Is a woman's place in the home?

On the Breakfast news this morning there was a report of the discussion surrounding women bishops. A report showed a member of the clergy carrying a placard saying 'A woman's place is in the home.' Personally I find this very offensive. Did they say to Mrs Thatcher she shouldn't be running the country as prime minister, but be at home cooking Denis's tea? Or the other women who are in positions of authority? How do you feel? Do you think women should hold positions of responsibility, or be in the home cooking and cleaning?

Burgundy what a prat, nothing more needs to be said!

Each to their own. I have no definite opinion on it either way. It depends on circumstances and the person involved.

Ditto what Alison said.

Although I could say a bit more!

Gosh and no sense of irony presumably. Or of stable doors having been left banging in the wind several decades ago.

'Dickhead!'

Actually I just saw that and thought like you at first, BurgundyGran. I think what it actually said was something about a woman's place is in the house of bishops (or wherever they live), so it was OK.

Mamie that wasn't the thing I saw it was material, one like the blue one on the right of the picture. It just said a woman's place is in the home. Not house. That is what got to me.

I have worked and raised a family and my husband and I shared the cooking, cleaning and shopping.

Even with the equal opportunity law we are still fighting the battle especially in the church, and the bishops want very much to keep women out. I suppose they feel threatened and secretly think women will do a better job!

wine cheers!

An old-fashioned organisation like the church is bound to carry on resisting having women as bishops. They are not representative of the whole country. Having seeing both men and women make a house homely, I would argue that perhaps more of these men should be spending some time at home so they could learn a few of the skills that we women have managed to acquire smile

jeni Fri 06-Jul-12 14:43:05

Or had forced on them

eGJ Fri 06-Jul-12 15:09:19

Problem is that although it is important to have women bishops, the first ones should be appointed because they are worthy of the role because of their experience and qualifications, not because they are women!

Greatnan Fri 06-Jul-12 15:55:10

Why would there not be any good candidates amongst the women vicars?

More to the point, why would any woman want to be part of an organisation that holds women in such contempt? The excuse that Jesus did not call women to be disciples is rubbish - there were plenty of women in the early church but their contribution has been deleted from church history by the men.

jeni Fri 06-Jul-12 15:57:31

Wasn't there one called Thekla who wandered around with that mysogomyst Paul?

DavidH22 Fri 06-Jul-12 16:07:32

Shows how far the Church - in fact almost all religions - is out of touch with the present day and how much they regard women as second class citizens.

eGJ Fri 06-Jul-12 16:11:39

Greatnan I'm not suggesting that there are no siutable women clergy candidates to be the first bishop; there a fair few. However being a woman shouldn't be the deciding factor if we believe in equality!

Greatnan Fri 06-Jul-12 16:19:05

I do believe in equality and I get very annoyed when I hear women saying the battle is won, when in most Third World countries the woman grow more than half the food, consume less than the men, and yet own very little of the crop.
When I think of the problems of rape, assault, forced marriage, genital mutilation, sexual slavery, poverty and lack of education I can't actually get very worked up about women not being able to take part in some superstitious rituals. Why don't they found their own church if it means that much to them?

eGJ Fri 06-Jul-12 16:20:59

No, the battle is far from won Greatnan women becoming bishops is only important to a group of guesswhat - ambitious women clergy!
