Nipple piercing to raise money for breast care unit?

AIBU or just old fashioned to think this does not seem right. Yes it is a great way for a local tattoo and piercing business to get a bit of publicity in the paper - £5 for each piercing to local breast care unit appeal (male and female nipples, just before we start ranting)
I think the fundraiser should have declined this kind offer. Not only does it seem just wrong at a gut level.
But the NHS has to treat people who get infected piercings or who want tattoos removed.

Yes, me too. Yuk.

jinglo Fri 11-May-12 17:35:56

Why is it wrong with it FGS?! hmm

If they've made up their minds to have their nipples pierced, why shouldn't a fiver go to charity?

They've already MADE the decision to do it. Five pounds going to charity won't influence that decision. Or encourage anyone else to follow suit.

If an infection ensues, then they will get it treated whether five pounds was given to charity or not.

It's never going to encourage anybody to do it. So where's the harm?

hmm

It might seem wrong at a "gut level" but at a brain level, it's fine.

Oh for heavens sake!

With regard to piercing and tattoos generally, have you noticed that it always seems to those with the most unattractive bodies that seem to think them worthy of decoration?

Oxon70 Fri 11-May-12 18:06:44

Seems absolutely wrong to me to damage a breast to make money for care...

whitewave Fri 11-May-12 18:09:34

I've been through breast cancer (so far so good) and the thought of doing something so abnormal to your body seems obscene to me

soop Fri 11-May-12 18:14:24

jinglo Are you jingl that was? Just checking smile

Ariadne Fri 11-May-12 19:01:19

whitewave quite a few of us here! What my DH calls the sisterhood!

When I was but a child, I remember being horrified at some pictures I saw of Africans with what seemed to me to be saucers in their earlobes and similar face furniture. The habit of the Karen tribes in Thailand of stretching necks be adding more and more rings horrifies me as well. The Chinese practice of not allowing girl babies' feet to grow horrifies me. This idea is, to me, just another rather revolting body mutilation. I know not everyone will agree with that but that's how I feel about it. I never dared express this as a child because even though political correctness hadn't been invented then, I sensed it already. I knew I was supposed to 'respect' these other cultural traditions. Well, I didn't, and I still don't. So I don't think charities should encourage them. If that's my guts thinking rather than my head, so be it, but I don't think it is, I think it's my sense of beauty and elegance that is making me just think yuck!

Anne58 Fri 11-May-12 20:54:11

soop I think the answer to your question up there ^ is bound to be yes. At the risk of getting flamed, I personally think it's becoming somewhat tiresome. Ho hum.

Bags totally with you, should we also "respect" female genital mutilation, that is against the law in the UK, but still happens, or the girls are sent "home" to have it done? I rather think not!

glammanana Fri 11-May-12 21:46:02

Ariadne so true anyone who mutilates their body in this way has every chance of upsetting their bodies makeup and can cause changes in their breasts that would otherwise not happen,it only takes a small inbalance to start the cancer gene into being active so I would expect anyone with an ounce of sensability to refrain from doing such mutilation to their bodies, just give the £5.00 to the charlty and be done with.

Anagram Fri 11-May-12 22:03:56

phoenix - I agree with both your points.

Bags - the rings around the neck practice is horrible. Some young women who chose to have them removed found their necks couldn't support their heads, and they had to wear permanent neck-braces.

Anne58 Fri 11-May-12 22:14:00

Anagram love your subtlety, that is if I have understood correctly!

nanachrissy Fri 11-May-12 22:19:27

I completely agree Phoenix

Anagram Fri 11-May-12 22:22:38

You have, phoenix!

Anne58 Fri 11-May-12 22:23:56

nanachrissy thanks for that , but would you care to elaborate on which points? Anagram seems to have mentioned both points, but I'm now getting confuddled!

imjings Fri 11-May-12 22:26:32

Is there any reason why I shouldn't put my point of view on this thread? confused

It has got to be quite obvious to anyone who I am. I don't try to hide my 'identity'.

When you unsubscribe from GN there is a note which says "of course, you can always join again".

What actually am I doing to upset anyone? confused

imjings Fri 11-May-12 22:29:38

I repeat, I don't think these people giving five pounds to charity for each nipple piercing they carry out is ever going to encourae anyone to do it.

Why shouldn't a bit of good come out of idiocy?

Anne58 Fri 11-May-12 22:50:58

Jings, in whichever identity you choose to adopt, and they have been legion, goodness knows why, but that is your choice, you are of course free to put your point of view across.

You refer up there ^ in your post of 22.26 Quote " What actually am I doing to upset anyone?"

I don't think you are upsetting anyone, and that, I think is the problem, on this occasion!

imjings Fri 11-May-12 23:04:18

pardon???

Anything with 'jing' in it is likely to be me.

I'm desperately trying to get off this flipping website once and for all. So I unsubscribe every now and again. You cannot rejoin with the same name. I will try to keep away by not even reading it! smile

imjings Fri 11-May-12 23:05:03

And I'm bound to run out of 'jing' names soon. [hopeful]

Anagram Fri 11-May-12 23:13:19

But why do you keep doing it, jings?

You seem to leave when you've had a confrontation or disagreement with someone, or are pee'd off by the way a thread is going, then come back anyway - why go to all the trouble of unsubscribing and then rejoining?

Bags Sat 12-May-12 06:04:15

Just put a number after jing and you will never run out of jing options, jing739, or whatever it is. wink

absentgrana Sat 12-May-12 11:04:30

phoenix For heaven's sake – we don't want her name to be legion or we'd never know who she was. grin

jeni Sat 12-May-12 11:17:49

I thing somebody biblical was legion?confused
