Remember When Saint Cliff Richard Dominated Christmas?

The number 1 slot in the charts was almost reserved for him. But he's vanished completely.

I did spot an article about him just a couple of months back and the accompanying photo was not flattering by any means. Age seems to have caught up with him, as it does with all of us.

Me too

He hasn't vanished completely. He still tours - and brings out a calendar (no, I've never bought one, I saw one in a shop last week!)

He only had the Christmas number one twice on his own, and once with The Shadows. Hardly dominating.
The Beetles and LadBaby have more.

He is doing two gigs at The Royal Albert Hall next year btw.

Was this started intentionally as a Cliff bashing thread?

Seems like it. Personally I could take him or leave him but DM loved him.

I think that dreadful (and as it turned out, unnecessary) investigation aged him by years. And even then he looks good for his age. I wasn't a fan of most of his music, it's not my sort of thing, but I have no reason to believe he's not a decent person.

I sat behind Cliff Richard on a plane from Portugal. He has property there and the airline crew said he flew frequently with them and he was a real gentleman. He sat quietly throughout the flight, just playing on his iPad and never demanding anything from the stewardess. At the end of the flight, he was more than happy to have a photograph with me and got his manager to take it.
He couldn't have been nicer and can't believe anyone would call him creepy. What a disgusting comment from someone who probably never met him

I agree.

mae13 what a horrible thread
Made worse by some posters.

Well, IMHO, ‘Miss You Nights’ is one of the most beautiful songs.

And his voice back then was gorgeous.

Smileless2012 Wed 04-Dec-24 17:53:44

And there was me thinking this is the season of goodwill to all men tchhmm.

Sarahr Wed 04-Dec-24 18:00:55

Cliff Richard is doing great for his age. Looking old, but keeping himself fit and healthy, just like many older people.

MissInterpreted Wed 04-Dec-24 18:13:43

Did he not make really harsh comments about Elvis in an interview fairly recently? Something about not wanting his photo taken with him because he was too fat?

Allira Wed 04-Dec-24 18:33:06

I'm beginning to wonder if Cliff is actually a member of the Royal Family, such is the vitriol on this thread.

Another Prince Harry (that's his real name btw)

You have twisted what he actually said and meant

Please enlighten me, as I'm not actually sure exactly what he said.

This thread horrifies me.
It started a million miles from “the spirit of Gransnet” with the snide comment about “Saint Cliff Richard”: and has gone on to cite damning, unsubstantiated and probably libellous accusations.
Is this really the best we can do?
Or is mud-slinging what we are all about?

Allira Wed 04-Dec-24 18:51:56

Well, I'm surprised it hasn't been deleted as potentially libellous.

I don’t know anything about this particular incident, but is it a a sign of the times that you can accuse someone of saying something negative
when you then admit that you don’t know what was said?

This thread does seem to be unpleasant; I do not understand the reason behind the attack on Cliff Richard. What is he supposed to have done to warrant this spite?

Nothing.

Just speculation because he's not happily married with 2.4 children.

I wonder why mae13 hasn’t returned to explain what her motive was for starting this thread?

Well, I've since googled it and unless I'm missing something, he is reported to have said he turned down having his photo taken with Elvis because he (Elvis) 'had put on a lot of weight'. How is that not negative?

Mollygo Wed 04-Dec-24 19:19:30

Is everything on Google true?

If you weren’t there, it’s hearsay.

And if Elvis had put on weight, maybe he wouldn’t have wanted to appear next to Cliff who hadn’t.

I wasn’t there, so I don’t know.

Reportedly he thought it was unfair to Elvis because he had put on weight. Cliff always stayed trim.

Let's face it, poor Elvis did become bloated due to prescription drugs and other factors. It was very sad. ☹

Cliff had a portrait painted of him and Elvis.

Hard to justify I should have thought.

Allira Wed 04-Dec-24 19:39:06

Cliff might not be a saint 😇 but he is a Christian and will try to forgive those who sin against him.
Or spread unfounded rumours.

NotAGran55 Wed 04-Dec-24 19:43:48

This thread is an all time low on GN in my opinion. Some unbelievable posts.
How would the posters feel if their beloved sons, husbands, partners were spoken about in such derogatory terms by people they have never met?

Ziplok Wed 04-Dec-24 19:59:23

It is indeed, very sad to read such unpleasant remarks about him. As I said upthread, his music isn’t really to my taste, but that doesn’t mean I think the poor man should be vilified.
Those accusations made about him in the past were proven to be false and it was, seemingly, yet another attempt at trial by media. He was justifiable in seeking recourse. So often, it seems, the media play judge, jury and executioner rather than leaving things to be dealt with the law.
