The main delight of BBC is NO ADVERTS, I tried to watch The Secret Garden yesterday on some Ch4 channel and I am sure the adverts lasted longer than the film. The Beeb for me always. I have radio4= on for most of the day and learn so much from that. Today it was on ‘Best Thing Since Sliced Bread about DNA kits, fascinating! I listen to BBC 4 extra at night as Inrarely sleep before 3 am. Those who never watch BBC really need to read the schedules, dramas like the latest Wolf Hall. Yes other channels provide good content but it is ridiculous to write of BBC it is cheap at the price for the pleasure it gives me.

I enjoyed Gavin & Stacey - very British humour and not too ‘woke’. (Apart from the unwanted strippergram!😂). Bryn, Smithy and Nessa are great characters. It’s put Barry Island on the map!
The Wallace & Gromit films are always excellent - the details in the filming are fantastic!
The BBC’s redeeming feature is its lack of adverts - they drive me round the bend. If I see another one for perfume or holidays I’ll scream!! 😱That’s one benefit of Freeview, where it’s possible to record and fast forward.🙄 As for news, I now tend to watch GB News rather than the BBC.
I don’t bother much with Netflix, Apple, etc., partly because of the cost, but also because I don’t like American TV. I do like Scottish progs though - especially Shetland.👍

I don’t think there could ever be a TV schedule which pleased everybody, we all have very different tastes, and can indulge them now there is such a choice available.

In a sense, it doesn’t matter if the offerings pleased you, or pleased me, what matters to the channel is pleasing as many people as possible - and with the highest viewing for 16 years the BBC did that. Well done them.

Hmm. Not sure about that. I mean there were over 50 million potential viewers who didn’t think those programmes were worth watching.

And maybe try to provide a little something for everyone rather than a feast for a minority?

I only watched two of them but then I had between 5 and 17 people to spend time with and feed over the week so for the rest it wasn't a question of if I thought they were worth watching but I was busy with family, when I only see some of my GC every couple of months I'm hardly going to disappear to watch TV.

I also watched the BBC News Channel every day as I tend to be up earlier than everyone else.

Grannybags Sun 29-Dec-24 14:45:52

I only watched Vengeance most Fowl from that list!

homefarm Sun 29-Dec-24 15:00:48

Vengeance most fowl was the only thing worth watching on that list. My licence money wasted once again.

MissAdventure Sun 29-Dec-24 15:05:02

Is this a competition of who watched the least???

Aveline Sun 29-Dec-24 15:09:47

I was so thoroughly sick of the hype around Gavin and Stacey that the actual show fell pretty short for me. The actors were on every possible form of media for ages beforehand. They've even got Nessa doing an episode of the Shipping Forecast.

Deepf Sun 29-Dec-24 15:29:45

Pointless post really. Only 1 on that list worth watching that was Gavin and Stacey,

polnan Sun 29-Dec-24 15:45:24

only one I watched was "the King"

Casdon Sun 29-Dec-24 15:54:18

I begin to wonder if people read the original post. It wasn’t about what Gransnetters liked or watched, it was about how popular the BBC output on Christmas Day was with the viewing public as a whole.

GoldenAge Sun 29-Dec-24 15:55:51

Dr Who, Wallace and Gromit, and Gavin and Stacey are what I consider to be 'cult' productions. You either love or hate them - fortunately I love all three, and all three are very different, so for me the BBC got it absolutely right on Christmas Day.

I’m assuming you mean your post yes, it was pointless 🤷‍♀️

Aveline Sun 29-Dec-24 16:14:16

If I never see her again it'll be too soon!
I used to enjoy G&S but BBC totally overdid it.

I've just re-read what I wrote in a previous post and don't think I made myself clear (although I know what I meant)

Casdon

I find it quite presumptuous that, just because you posted that the BBC had the highest live viewing figures for 16 years some posters think you, or anyone who might have enjoyed one or two of those programmes, watch nothing else on any other channel!

Streaming services you mean those you have to pay for Louella?

I meant - Casdon posted the Christtmas viewing figures for the Beeb out of interest but it doesn't mean she personally watched every programme or didn't watch anything on other channels.

Susieq62 Sun 29-Dec-24 16:34:46

Gavin and Stacey was superb
Wallace and Gromit mediocre
Outnumbered was dreadful
Watching the Split tonight so I hope that is up to its usual standard

It’s fine, I did understand your post as you meant it Allira. I didn’t imagine that many of us ploughed through all the programmes that didn’t appeal to us, I certainly didn’t.
It has surprised me that some posters didn’t get that the post was about the overall popularity of the BBC output of different types of programme throughout the day, not about what we liked ourselves.
Grammaretto made an interesting point about the output of the other channels not being very good, and I think that must be true. I can’t find any ratings below the top 10, but neither Coronation Street, nor Downton made the top 10, which is very surprising compared to previous years.

Allira Sun 29-Dec-24 17:11:32

The Beeb is confusing me, though, by putting Only Connect on every night, even tonight.

I keep thinking it must be Monday.

Allira Sun 29-Dec-24 17:14:14

We did watch Last Christmas last night (Amazon Prime) - schmaltzy but it still made me cry at one point.

BlueSapphire Sun 29-Dec-24 17:21:02

Only watched one out of that lot, and that was recorded - Call the Midwife.

Aveline Sun 29-Dec-24 17:32:32

Easily the best programme on the Beeb this Christmas was the 'Gone Fishing' Christmas special filmed in France. Just pure enjoyment.

I was totally convinced yesterday was Sunday but strangely I'm quite happy that today is also Sunday. I think that might be worrying!

Is this a competition of who watched the least???

I don't think so, I think it is about not spending the whole of Christmas watching TV for many of us so not watching all ten programmes doesn't mean there was something wrong with the ones we didn't watch. Well that certainly applies to me, now everyone has gone home I will probably binge on TV while I rest and recover.

MissAdventure Sun 29-Dec-24 18:21:38

It just seems all very competitive these days.
Christmas doesn't seem yo have bought much jollity with it.
