Getting your directoire gusset in a twist

I've been absent from the forum for a few months - family problems. On my return, I couldn't help but notice that the same refrain is going the rounds - people are being horrible to me or to others, people are pm ing, there are cliques and bullies, JO8 is now in her umpteenth incarnation - how boring it all is and how repetitive.

Just for the record, I've really enjoyed GN. When I asked for ideas on how to entertain my grandson cheaply, I was inundated with constructive suggestions. I love greatnan's jokes which have cheered up many a miserable morning. I am always amazed and in awe of how brainy and well informed some members such as Bags are. Jeni always has something sensible and interesting to say. I enjoy reading the views of people who hold very different opnions to me.

I suppose i just want to say - get over yourselves, some people. It's an internet chat forum. 15 years ago, no such beast existed, so make the most of it. It's wonderful that we can all exchange views. Isn't this something to be celebrated?

She's not joking.

kittylester Mon 11-Feb-13 21:14:03

My Mum is 89 = is that any good? grin

Riverwalk Mon 11-Feb-13 21:16:10

But she also has to be rich and sexy Kitty - messenger expects much!

Anne58 Mon 11-Feb-13 21:17:28

Please, please I beg of you, please do not define sexy in this instance.

kittylester Mon 11-Feb-13 21:20:00

Not convinced my Mum is either but it's in the eye of the beholder! grin

Anne58 Mon 11-Feb-13 21:22:11

That's what I'm hoping will be avoided kitty confused

Galen Mon 11-Feb-13 21:28:02

confused reminds of the Mikado. Something about being sufficiently decayed?

Ana Mon 11-Feb-13 21:42:53

Yikes! shock Surely that's a different prediliction entirely....

Galen Mon 11-Feb-13 21:48:01

No! Not what you're thinking , I thinkconfused it's the daughter in law elect and The Lord high executioners adviser!

Galen Mon 11-Feb-13 21:50:12

Ah. There is beauty in the bellow of the blast.
Koko and Katisha
Mikado!

annodomini Mon 11-Feb-13 22:03:28

There's a fascination frantic
In a ruin that's romantic.
Do you think you are sufficiently decayed?

Galen Mon 11-Feb-13 22:07:35

In regard to what you've mentioned
I have given my attention
And I think I'm suffiently decayed!
Oh
Sing along Derry etc!

annodomini Mon 11-Feb-13 22:50:15

Galen, should we have a G&S thread? moon

Nelliemoser Mon 11-Feb-13 23:38:15

Does anyone know why those now "hopefully" out of date garments were called "Directoire knickers"?

Ariadne Tue 12-Feb-13 06:03:32

anno and we could have a little list...

Bags Tue 12-Feb-13 06:07:55

Wasn't the whole style of Empire-line clothing (Jane Austen's time; females anyway) called Directoire? Or is it the 'era'.

absent Tue 12-Feb-13 07:36:17

Directoire style, mostly architectural, I think, was a feature of post-revolutionary France. It was quite neo-Classical as its inspiration was ancient Rome. (I know nothing about ancient Roman knickers.) It comes just before Empire style which is more the Jane Austen sort of thing, I think.

Bags Tue 12-Feb-13 08:16:40

Thanks, absent.

j08 Tue 12-Feb-13 08:30:35

Empire line dresses are very pretty.

Ariadne Tue 12-Feb-13 08:51:02

Gosh, absent I am impressed! Could you do a bit of research into Roman knickers now, please?

(Actually, aren't knickers as such a fairly new invention? I think women could just "go" wherever when they wore long skirts)

kittylester Tue 12-Feb-13 09:38:49

My mum does that now Ariadne - oops probably spoiled her chances with messenger now grin

Anne58 Tue 12-Feb-13 09:42:30

Somehow I doubt it kitty

absent Tue 12-Feb-13 09:45:17

Ariadne Funny you should say that. No sooner had I posted than I started wondering about underwear in ancient Rome. grin I think when knickers were first around they were regarded as garments worn only by women of easy virtue. Given how capacious they were, that is further evidence that concealment is far more titillating than exposure.

Sexual arousal – bloomers versus thongs. Discuss. grin

Ariadne Tue 12-Feb-13 12:12:58

No, don't!!!

NfkDumpling Tue 12-Feb-13 12:21:13

I understood that knickers came into being with the fashion for hooped crinolines. Ladies needed something to cover their modesty if the whole thing tipped or was blown up. No problem with twisted gussets though - they didn't have a gusset. Just two legs. Thus a pair.
