Thank goodness a new series of Grace is back on ITV on Sunday evenings at 8pm. Peter James writes excellent thrillers and they are every bit as good on TV.
Like Vera, they are a complete story in one episode so I don't have to try to remember a complicated plot until the next episode a week later.
One of the best TV detective dramas.

I’ve read all the books.

No, John Simm isn’t ‘Grace’, neither is the actress playing his partner ‘Clio’.

But it’s a pleasant ‘ish’ way to spend two hours on a Sunday evening.

I forgot Sherwood was on at the same time, a much grittier watch.

We found Sherwood much more gripping.

NanKate, I have to agree, her ears are very off putting. She definitely needs to grow it and change the style.

I've read the books and think all the main characters are miscast, John Simm is closer to Roy Grace or my idea of him, but not perfect by any means. The actor who plays Norman Potting from my memory is almost his polar opposite. That's the problem in the disconnect with the book and the drama, the characters don't always tally with what's in your mind's eye.

I’m enjoying it especially as my DS lives near Brighton so I recognise many of the places.

Now I’ll get a lot of flak for this. I wish the police woman with the short hair would grow it to cover her ears. 👂👂

She didn’t look like this in the books either!

Totally agree with you about John Simm as Grace. I love him in other things ( eg Life on Mars) but Ive read the books and he doesn’t look like how Grace is described and also doesn’t act like Grace is described as being in the books .
Watched one episode of series 1 and was so disappointed that I haven’t watched any since . Maybe I should give it another chance?

I like psychological thrillers, especially Scandi ones, but I find the Grace books are really extreme in their violence.. I no longer read them and if I watch the films it's to see if I recognise the locations really..

Has anyone seen or read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ? Is it worth reading/watching ?

I've just started watching Grace but itvx in their infinite wisdom have decided not to put series 1 episodes 2 & 3 out there for watching 🤷🏻‍♀️ good job there stand alone episodes

Shock horror! Laura Elphinstone is clearly happy in her own skin. Good for her when she works in an industry heavily influenced by looks and cosmetic procedures. Nasty remarks are best left unsaid.

Completely agree with you. John Simm is excellent as Roy Grace and just as I imagine him when reading the Roy Grace books by Peter James. I’ve read all the Roy Grace books and enjoyed every one of them. There’s just one book where the killer gets away. I hope he resurfaces at some point

Sarnia I didn’t mean to be nasty, just a statement of fact imo.

Well said Sarnia !

I preferred the Scandi version. There is also another version with Daniel Craig. As for the books, I found them a bit strange.

I apologise to anyone I have upset. I should have kept my thoughts to myself.

I enjoyed all the Grace series but not read the books….i wonder if it’s worth reading them now I’ve watched the series as the characters are stuck in my head now?

If you read the books now, it will be ok as you will just see John Simm as Grace, plus all the others as on the tv.

You will have no ideas of your own what they should look like.

Plus the books give much more detail to the crimes, not skipped through in two hours.

Shirleyw Sat 07-Sept-24 14:37:38

Thanks calendargirl, i think ‘grace’ will be next books I read…

I have watched all Series 4 now on ITVX. Thankfully we get closure on the Sandy storyline.

pascal30 Sun 08-Sept-24 10:37:51

If you've read the books Sarnia you'll know that that story is just beginning with the difficulties encountered by taking on the son... no doubt all for the next series
