They've already MADE the decision to do it. Five pounds going to charity won't influence that decision. Or encourage anyone else to follow suit.

If an infection ensues, then they will get it treated whether five pounds was given to charity or not.

It's never going to encourage anybody to do it. So where's the harm?

I've been through breast cancer (so far so good) and the thought of doing something so abnormal to your body seems obscene to me

When I was but a child, I remember being horrified at some pictures I saw of Africans with what seemed to me to be saucers in their earlobes and similar face furniture. The habit of the Karen tribes in Thailand of stretching necks be adding more and more rings horrifies me as well. The Chinese practice of not allowing girl babies' feet to grow horrifies me. This idea is, to me, just another rather revolting body mutilation. I know not everyone will agree with that but that's how I feel about it. I never dared express this as a child because even though political correctness hadn't been invented then, I sensed it already. I knew I was supposed to 'respect' these other cultural traditions. Well, I didn't, and I still don't. So I don't think charities should encourage them. If that's my guts thinking rather than my head, so be it, but I don't think it is, I think it's my sense of beauty and elegance that is making me just think yuck!

Ariadne so true anyone who mutilates their body in this way has every chance of upsetting their bodies makeup and can cause changes in their breasts that would otherwise not happen,it only takes a small inbalance to start the cancer gene into being active so I would expect anyone with an ounce of sensability to refrain from doing such mutilation to their bodies,just give the £5.00 to the charlty and be done with.

Bags - the rings around the neck practice is horrible. Some young women who chose to have them removed found their necks couldn't support their heads, and they had to wear permanent neck-braces.
