She was 96 and had a very long and productive life. I particularly liked her in the detective series, Hetty Wainwright.

How sad, she certainly was a fantastic actor, so believable in everything she did. I hope there’s a tribute programme to her on TV. RIP Dame Patricia.

She was an ACTRESS!!!

How rude, do you often express yourself in this offensive shouting manner?

The Guardian. Today

“Patricia Routledge, the stage and screen actor best known for starring as Hyacinth Bucket in the BBC sitcom Keeping Up Appearances and Henrietta “Hetty” Wainthropp in the television series Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, has died at the age of 96.”

It is quite acceptable to describe female acting professionals in this way.

You know, in all the time you’ve been on gransnet J52 I have never known you to be rude or unpleasant about anything or to anybody. So it says more about them than it does about you (sigh)….

Thank you for sharing Aveline.

Aveline - that is lovely.
Shopping girl - " with the hand painted periwinkles."

It's perfectly acceptable nowadays to say actor when referring to a female. Either actor or actress are used..

It may be, but to me, the preference for ‘actor’ implies that there’s something inferior about the female word for the role. It seems to me to be anti-feminist to insist on it.

Taking a step back, this discussion about actors/actresses is a very Hyacinth Bucket one, isn’t it, I can quite imagine her introducing it as a topic of conversation.

Casdon Fri 03-Oct-25 19:18:14

Obviously with Sheridan’s thoughts on the subject at the front of her mind..

Deedaa Fri 03-Oct-25 19:33:27

My mother loved Hyacinth and never realised how many of her characteristics she shared!

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 03-Oct-25 20:05:26

“Bucket residence, lady of the house speaking".
Aw.

Georgesgran Fri 03-Oct-25 20:36:30

We often joke that some houses must have a Mercedes and room for a pony!

Shame the continuity announcer on Ch5(?) has called her ‘Rutledge’ several times.

Usedtobeblonde Fri 03-Oct-25 21:00:52

Ah, the hand painted periwinkle’s, such a lot of pleasure to so many people, what a wonderful way to be remembered.
RIP Dame Patricia.

I watched the tribute episode tonight. You forget just how funny they were.

BBC iplayer have one of her episodes

Surprised they're not offering more as a tribute. Maybe they will in the next few days. Tributes flooding in for her everywhere.

Thank you Aveline for your post Aveline Fri 03-Oct-25 16:46:28

What a wonderful woman she was, so versatile, from Coronation Street to Shakespeare, Talking Heads, Hettty Wainwright and, of course, the inimitable Hyacinth Bucket!

We watched an episode on BBC this evening. Thank you for the memories.

RIP Dame Patricia Routledge.

Jennerdysphoria Fri 03-Oct-25 22:41:41

Could this be her best quote? "If there's one thing I can't stand it's snobbery and one-up-man-ship. Women who try to pretend they're superior. It makes it so much harder for those of us who really are!"

www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/czdjegvjz3do

Except I'm not sure of hearing 'one-up-man-ship' correctly in the clip, though it fits well enough.

Allira Fri 03-Oct-25 22:44:18

Oh yes!!
And the oft-quoted "It's my sister Violet, you remember — the one with the large house, sauna, and room for a pony" !

If I were a lady who was famous for being on the stage or in films (not ‘movies’), I would far rather be described as an ‘actress’ not an ‘actor’.

It just sounds so much more imposing and grand.

It's the female equivalent of actor, isn't it? Glad to see the BBC described her as an actress last night. Yay!

henetha Sat 04-Oct-25 10:36:28

One of my favourite actresses. I so loved her as Hyacinth Bucket. They showed an episode last night and it was wonderful to see it again.

Athrawes Sat 04-Oct-25 11:44:31

I too loved her as Hyacinth Bucket. She was an excellent actress and I especially liked her facial expressions - they really made me both cringe and laugh. She will be much missed.

She played a teacher in ‘To Sir With Love’ many years ago.

I didn’t realise she was in that film, or Corrie.

I’ve never watched Hetty Wainthropp but it popped up the other night when I was channel hopping and I found it really charming. Going to dip into a few more episodes. What was funny was that they were redecorating a room and getting rid of the ‘old fashioned’ G Plan furniture which is now highly sought after by lovers of mid century classic furniture!

Aveline Tue 14-Apr-26 17:02:06

'Hetty Wainthrop investigates' was on when my son was a wee boy. It always amused me when he and his friend Gordon went out to play at Hetty Wainthrop. I'm not sure which of them played the lady!

Anniebach Tue 14-Apr-26 17:26:05

RIP , thank you

That's interesting! I am watching it as an antedote to the appalling news.

Little things I notice like them waiting for the second post. How brown the decor was, lots of good actors and actresses and of course Dame Patricia with her wonderful face and voice.

Hetty Wainthrop was lovely gentle viewing. I often enjoy watching one now.
