Thank goodness a new series of Grace is back on ITV on Sunday evenings at 8pm. Peter James writes excellent thrillers and they are every bit as good on TV.
Like Vera, they are a complete story in one episode so I don't have to try to remember a complicated plot until the next episode a week later.
One of the best TV detective dramas.

If you've read the books Sarnia you'll know that that story is just beginning with the difficulties encountered by taking on the son... no doubt all for the next series

I have read several Peter James books but I am not up to speed with the latest ones. I did wonder what would happen with the son. I look forward to them!

For anyone curious as to what happened to Sandy, Grace's presumed dead wife, it's all in Peter James recent book' "They Thought I Was Dead" Although he kept the sequences of shadowy Sandy appearing at the margins of his new life for quite a while throughout the series, I think this one could be read as a stand alone.

Calendargirl Mon 09-Sept-24 10:38:36

Always found the Sandy storyline rather boring after a while in the books, to me it distracted from all the policing.

I quite enjoyed the Sandy story line Calendargirl brought a bit of human interest to the books. I haven't bought They thought I was Dead yet as it's still a bit expensive, hopefully the price will come down soon.

Series like Grace and Rebus are too graphic and gorey, just for the sake of being sensational, seeing this sort of violence normalizes it.
Society is becoming increasingly violent, these programs do nothing to reduce that.

Calendargirl Mon 09-Sept-24 13:24:41

I borrow them all from the library sodapop.

Despite being criticised by someone on GN for doing so, who said that is an insult to authors, and I should be buying them.

🤷‍♀️

No matter, will still frequent the library!

TerriBull Mon 09-Sept-24 14:27:12

Yes borrow it from the library, you'll probably only want to read it once I imagine.

I live in France so no chance of a library book. However I do help to run a small English Library so perhaps I should get a copy for our library. We usually rely on donations.

You ought to write to Peter James sodapop and ask him to donate a copy to your library.

He might get a lot more readers.

I read one of the Grace books because they are set in Brighton and I lived there for a long time. I found it too violent, not particularly gripping or well written and some of the names of the roads were wrong. I don't mind reading trash as long as it is enjoyable.

I have not bothered with the TV series but I saw Grace as being more like Ross Kemp than John Sim.

I love this series and it keeps you wondering what will happen next. Brilliant.

Agree with calendar girl that the missing wife was a distraction in the books. Didn’t really add anything to the storyline and then things got even worse and more far fetched with the son.

sodapop Wed 11-Sept-24 14:30:32

Good idea Calendargirl I'll give it a try.

You could probably send a letter to him via the Police station on John Street Brighton BN2 0LA.. they should be able to pass it on...

Not read the books but I do find John Simms very wooden. He is as wooden as Charlie who used to be in Casualty.

I was talking to my sister yesterday, who hasn’t read the books. I said JS wasn’t my idea of Roy Grace, and she said which actor would you choose?

I didn’t know who I would pick.

Any ideas?

Nannylovesshopping Thu 12-Sept-24 09:31:46

Have read, They thought I was dead, boring, I was quite disappointed.

Ilovedogs22 Thu 12-Sept-24 11:30:38

I have been reading the Inspector Grace books for a while, brilliant but not for the faint hearted! The TV series on the BBC player however is rather lack lustre compared to the fab books. Also the actor playing Inspector Grace is not as one would imagine or want him to be, Alas confused

Ilovedogs22 Thu 12-Sept-24 11:35:59

Couldn't agree more. Not my idea of Inspector Grace either, he needs to be more dynamic, charismatic & also taller. confused

I have read all the Roy Grace books and enjoyed every one. I watched a couple of episodes on TV but didn’t enjoy them because the cast just don’t gel with the characters in the books.

Quokka

Boring.

I agree, we got to the end of Grace last night and don't feel it's very well written, some loose ends were left flapping and then tied up in 15 seconds near the end of the series without much explanation.
The actor playing Norman Potting was better than most of the others, but some scenes verged on comedy rather than drama. A few characters got little more than a mention so why have them there? Scenes like the burning doll in the pram didn't seem to add to the plot.
Also we found the episodes rather long, if they cut out some of the extraneous, waffley, red-herring storylines the whole thing would be easier to follow and much shorter.

David49 Sun 15-Sept-24 14:15:29

I’ve got a rule, if I’ve read the book I don’t bother watching the film, I’ve already got images of the story and the film will be quite different with added and missed parts

I thought the girl who had been abducted, then imprisoned in a container, plus being an asthmatic, did really well when she finally managed to escape.

Despite being enclosed for I assume days, she was able to climb out and run off fairly easily, not suffering from cramped legs or anything.

And no signs of having no opportunity to use a loo- her clothes looked quite clean and dry.

And would anyone have survived that roof fall?

GrannyGravy13 Mon 16-Sept-24 07:17:09

I stopped watching after 15 minutes, as an asthmatic with phobias of small places, the dark and being restrained it was not for me.
