Afternoon all,

Please keep a few things crossed for me tomorrow, around about 10.30 would be good!

Thank you! smile

JessM Thu 13-Feb-14 17:47:34

Great. You obviously wowed them.

Anne58 Thu 13-Feb-14 17:49:09

Either that or it was the novelty value Jess grin

shysal Thu 13-Feb-14 18:01:16

Well done Phoenix, fingers crossed for the next stage.

yogagran Thu 13-Feb-14 18:24:15

That's brilliant news, well done phoenix, I'm really chuffed for you

Anne58 Thu 13-Feb-14 18:25:34

Thanks!

grannyactivist Thu 13-Feb-14 18:34:01

Okay - not such a slacker then phoenix. grin
Staff discount and no ironing hmm - sounds good to me. Go girl!!!!

Nelliemoser Thu 13-Feb-14 19:22:40

phoenix I will keep everything crossed for you for next week.

Anne58 Thu 13-Feb-14 23:25:32

Many thanks to you all!

But please be careful with regard to what you cross, when you cross and where you cross! (I would hate to be sued for accidents/incidents, and under those sort of circumstances the case for the defence could involve hard evidence, and at that the mind boggles!)

Re an excuse to go to the interview next Tuesday. You could say that you had received a phone call at home tomorrow (Saturday) but tell them on Monday, that you have been invited for an interview. This is the first (conveniently forgetting about Tuesday's interview) and it is so long ago since you applied for the job that you had given up hope, hence starting your present one. Under normal circumstances you would never do anything like this and how apologetic you are!

That is the closest fib to the truth that I can think of!!!

If it's not my turn for the Tena Lady phoenix I have to keep my legs crossed all the time grin

Good luck Phoenix with the second interview. When my SiL was younger, he went for an interview, and after completing all written parts, and the chat part, was then keenly asked 3 questions 1] If he had to be an animal what would he be? 2]Where would he sit in an empty cinema? and 3]what drink would he choose at a Christmas party?
After a quick think he answered honestly [yes I know! honestly, doh!] he would be a cat [he likes cats] he would sit in the middle of the cinema, and he would have a beer.He didn't get the job.Of course there were probably better candidates, but does knowing how to answer these sort of questions mean that you should be preferred? It's not honest, but I guess shows you are interview savvy.

rosesarered Sat 15-Feb-14 20:26:46

BTW there is no 'right' answer to the questions but saying 1] a wolf - as they are fast, pack animals used to working as a team, say and 2] sitting at the front in the cinema-leading the way 3] A glass of wine, then moving on to soft drinks-to keep the head clear, may be preferred answers.grin

Charleygirl Sun 16-Feb-14 13:09:28

rosesarered these are good answers, it is being quick thinking enough to spout them out. I certainly could not now as the brain has slowed somewhat but perhaps when younger I could.

Anyway, good luck on Tuesday phoenix, check your diary for the date and time.

Anne58 Sun 16-Feb-14 13:20:10

Erm, I actually jotted it down on the back of an envelope.............blush

bikergran Sun 16-Feb-14 13:26:55

good luck phoenix smile

annodomini Sun 16-Feb-14 13:35:37

Go and get that envelope out of the bin, then, phoenix! Record it on your phone, your laptop, tie a knot in your hanky, Digby's tail, whatever... Go and knock 'em dead, but not too dead. wink

I'm new to this discussion and would like to ask for opinions on the job market. I am 67 and was made redundant in December after 21 years in the same job. I have registered with six agencies and haven't even had one interview. All I want is a nice busy admin job but there doesn't seem to be anything available. I can provide excellent references but is the problem my age? I am presentable friendly and hard working so why am I getting nowhere? I really could do with some advice please because I'm fed up being at home. Thanks.

Charleygirl Sun 16-Feb-14 15:17:53

I think a lot depends on what part of the country you live.

There's a dearth of jobs where phoenix lives.

Unfortunately age does seem to rear its ugly head.

Ana Sun 16-Feb-14 15:26:33

Rather an unfortunate turn of phrase there, Charleygirl! grin

supernanauna1 Sun 16-Feb-14 22:53:03

I am inclined to wonder if the agencies aren't bothering because of my age. When my job ended I thought I'd find another job easily enough - I never had a problem in the past but maybe there just aren't so many jobs out there now.

I have caught up on the housework, read loads of books and now I'm bored silly!!!

shysal Mon 17-Feb-14 08:16:10

Hope you find something soon super. sunshine Am I right in thinking that some employers don't keep staff beyond the age of 70, or was that before the changes in state pension age?

JessM Mon 17-Feb-14 08:47:59

Agencies are hard work super but they are in my experience not particularly agist when it comes to either temp work or short term contracts. For permanent roles it is just possible if they have a client that has a very young workforce (you know the ones - we all like to bond by going out drinking together workplaces) they may not put forward older candidates.
They want to put someone in who will reflect well on the agency - so older people often a better bet than young ones. They also take a bit of managing - my best advice is to make yourself available for temp work at short notice (clothes all ironed and mobile on).
Then ring them all every Monday, all bright and breezy (like they are) and say you are "still available" if anything comes in this week. Otherwise they just forget about you. Also keep an eye on their websites to see what they are advertising.
If you do a few bits of temping for them they will then tend to put you forward for more substantial short term contracts or "temp to perm" which is how a lot of recruitment is done these days. Lots of people get offered permanent positions from temping, even if it is not officially "temp to perm".

shysal Mon 17-Feb-14 15:06:38

I wish you the best of luck for tomorrow, Phoenix. sunshine

Soutra Mon 17-Feb-14 15:10:36

super have you thought about volunteering? Or is an income necessary? It might relieve the boredom, introduce you to new friends and hopefully look good on the CV.
