Starring Anna Maxwell Martin and Shaun Evans.

Based on a true story. 4 parter.

So far, so good.

BlueBelle Thu 07-Nov-24 18:11:36

Be interesting to see how like the real person the actor has portrayed her

Allsorts Thu 07-Nov-24 19:34:42

I can’t get over the accent, then all the screaming and shouting that the victim did all the time was weird. She wasn't easy to like.

Primrose53 Thu 07-Nov-24 21:40:26

Watching the real Delia tonight and I think Anna MM portrayed her and her accent really well.

henetha Thu 07-Nov-24 23:34:27

Me too, Primrose

Calendargirl Fri 08-Nov-24 07:16:30

I watched the documentary.

No, I disagree about the accent. To me, AMM didn’t get it right somehow, Delia didn’t speak like that.

I felt the last half veered away from Delia, and seemed more like a real crime police drama.

The tv drama showed such a lot of her attack, and it seemed to be glossed over in the documentary.

Momac55 Fri 08-Nov-24 07:22:54

It’s the character type, if the character was from any other part of the country he would probably swear like that it just so happens that this fella was a Liverpudlian , bad people like him do swear. It’s based on a true story the programme makers didn’t make it up

BlueBelle Fri 08-Nov-24 09:20:38

I think the actress got the accent and the gestures spot on however the real person did not come across so spikey and harsh and downright strange as she did it the play It was almost a caricature of her

Farzanah Fri 08-Nov-24 09:24:55

I was very interested to see the documentary about the real Delia last night. Was the long suffering boyfriend she had after Sweeney real, they didn’t mention him at all?

I didn’t really get much indication of her personality except she was a very angry person, and her anger was directed seemingly more towards the police than Sweeney. Of course this was not in-depth and only a snap shot.

A shocking piece of info was that the police wonder if many more unsolved murders may have been carried out by him.

Watched the final bit last night when thankfully he was convicted whilst in jail of the murder of the American girlfriend after her body parts were identified in The Netherlands, and, got full life sentence, no tariffs. Why didn't he receive that in the first place?, after all he was convicted of the murder of Paula, the woman who called on him by chance whilst looking for someone else. Surely, after being found guilty of her murder and dismemberment, not to mention leaving Delia for dead, it would have been utterly batshit that he would have been recommended for parole after 9 years by the first judge, does it take being found guilty of two murders to realise his release would endanger women and specifically Delia. Some judges and their judgements appear completely insane and not very joined up.

I shall have to watch the documentary.

Smileless2012 Fri 08-Nov-24 17:20:29

The initial conviction was for the attack on Delia TerriBull; there wasn't sufficient evidence to charge him with anything else.

He was convicted of Paula's murder and Melissa's while serving the sentence for his attempted murder of Delia.

TerriBull Fri 08-Nov-24 17:24:06

Ok thanks for explaining Smileless, I still think the attack on Delia was so vicious, she was all but dead, he shouldn't have been considered for parole,

Primrose53 I too loved the acting in this drama. I was hooked straight away and binge watched it. It was scarey in places but i thought Delia, Sweeny and David portrayed the characters really well.Currently watching the real story.

I’ve just finished episode 4. I didn’t know the story before watching this dramatisation and haven’t watched the interview with the real Delia yet.
I found it one of the best dramas based on a true story that I’ve ever seen. Great cast and the two main characters were brilliantly portrayed. Anna M-W was so good playing a complex, not always sympathetic character. She showed ptsd as it is, those unpredictable outbursts of terrifying rage, underpinned by fear, terror of abandonment.

It also shows the reality of the difficulties facing the police investigating and successfully prosecuting violent offences against women

I have nearly finished the book. Strangely, ‘David’ is mentioned very briefly, he wasn’t the boyfriend, he was a chaplain who was supportive but died following an aneurysm. The actual boyfriend is a chap called ‘Steve’, who obviously was portrayed as ‘David’ in the programme.

No idea why they changed the names, as she wrote all about it in the book.

Iam64 Sat 09-Nov-24 08:22:20

It’s a tv drama, an adaptation of her book. It had the usual statement at the start of each episode, that some names and events had been changed

I thought it was excellent & it felt natural to me that some people are a bit odd and unlikeable, it felt right. I have a similar history, I was beaten up & buggered by my husband in 1976, the police were great, but I wasn't as feisty as Delia, but the police station had nowhere to put me, it was just cells and offices. I got through it and trained as a social worker in the end, it was useful to have had that experience but a horrible, terrifying thing to go through.

My heart goes out to you! You are one brave lady flowers thanks

Calendargirl Sat 09-Nov-24 10:19:09

Yes, I realise that, but still wonder why.

hmm

Iam64 Sat 09-Nov-24 11:09:26

spabbygirl, - you joined the tribe of wounded healers - thank you 💖
I’m sorry you were so badly abused

Farzanah Sat 09-Nov-24 11:22:30

How terrifying for you spabbygirl and I hope you had a lot of support, especially to train as a social worker afterwards, such a demanding but rewarding job.

I kept thinking as I was watching this dreadful story, how many other women are still suffering and if the police do, as they say, treat women with more empathy and belief than formally. I do hope so.

Farzanah Sat 09-Nov-24 11:24:59

Thanks for the info about ‘David’ Calendargirl. I will have to try and get hold of the book.

Thanks for the info about ‘David’ Calendargirl. I will have to try and get hold of the book.

Finished the book now. ‘Steve’ also died, from cancer of the oesophagus. They weren’t together anymore, she never forgave him for siding with the police, forcing her to give evidence in court.

Delia seemed, unsurprisingly, to be permanently damaged, physically, mentally, spiritually, by her toxic relationship with Sweeney.

Iam64 Sat 09-Nov-24 19:51:01

How could Delia ever fully recover? Impossible

Daddima Mon 11-Nov-24 13:34:01

I agree that Delia came over as very unlikeable, but I couldn’t believe the accent, as ‘David’ asked if it was Canadian after about six words, and she said most people thought she was American. I heard English, a wee bit Scottish and Irish, and also some Devon or Cornwall!
For me it was just okay.

BlueBelle

They believe he killed three or four other women in the time he was free !!! the police were not on the ball at all
How do you recover from that horrendous near death experience when he beat her close to death
Poor woman she ll live in fear and never get close to anyone again I would think

The Real Story ( name of program) is on Thursday 9 O/clock.

Thanks Petra. I started watching Until I Kill You but decided half way through episode two, that it was too late at night to scare myself that much. So I checked out this thread and watched the documentary ( which I didn’t know about) to find out what actually happened. I’ll finish watching the series tomorrow. In daylight!

I’m a fan of Anna MM. I think she’s a very talented actress. But then again I love Motherland, Line of Duty and Ludwig. And to be fair her characters in all three are very similar. She’s playing this part very well though, imho.

Don’t forget Bleak House, which is the first thing I ever saw her in. She was excellent in that. It surprised me when she started doing comedy as I only thought of her as a serious actress. I love Motherland.
