Anybody see this last night?

I watched and although it was good to see something other than detective thrillers or reality programmes, I was rather disappointed.

I know some fantastic knitters and a couple of knitwear designers yet two tired looking elderly ladies were judges! Never heard of either of them and their comments were most odd.

The contestants seemed a nice crowd and clearly quite talented. Their first challenge was to knit a fair isle Tank Top in chunky yarn. Some really good designs and colour choices but a couple of people needed a bit longer to complete.

The second challenge was, as a group, to cover a sofa in knitting which should have the “wow factor”. Sadly that went down like a lead balloon. One group managed it but it was very dull. The other group’s effort was a disaster and looked an absolute mess. The two old dolls didn’t know what to say about that one. 🤣🤣

Tom Daley as presenter was OK but draped in an assortment of multi coloured knitted adornments and a white skirt or kilt looked bizarre but that was probably the aim.

There was a very nice young woman in a pale green top who won Top Knitter last night and I predict she will win the contest eventually. Very talented and very modest. 👍

That’s great to hear Primrose.
I was thinking people would be put off; so glad to be wrong.

Projects much more manageable in the time last night. The toddlers looked adorable in their fancy dress costumes. Judges again looked uncomfortable. Was the one with needles in her hair wearing knitted dungerees? How strange and impractical.

I think Simon may be gone next week. He doesn't seem to have the range of knitting stitches that some of the others have. Isaac was a revelation. After almost being cast off last week he was Knitter of the Week. Still not in love with this programme. It's like a car crash, you know you shouldn't look but can't resist a sneaky peek.

Ohmother Mon 24-Nov-25 11:31:52

As a none knitter. I’ve tried for years but even a scarf goes wrong🙄. This doesn’t inspire me at all. I watched the first episode and last night’s. Silly tasks and judges with no noticeable enthusiasm for the job in hand. It’s a no from me.

PaynesGrey Mon 24-Nov-25 11:44:28

Further to last Monday’s post. Even though the programme format is dull, the series does continue to grow on me - although I could do with some clear distinction between knitting and crocheting - which Daley tends to refer to as one craft.

Isaac did really well this week. A quiet young man growing in confidence. Ailsa is consistently good.

Right person cast off this week. Out of their depth. Their part in the group challenge threw the whole thing out of kilter. I bet Holger was quietly furious. He’d much rather work alone.

WARNING! I tried to find out the date of the final by googling, and AI told me the winner!

Retroladywriting Mon 24-Nov-25 16:22:15

I'm watching it now. What on earth is that judge with the knitting needles in her hair wearing????

Primrose53 Sun 30-Nov-25 21:44:48

The contestants have come on in leaps and bounds! Especially Simon (?) who was very inexperienced. His plate of breakfast food was exceptional.

I do think this should be taken into account because Holger is always winning and getting great comments from the judges but he is a designer after all, so in my opinion has a headstart.

Sarnia Thu 04-Dec-25 17:18:13

I did not agree with the judges decision this week in who should win the baaaadge.
I thought Simon deserved it. They were very impressed with his breakfast food, especially the bacon. Holger's was original but at the end of the day is was long strings of knitted noodles.
All the slouchy cardigans had faults but I thought Holger and Ailsa's cardigan which had one whole side attached upside down was not a worthy winner. Simon & Lydia's fault on their cardigan was minor by comparison.

alie2oxon Janie Crow and Tom Daley chat on Instagram @thegameofwool while she's wearing that gorgeous shawl. It was posted yesterday

Sarnia Mon 08-Dec-25 07:01:07

What on earth was Di Gilpin wearing on her head last night? I don't particularly mind the knitting needles but this looked like a line of washing. Very strange.
I was pleased Lydia won the baaadge as best knitter despite her struggles with the lace knitting. It was time for Simon to go but I wouldn't blame him if he feels disgruntles about last week.
Just 4 left. Isaac is a dark horse with his lace panel easily beating both Ailsa and Holger.

Some of the comments made about Isaac’s necklace were rather nasty. I thought it was very pretty.

So did I! It would look lovely in the summer.

Simon got a great dig in at Holger. Sorry to see him go actually because for a beginner he did really well.

Wasn’t Lydia’s necklace stunning?

That judge’s hair “adornment” was just awful and looked like she got tangled up in her washing line.

Nandalot Mon 08-Dec-25 08:51:53

I was sorry to see Simon go. He brings a bit of humour and seems a kind man - look how he tried to calm down Lydia. I noticed Tom Daley was nowhere to be seen at this point although often the celebrity presenters do comfort those who are in a state.
I thought the judges were harsh about his necklace too and seemed to have missed the point about the design.

Suzieque66 Mon 08-Dec-25 08:59:54

What on earth are those ridiculous women doing on this programme ? Last night one of them had knitting with needles stuck in her head / hair ? .... and one of them sobs when she sees perfect knitting ?

They are a ridiculous pair for a knitting show ...

J52 Mon 08-Dec-25 09:14:04

I think this programme is becoming a parody of itself. It appears to me that the judges are unpleasantly harsh in order to justify their own superior talents. I’m sure there’s a name for this type of personality.
It would be better if the criticism showed how to put the mistakes right. Perhaps the judges could produce examples of perfection.

Millie22 Mon 08-Dec-25 10:45:45

Just when you think it can't get any more ridiculous and it does.

The woman with the knitted washing line hair looks a mess.

Nobody should be crying over a lampshade.

Keith Brymer-Jones cries over pottery. It shows a inner passion which can't be all bad. The judges are very well regarded in the world of wool.
I will be surprised if a second series is made unless there are some drastic changes.

Agreed.
Such a shame, this could have been so much better.

I don't like how the two women wander round, looking at what the contestants are attempting todo then undermine them and give them doubts. Not kind.
Especially when one of them needs a bit of guidance on hairstyles.

Perhaps the judges could produce examples of perfection.
Looking at what they wear themselves, I think not.

The judges on this programme do wear some weird outfits but then other judges on similar programmes do too. Esme Young on Great British Sewing Bee often wears unusual clothes and necklaces, Prue Leith on Bake-Off is a kaleidoscope with her outfits and jewellery. On the same programme, Noel Feilding loves his wacky jumpers. Maybe those in the arty, crafty world like to dress this way to make a statement, perhaps.

The Knit and natter groups I attend, all heartily dislike this show. A great opportunity missed. Should have been recruiting people to knitting, but this show will actually put of any who may be considering. How can it be 'Knitter of the Year', when so much of it has been crochet?? These are two different crafts.

Why are the judges so old? And why cannot they sort out their hair do's a little better - and as for the knitting needles in the hair........words fail me.

Would have so loved to see good quality knitting with appropriate yarns and needle sizes. At a recent xmas craft fayre, we had a wonderful knitted nativity scene, 3 kings, shepherds, Mum & Dad, baby in cradle, sheep. Absolutely gorgeous, laid it caught everyone's eye. All made by a lady who had spent the last year fighting cancer, unable to go out much, she passed her time with making things like this. We raffled it, and the winner then donated it to a local Care Home, where it will be in place of honour in their lounge. That is the sort of knitting we should have been seeing on this programme.

DamaskRose Sat 13-Dec-25 15:44:31

The judges may be well respected in knitting circles but they are hopeless judges. Their criticisms are too subjective. Holger’s necklace could never have been worn comfortably. If there is another series there need to be new, younger, more vibrant judges. Glad Lydia got the baaadge but Simon should have got it last week.

MollyNew Sat 13-Dec-25 19:31:49

They will have to make some changes to this show if there's a second series. I thought it would be the yarn version of Sewing Bee but it hasn't been very inspiring. I actually liked Tom as presenter but some of the tasks were silly and the judges might know their stuff but they don't communicate that to the viewers.

Primrose53 Sun 14-Dec-25 21:43:42

The knitters have come on so much. Sorry to see Isaac leave. Holger’s bag was really good but in the challenge where he was paired with Lydia he took over as usual but pleased to see she stood her ground. Shame that Ailsa seems to have gone off the boil now because she started really well.

The judges however just look awful especially as they are knitwear designers. The black piece of knitting draped around one of them was ugly. The other judge looks like she never washes or brushes her hair, just scoops it up and sticks something daft in it! Her knitwear was nothing special either and her trousers were all crumpled up and looked a mess.
