Sorry, I know this is both a gross subject and a ridiculous one, but I seriously would like the benefit of your opinion. Who is being unreasonable, my dh or me?!
So, we have just sat outside on sun chairs, enjoying glorious weather and he decides to start chopping his toe nails, all the nails landing in the grass by where I sitting and where we are walking indoors and outdoors, with bare feet. I ask him to stop because I’ll be getting toe nails pressed into the soles of my feet and he is cross with me! Admittedly he stops, but now he’s moody with me. Who is being unreasonable please?!

I’m with you and Foxygran NO!

I'd probably think 'yuk' as well, although what with them being natural, I suppose they'd get absorbed into the soil eventually. Walking on a toe nail would freak me out.

I do have a kind of experience of stepping on a toe nail. I had something in my shoe the other day, poking at my heel. I shook my shoe out and couldn't see anything but it was still there. Then I got into some brighter light and I found one of my cats' claws in there! I'd recently clipped their nails as they're indoor cats and it must have shot into my shoe. Yuk.

I thought this thread was going to be about human waste or soiled nappies, not something as ordinary as cutting toe nails

The only thing that could make it gross is if you had visitors at the time - in which case it would be gross wherever he did it.

The garden seems a sensible and ecological place to cut your toe nails, the nail clippings will very quickly rot away or be eaten by something small.

I'd be annoyed because, quite frankly, I find the idea of watching someone cut their toe nails, whilst I'm relaxing in the garden, is rather disgusting! Get him to pick them up, one by one, and put them in the dustbin!

Many years ago there used to be a television programme during which couples were asked personal questions about each other. The rather sophisticated actor from the Schweppes advertisement and his wife took part one week and she was asked what was his most irritating habit. Without hesitation she replied, "Leaving his toenail clippings in the bidet", thus undoing, I suspect, a very lucrative contract.

Nothing gross about it at all! Until my podiatrist took on the job to save me from chopping off more than the nail, I'd spend many a happy hour cutting them in the garden and watching the ants scurrying off with the clippings to their nest. I was fascinated by the power on display as each piece was dragged up and over all sorts of obstacles. Very exhausting just watching! shock

Maybe ask him to move his chair onto the grass for said toe nail clipping? Then as they sink into the grass they will be out of the way, hygienically disposed of and hopefully a tiny bit of fertiliser for the lawn?

I’d say anything you are tempted to pick up of tidy away needs to be sorted out before it adds to your need to tidy Foxygran ?

Late DH used to sit on the stairs to clip his toenails! Apparently the second stair from the bottom was just the right height for him to reach. Didn't bother me as he used to Hoover up afterwards.

annep1 Wed 03-Jul-19 06:40:38

Of course it wouldn't matter where if he hoovered up afterwards Bluebelle.
Rufus I can hardly bear to read that. Yuk!
I personally think toenail clipping is a private affair done in the bathroom preferably.

harrigran Wed 03-Jul-19 07:31:16

I am with you Foxygran, gross. I have visions of large chunks of horny nails so not pleasant.
I cut my toenails in the bathroom, over a sheet of kitchen paper which is then folded and discarded in the bin, why would you not ?

DanniRae Wed 03-Jul-19 08:16:18

Yuk - I would have objected too.

Foxygran Wed 03-Jul-19 08:26:13

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts. All those who agreed with me - sorry, you’re not invited to my party ☹️
All those who think that toenails under bare feet are great are invited to my garden party tomorrow. There are lots of fantastically huge grey chunks for you to stomp on! ?Bring your grandchildren too as there will be a paddling pool, so definitely no shoes needed. Bring nail scissors ✂️ if you like and I’m sure we can think of a good party game!!
Haha ?

annep1 Wed 03-Jul-19 09:58:08

Aagh! I'm so glad I'm not invited. Lol

inishowen Wed 03-Jul-19 10:03:35

I would be glad he's doing it outside! I find nail clippings on our lounge floor and he swears it's not him. I used to accuse my son but he no longer lives here.

henetha Wed 03-Jul-19 10:20:23

I wouldn't be thrilled, but there are worse things at sea.
(or in the garden!) smile

polnan Wed 03-Jul-19 10:24:13

we are all different,, me? I wouldn`t like it.

bathroom for ablutions every time

sarahellenwhitney Wed 03-Jul-19 10:24:55

Am I to believe you wont be asking friends round for 'afternoon tea on the lawn ' grin

jaylucy Wed 03-Jul-19 10:36:56

Oh some blokes are just big kids sulking over silly things!
Quite frankly, I'd prefer that anybody sitting next to me, outside in the garden on a sunny day should NOT clip their toe nails at all ! Just out of courtesy, he could very well have either moved away or gone back into the house for 5 minutes to do it, if he considered it that urgent. Maybe you should do yours next time you are outside and see how he likes it!

Foxygran Wed 03-Jul-19 10:56:02

Just as well we’re all different!!!

Rufus2 Wed 03-Jul-19 10:58:56

Maybe you should do yours next time
Better still, get him to do yours next time whilst he's at it. He might even suck your toes first to soften them up, especially if he's got arthritic wrists. grin

Riggie Wed 03-Jul-19 11:20:33

I'd rather they were outside than scattered around the bedroom carpet...

Flowerofthewest Wed 03-Jul-19 11:28:57

My late mil had a lodger who would blow his nose on her curtains!!

CrazyGrandma2 Wed 03-Jul-19 11:30:46

Neither of you is right or wrong. Personally, I just wish my DH could still cut his own toenails.

BusterTank Wed 03-Jul-19 11:31:19

It could be worse be could be taking a dump in the garden . Don't sweat the small stuff .

Johno Wed 03-Jul-19 11:42:59

Cutting nails sat beside you is NOT on. It makes no real difference where it happens - except at the dinner table. If you had asked him not to because you dont like it near you then that makes it a matter of respect - if he does not stop he does not respect you.
