Bloody football!

Evening all,

Just come through to the sitting room after supper, and find that from 7.30 until 10.00 BBC 1 are showing bloody football!

That's not what I pay my licence fee for. Fortunately Mr P isn't a football fan, so it won't be on here.

The rest of the BBC offerings for this evening aren't exactly inspiring either.........

Suppose I'd better get the tin helmet out and duck behind the sofa, and wait for those who are pro the game to start saying that there isn't enough football on tv etc.

No football in this house

But there's so many channels available now one can always find something

There are many football fans who will be pleased to see a match on terrestrial TV

I love tennis and adore the Wimbledon coverage

But many complain about that

We watched Only Connect and University Challenge as usual last night, then DH watched the second half of the match. The wrong half for a Yorkshireman, apparently. smile

It doesn’t bother me. We’ve only one TV set but there’s plenty to do apart from watching it and we can record anything these days. And it is the FA Cup, when the small clubs and far-from-overpaid talented players get their chance to shine.

I hate football and my DH is addicted to it. Fortunately we have two TVs.

This discussion has been on for years.. all the BBC channels and they have to disrupt BBC1... why can`t they have a sports channel, and leave regular programmes where they are...

Scottiebear Tue 07-Jan-20 10:05:27

Neither DH or myself football fans. But can usually find something on Sky to watch instead. However, I will take this opportunity to say that I have never known the TV to be so poor over Christmas holidays. Apart from a Christmas Carol, which was excellent, we struggled to find anything to watch.

Mollygo Tue 07-Jan-20 10:06:05

Jigsaws or puzzles are my antidote to football, I can do them whilst not watching but still be there to appreciate his excitement about the goals, though to be fair my DH only watches Liverpool. Monday is my favourite night with all the quizzes especially Only Connect.

Callistemon Tue 07-Jan-20 10:08:39

Come and help with this jigsaw please, Mollygo
It's a world map, tiny pieces. There is a lot of blue!
I was helping DH with it and caught Only Connect on catch-up.

Mollygo Tue 07-Jan-20 10:14:57

Callistemon I’d love to help! My mum had a huge world jigsaw with countries capitals. My favourite bit was finding the bits of Madagascar. I still remember Antananarivo -the capital.

Slight change of subject, can i ask someone which Midsomer was on last night, we have had 4 new episodes here so far and I wondered if there are any more.
They were on before Christmas on Flemish 1.

MerylStreep Tue 07-Jan-20 10:19:39

Off topic, I know, but did anyone see Valerie Singleton on House of Games? I was slightly embarrassed for her, she didn't seem to understand what was going on. In the last round she just sat back with her arms folded ? I wonder if she understands that she has another 4 to go.

Callistemon Tue 07-Jan-20 10:24:32

I've just tackled Antarctica- blue and lighter blue!
I'm sure some pieces are missing even though it was still sealed.

Interesting Dumpling - I have long thought that football on the telly serves the same function as the Roman Games did -- keeps the populace contented and "on side".

Callistemon Tue 07-Jan-20 10:41:29

On whose side?

annsixty Tue 07-Jan-20 10:41:30

I have no interest in football but I feel it is quite churlish to begrudge football fans a chance to watch on terrestrial tv, especially older fans who can not afford sky.
There is plenty of choice on other channels or do as I do and record favourites for when I can’t find anything to watch.
We all on here have tablets, laptops etc so bbc -player or itv hub is available to us all.

popsis71 Tue 07-Jan-20 10:43:17

Don't know why that last came up with a line thro' part of it.

BladeAnnie Tue 07-Jan-20 10:43:46

I love football - converted my DOH too!! However, I do understand it's not everyone's cup of tea - it wouldn't do for us all to be the same would it? ?

Neilspurgeon0 Tue 07-Jan-20 10:43:50

I’ve said it lots of times before: “22 grown men chasing a bag of wind across a green field that would much better support a small herd of cows”

Callistemon Tue 07-Jan-20 10:46:04

You probably used this popsis - - - - as a dash but didn't leave a space

So - this - becomes -this-

Callistemon Tue 07-Jan-20 10:47:24

It didn't work!! grin

Why not?
why not

Because you need two -- --

Charlie 2753 ,I am also a Liverpool fan so am really enjoying the football at the moment.
What a Game the other night when the Liverpool youngsters took on Everton.
The only problem with football is that a lot of the Games start at 4.30 pm on Sunday.
That messes up our Sunday evening meal.
Think I will ring up Anfield to see if they can change the time.

When are the BBC going to get their own Sports Channel? They have one for old BBC series now, which I'm not interested in, so if they had a Sports channel too that would be great. Win, win!!

Margs Tue 07-Jan-20 11:06:22

Just how has an inane sport like football become so overwhelmingly dominant?

Newspapers (especially the tabloids) are just as bad - several pages (double figures) at the back are wall-to-wall football, and most weekdays there is a supplement of several middle pages that are devoted to.......football.

Also the front page will often feature an item on the spending habits of footballers wives, the latest Premiership footballers marriage breakdown, the latest antics of one of the Beckham family.....please give us a break!!

Oopsminty Tue 07-Jan-20 11:13:26

This has reminded me of the Mitchell and Webb clip

I love football. Even drove 2 hours to watch the game on dark, damp Sunday evening. And it has to be on TV so I can record it - and watch it back when I get home. wink

Can’t see everything at the game so seeing it again through the eyes of the cameraman is great!

And yes, it was the FA Cup Round 3. The competition which gives clubs from every tier the chance to compete against each other.

If you missed it, Eastenders are showing two one hour programmes on Friday - which will no doubt have a knock on effect and ruin someone else’s evening! grin

Liverpool fans - there’s no catching you this season. Well played I say. And I’m still sad you have Adrián as your second goalie. We all adore him in East London and didn’t want him to go, but so pleased he found a Manager who has faith in him. He’s such a lovely guy. ❤️

FA Cup match. Really exciting, game of two halves as they say. Very little live football on BBC. Personally would rather watch sport than soaps or quizzes anytime.
