Starring Anna Maxwell Martin and Shaun Evans.

Based on a true story. 4 parter.

So far, so good.

I think Endeavour did the original Morse series proud.

Calendargirl Wed 06-Nov-24 14:59:32

Farzanah

I didn’t watch Endeavour. Was too fond of the original Morse series.

Please watch it.

You don’t know what you’ve missed.

The scriptwriters cleverly introduced characters and events that set the tone for the ‘Morse’ series.

It was sympathetically done.

He played a squeaky clean, quietly spoken and innocent looking young detective and has now taken on the role of the exact opposite. A scruffy loner who is a drifter and attacks and kills women.

Farzanah Wed 06-Nov-24 16:06:32

Thanks I might just take a look if it’s still available.

Ilovedogs22 Wed 06-Nov-24 20:38:19

Yes, yes Farzanah, couldn't have put it better myself.
The new Morse just doesn't cut the mustard, I'm afraid!
John Thaw fitted the bill perfectly, solid, steadfast, surly and sexy.
Shaun Hughes is too weedy and lacks both charisma and the strong
manly, incorruptible essence of Mr Thaw. 🤔

Calendargirl Wed 06-Nov-24 20:48:58

He wasn’t the new Morse Ilovedogs

He was the younger, callow, unjaundiced version.

Still highly intelligent, still a lover of opera, and still an eye for an attractive girl.

Primrose53 Wed 06-Nov-24 22:37:10

Anna MM should get an award for her acting in this.

If you’re going to criticise the actor and his character you could at least get his name right.

Oh no!

I loved Shaun Evans as Endeavour and don't think I could bear to watch him in a role like that.

MissAdventure Wed 06-Nov-24 23:04:12

I'm intrigued now, and wish I'd watched it.

BlueBelle Wed 06-Nov-24 23:34:30

It was brilliantly done and thoroughly watchable Delia was a very complex character and not very likeable most of the time strange how many men she seemed to attract
Poor David tried hard
There’s something on tomorrow is nt there ?

henetha Thu 07-Nov-24 00:04:25

This was brilliant. Yes, a documentary about it tomorrow.

Calendargirl Thu 07-Nov-24 06:53:15

I collected the book on which it is based from the library yesterday. About 100 pages in, but of course I know the outcome.

So far, she seems much more ‘normal’ than portrayed on tv, even before all that happened to her.

She was with him a long time, longer than the tv version suggests really.

Bridie22 Thu 07-Nov-24 07:25:04

Delia tells her own true story tonight in a documentary, she is one brave lady.

Lollin Thu 07-Nov-24 08:12:05

Absolutely a brave lady Bridie22 I don’t usually watch this type of production but it drew my attention because it seems it was taken from Delia Balmer’s own book. However, after what calendargirl has said I’m going to read her book now.
I was glad at the end the psychiatrist stated clearly about her anger. Before last night’s eposide I kept wanting to scream at the police to stop, look, give her a chance, especially when she would turn away. I wonder if the varied professions are really any better at understanding what a victim might be living through.
I didn’t know that there is a documentary tonight I will definitely watch such a brave woman.

TerriBull Thu 07-Nov-24 08:16:54

I'd got up to the part in episode 4 last night, where the police woman had come round to tell Delia that Sweeny had got 4 life sentences but the judge had recommended he would be considered for parole after 9 years shock What the heck is wrong with some of our judges ? Such a person would always be highly dangerous to women. I'll pick up tonight but that left me reeling shock

TerriBull Thu 07-Nov-24 08:25:38

4 life sentences in this country are meaningless anyway given they run concurrently.

traveller61 Thu 07-Nov-24 08:37:46

Seen this, so gripping & really shocking. Did like it, and tonight is the documentary about the real woman. So looking forward to seeing it

Me too, TerriBull. Nine years! shock

I think even then they mentioned that it might be earlier because of the time he’d spent in custody before the trial.

Quite!
And then to say he would be eligible for parole after nine years! Our criminal justice system has been broken for a long time.

Cossy Thu 07-Nov-24 11:06:07

Just watched final episode.

I actually liked both the Delia character and the actress who portrayed her!

Shaun Evans was very chilling as John Sweeney and the story was well portrayed and horrific!

merlotgran Thu 07-Nov-24 11:11:50

As soon as I saw who was playing David I thought he’d be a weirdo because he always plays a creepy baddie (apart from Downtown Abbey)

Glad I was wrong.

Charleygirl5 Thu 07-Nov-24 14:12:18

Allira* you will not recognise Shaun as John Sweeney. I found it chilling to watch and it is one of the best programmes I have ever seen. Please try to watch it, I know you will change your mind. The second episode was frightening and our police and justice system still needs an overhaul although some of the police force attitudes have improved there is room for improvement.

Thank you for the heads-up Calendargirl, sometimes I'm a bit of a twit, some people say I'm something similarly spelt too! 🤔

Yes sorry Merlotgran, I meant to say Shaun Evans!!!!!?!
I may be an idiot but I still don't think he's my idea of the erudite, intellectual, classy, sexy Morse.
Ps, just check me for anymore typos please.😄👍🌺
