Gran's visits - what to do?
If, like us, you still haven't padded out your summer footwear collection, fear not - there are sandals to suit every style, every need and every age. So what's out there to tickle your toes and flaunt on the beaches this year? Whether you're looking for something comfortable, fashionable, lightweight or supportive, here's our pick of the best summer sandals.
Want to look stylish but be comfortable at the same time? Look no further than the classic wedge. Fashionable, supportive and a great way to make you feel like you're wearing heels (without the fear of breaking an ankle), team this summer sandal with a flowing dress, tunic and knee length leggings or even your favourite pair of jeans.
Try a cork wedge heel from Clarks for a super comfy fit, ultra-soft lining and a cushioned sole. They also have a good range of wide fit sandals so you're bound to find a pair that fit like a glove. A pretty espadrille may also do the trick this year - ideal with a maxi dress or a skirt on a beautiful day. A quality pair will also have a good bit of grip on the outsole.
"Last year I bought a pair of red suede wedges with a gold leather lining, which caused my little granddaughter to go 'Ooooh Nanny!' when she saw them."
If you're heading to sunnier climes this year and are in need of a comfy pair of shoes to see you through, especially if a lot of sightseeing is involved, a tourist or sports sandal will serve you well. Be sure to find a pair that have a good insole to offer maximum support and a Velcro strap might be ideal if you have wider feet. And they also double up as perfect footwear for a flight!
"I have started wearing Hotter shoes and they are fantastic. They have a fraction more toe room as well as other nice features. They do some extremely sassy footwear."
"For holidays, I pull out the old faithful Clarks with Velcro fastening."
Not just for the beach, flip flops are a firm favourite for functionality and support...and are actually pretty useful all year round. While you can find extremely cheap flip flops from a variety of shops on the high street, it's often worth going for a pair that are a little more pricey to ensure they last longer than a couple of wears.
Skechers are a must-buy this year - the Go Walk range is a particular favourite among our gransnetters - and Crocs also do a great range of foam sandals with a built-in arch, which are lightweight and odour-resistant. Try Schuh for Skechers and John Lewis for Crocs.
"I wear Skechers Go Walk range at all times of the year. They are very light, but supportive and comfy."
What's better than a sandal that fits your foot down to a tee? Especially suitable for women who suffer from arthritis or need extra supportive footwear, specially-designed ergonomic sandals are the perfect wardrobe addition this summer. They are, admittedly, a tad more pricey than your typical sandal, but quality over quantity any time we say!
Head to John Lewis for a gorgeous pair of FitFlop sandals, which are renowned for their ergonomic engineering. Vionic also feature Orthoheel Technology that provide natural alignment and elevated support. And let's not forget the ol' Birkenstocks made of 100% natural and renewable cork (sustainable comfort is always in fashion!). You'll find them over at Schuh.
"I've got four pairs of FitFlops and think they are the most comfortable sandal ever."
"Vionic is a sandal featuring Orthoheel Technology that helps keep your feet in alignment."
Another comfortable women's sandal? The one with the elasticated strap. And we don't mean the ugly kind either. Whether your feet are wide, narrow, small or long, elasticated sandals fit perfectly around any foot. They're especially useful as they won't slip off, even when there's an outburst of summer rain to contend with!
Rieker sandals are popular for their elasticated straps (you can find this brand on Amazon) and many older women also turn to M&S for their great range of evening elasticated sandals that are perfect for a wedding or fancy occasion. Their sparkle sandals in particular are ideal for adding a touch of pizazz to an evening outfit.
"I've got a pair of Rieker sandals with criss-cross elastic detailing. I have extremely narrow feet and these fit perfectly."
"I find Rieker shoes really squishy and comfortable - I could wear them day and night!"
