To wonder why people don’t read the thread

Ok so I probably am BU. I just don’t understand how it happens. Do posters literally read the original post and reply without reading ANY other posts ? I’ve seen some threads where OP has returned several times to say the issue is sorted but posters still keep posting ! I’ve heard the excuse of not having time to read the thread but in that case why are you spending time on GN at all ??

Atqui Sat 30-Jan-21 12:49:32

PamelaJ1 I so agree. One feels like saying “ I just said that”!
By the way what is BU?

Sounds very familiar!

Yes and why shouldn't they, especially, as in this case, there's a question that they choose to answer?

Also, if the opening post is essentially a complaint, as this one is (it's also one that keeps recurring, though that's not your fault), posters often want to answer the complaint without reading on to see if everyone else is complaining too.

This might be because, like me, they find such opening posts tiresome and, to put it bluntly, unreasonable.

I also think it's unreasonable to expect people to accept that a thread has been 'sorted'. It hasn't been sorted if someone reading it for the first time has something to say. Why shouldn't they add their tuppenceworth? Those who think 'sorted' could just leave the thread alone and, you know, stop annoying themselves by reading it.

In short, you can't 'chair' Gransnet threads.

Lucca Sat 30-Jan-21 13:13:07

The one that prompted me to start this thread contained several posts from the OP saying that the issue had been resolved so she didn’t need any more advice.

I particularly notice those threads where a spammer has hijacked a thread that is months or years old. If a thread has been revived with a post that is blatant advertising, I report it. Once it has been reported, GNHQ delete the spam post and add a message. Meanwhile, other posters then blithely offer advice, suggestions etc to the original poster about a problem that is perhaps a couple of years old.

It’s not a huge ask to (a) notice if a post is obviously spam, and (b) check the date of the original post if you see a thread with a ‘deleted by Gransnet’ message as the most recent post.

Maggiemaybe Sat 30-Jan-21 13:23:50

Perhaps people just want to be part of the discussion, perhaps they just want to tell others about their own experiences, perhaps the thread’s meandered into other areas, as they often do. I actually find the posts telling others to stop posting more irritating than any duplications.

Yes, this. GN is an informal chat site, not a public meeting.

Namsnanny Sat 30-Jan-21 13:29:26

Even being told someone was going to call the police on me!
That made me laugh felice!!

they see what they want to see
Well that's the most annoying part of reading all the replies to be honest. I feel so exasperated when someone tells the op to do somthing they've told us they have already tried!!

Oh well none of us are perfect smile

Kim19 Sat 30-Jan-21 13:35:40

Lucca, I'm with you all the way. Even think I know the specific thread you are talking about. I find it a somewhat arrogant attitude when someone comes on here and says 'I haven't read the other posts but......'. However... nowt as queer as folk. I guess mutual tolerance might be the name of the game here. Whew!

Doodledog Sat 30-Jan-21 13:39:07

Those who think 'sorted' could just leave the thread alone and, you know, stop annoying themselves by reading it.

It's not just when a thread is 'sorted' that it's annoying, though. It's when someone comes along and ignores everything that's gone before (saying they don't have time to read it) and asks others to spend their time recapping or explaining what's happened.

They don't do it in so many words, but that's what it boils down to when a post says 'I haven't read the three page thread, but what about xyz (that was discussed at length on page 1)? Is everyone else meant to break off what they are discussing and use their own time to bring them up to speed?

Perhaps should have added that I never look back in a game. It is a game, after all.

Baggs put it so well, totally agree.

Not yours.

If the OP came back and we could see the message in green it would be so much easier.
I dont have time to read through pages and pages of the threads so I try to skim through to see if the OP has come back and replied, sometimes I expect I miss it, because I didn’t see it.

Totally agree, this option is used on other forums.

Another thing that annoys me is that when I revisit a post I have commented on, I return to the beginning of the post. On another forum I used daily, it returns me back to when I last read the thread so I only read new messages.

Maggiemaybe Sat 30-Jan-21 13:52:57

Teacheranne, click on the three dots in a post, choose Bookmark, and you’ll be taken back to that place in the thread.

Of course no-one "is meant to" bring others up to speed. It's a simple choice. Bring people up to speed if you want to; don't if you don't want to.

I expect that's what happens except for when moany-pants(es) come along and complain about being 'expected' to do somethng they don't want to do. No-one can force you to respond to an annoying post. Other people's perceived expectations are irrelevant to one's own behaviour on a GN thread.

Elegran Sat 30-Jan-21 14:00:31

The option for an OP who has the answer to their question to be able to close it with a thankyou post is a good one. Then it would stop collecting answers and going on for ever. Of course, if someone else had the same question, they would start another identical thread, which would collect the same answers and so ad infinitum.

Elegran Sat 30-Jan-21 14:02:26

The OP could be their own "chair" and close down discussion of that question once they had enough info.

Chewbacca Sat 30-Jan-21 14:09:32

Agree with you Lucca. And I know which thread you're referring to.

Atqui Sat 30-Jan-21 14:29:36

If a thread is very long and I CBA to read it all , I wouldn’t comment , as I would think I might be repeating what’s gone before, but that’s just my humble opinion, and apologies if someone has already said that?

Baggs Sat 30-Jan-21 14:30:19

Elegran

How can an OP close down discussion, elegran?

I agree she can say her question has been answered or that she has got lots of good stuff out of a discussion, and stuff like that, but if people want to blether on they do and nothing except the thread's reaching its thousand post limit, or deletion by HQ, will stop them.

The number of threads I've seen over the years where people say "Let's draw a line under this" and it doesn't happen. You must have seen that too.
