have never met!

No, we don’t ‘hate’ them and they’re in the public eye enough so we don’t have to have met them. We dislike what they’re doing on the back of Harry’s royal position. We are still indirectly financing them and they continue to do immeasurable harm to their families.

We cancelled Netflix when they paid H&M for the scandal story.

nanna8 Mon 19-Aug-24 10:12:47

We’ve cancelled, too and so have a couple of our close friends. Mainly because there is nothing worth watching anymore though. Plus it costs more than it used to.

And their families have done no harm to them?! .........

Luckygirl3 Mon 19-Aug-24 11:01:02

This is a young man who was born into one life (not his choice) and chose another because it had made him unhappy. I have no problem with this.

There is now a rift with his family because he would not toe the line. Sad, but not uncommon.

The problem is that people had unrealistic expectations of him and his wife and raised them to fairytale prince and princess status, so when he turned out to be just a normal young man they felt cheated - that is not his fault.

He is forever saddled with the prince/duke label so he has no choice but to use that to forge a future career - it is going to follow him around whatever he does and he will not be able to get an ordinary job. He has used his titles to do some good - Invictus Games etc. - well done him. Not using the titles is not an option - it is tattooed on his every cell whether he likes it or not.

The press have treated him and Meghan atrociously and he is right to be angry about that. But whatever he does they will hound him.

He chose to leave what we all know is a very dysfunctional family - people do this all the time - it is a sane thing to do.

Smileless2012 Mon 19-Aug-24 11:04:26

There is a rift in the family Luckygirl because he's taken every opportunity to publicly slag his family off, and not because he wouldn't toe the line.

Luckygirl3 Mon 19-Aug-24 11:17:36

He has defended his position in the face of a multitude of press reporting and misreporting painting him in a very poor light, and the rest of his family as saints. He is entitled to state his position and set the record straight as he sees it. Of course he will defend himself - what else can he do? Slink away while the press pile shit on him? I do not imagine that the dysfunctionality of this family results in them behaving well towards anyone who dares to disagree with them.

Why do we believe one side of the family and disbelieve Harry? What evidence do we have either way?

Two things I have learned in my 75 years: there are always 2 sides to a story; and the press can be evil and are not to be trusted.

MissInterpreted Mon 19-Aug-24 11:20:06

Oh Luckygirl3, don't you know you're not sticking to the GN script here? Harry & Meghan = bad. The rest of the Royal Family = can do no wrong! gringringrin

Luckygirl3 Mon 19-Aug-24 12:30:54

Oops! Oh dear! I have not read the script! I prefer to use my brain!!! grin

NotSpaghetti Mon 19-Aug-24 12:35:25

If I wanted "out" from my family, I would not want to keep titles "prince" or "duke".
I would (politely) ask if they could be removed.

What I don't understand is why they have continued to use them.

I find this confusing.

lemsip Mon 19-Aug-24 12:36:58

Harry has been sidelined by meghan who is now where she always wanted to be!

Luckygirl3 Mon 19-Aug-24 12:40:33

How do you know where she wanted to be? What is it you think she wanted? In what way is Harry sidelined?

They must get so very tired of people spouting assumptions like this. No wonder they are pissed off!

merlotgran Mon 19-Aug-24 12:54:57

I wonder if Meghan would have wanted to marry Harry if he hadn’t been saddled with the Prince/duke label? 🤔

Luckygirl3 Mon 19-Aug-24 12:55:47

Well who knows? - you don't and neither do I.

eazybee Mon 19-Aug-24 12:58:38

H &M produce books, interviews and speeches to tell people where they want to be.
People read, listen and observe, then use their brain to make their own judgements, based on the information they have received.

Having read 'Spare'. (I picked it up in a charity shop, not my usual choice) I disagree about his being happy when still young and single. He probably was popular but it comes across that he was also deeply traumatised by Diana's early death and extremely unhappy.

I know it is said that Megan encouraged him to dwell on past and present slights and to whinge about them but he seems to be in love with Megan and blind to her faults, which means he is probably happier than he was before he met her. What they seem to have in common is that they both seem to enjoy self-righteous whinging.

RosiesMaw2 Mon 19-Aug-24 13:07:17

What I saw last night was so bland the term “vanilla” might have been coined for it.
I don’t understand though why some of the damning assertions H&M have made have not been publicly called out or at least challenged.
The “wedding” ceremony in Lambeth Palace gardens; the withholding of HRH status for Archie on account of his mixed race are two obvious examples.
The “I didn’t want to be alive” quivering lip which fooled nobody, the no access to counselling , the withheld passport (but she flew to New York to watch Serena Willians play tennis) taking her driving licence away (chauffeurs were available) etc etc etc even “The RF made me wear beige clothing” - what?
Last night told me nothing new and even those commenting seemed to be hedging their bets.
Disappointing.
