Being called granny

I have grandchildren who all call me granny which I love as my mother and grandmother were also called granny, but on 3 separate occasions last year people I didn't know said when the grandson was calling me how they would hate to be called granny as it would make them feel old etc, I just said I loved it and left it at that but I do think it was incredibly rude and wondered if anyone else had encountered the same problem and knew of an answer.

Just ignore them if you like it that's all that matters. My grandchildren called me Nanny when they were small but now they are mostly grown they call me Grandma and my newest small grandson calls me Granny as that's the term his Mum is used to for Grandmothers, I don't mind what they call me as long as they do. smile

I'm also a Granny, I chose to be called by that name and love it.

In fact, that's what I would say to people who made rude comments, thus firmly putting the onus on them to apologise!

I'm Granny and I love it.

Jane10 Sat 28-Jan-17 13:52:23

Ignore them. They're just jealous! I'm a Gran and proud to be.

I love being Granny. Some of my friends are called Nanny, but where I come from that means a goat or a servant.

It probably depends on how you viewed your own granny if you had one.

I think its up to you suemag and if its any comfort the queens grandchildren called her Granny. I'm a Nanna as that is what I called my grandmother and I like it but never Nanny. Its juts a personal preference thing. My DH doesn't like any 'handle' Uncle, Grandpa anything he ask always just to be called by his name Grumpy Sod oops Peter.

ninathenana Sat 28-Jan-17 14:50:29

Nobody's buisness but yours. If your happy that's all that matters.
Personally I prefer nana. Granny is what my GC called my mum, she was fine with it.

annodomini Sat 28-Jan-17 14:54:16

You might like to point out that the Queen's grandchildren call her Granny and the late Queen Mother was also known as Granny to her grandchildren. My grandmothers and my mother were all grannies as am I and my sisters. If it's good enough for the Queen....

annodomini Sat 28-Jan-17 14:55:26

Sorry Teetime. I jumped too soon to the last post.

I think it can be a regional thing
I live in an area where most youngsters use the term Nanny or Nan sometimes Nanna.
So when they are talking about me to one of my 2 DGS who live in the same area they often say 'your Nanny or Nan'.
I don't usually correct them.
I will always say I'm xxx's Gran when talking about myself.
And I do get a look or an 'oh' sometimes, but just ignore it.
I come from a long line of 'Grans'
I loved GMs and wanted to carry on the tradition.

My DGS are still toddlers so at the moment I'm 'Gan'
If that sticks its fine
My other baby DGS lives in Lancs
My DS & DiL refer to me as Grandma which just as happy with.

From personal experience the first time each of my GS said 'Gan' (still waiting on the 3rd)
My heart leapt with joy

Count yourself lucky!
I'd loved to be called Granny or Gran but my DSS insists that DGS (3) calls me by my first name and my DH (his dad) is referred to as Granddad.
DSS's mum died long before DH and I met but that doesn't seem to make any difference.
The in-laws are a different nationality and are called the equivalent of granny/granddad in their language.
I find it very awkward because we also have a young son who obviously calls me mum so it's feels odd being called by my first name by the grandson.

If you're happy with being called Granny, just enjoy it.

Well I'm Nanna to one side and Nanna Maggie to the other, but I couldn't care less what they choose to call me - Gran, Granny, Grandma, Grandmama, Nan, Old Gimmer etc - just as long as I am one!

These people are just rude, Suemag. Ignore them. smile

NanKate Sat 28-Jan-17 16:32:30

My oldest GS calls me Nan and the youngest GS calls me Nanny. Just like my DS called my mum and I just love it.

Recently I remembered what I called both my grandmothers and it was quite odd. My maternal GM I called Precious Nanny and my paternal GM Sis. I realised many years later her name was Priscilla and everyone including me called her that, which was fine by her. smile

GrandmaMoira Sat 28-Jan-17 17:23:15

I'm Grandma and would also be happy to be called Granny. I don't like Nanny as my Mother always said as Varian says, that a nanny is a servant or a goat.

KatyK Sat 28-Jan-17 17:27:23

Im Nan smile

KatyK Sat 28-Jan-17 17:27:39

or I'm even

Chewbacca Sat 28-Jan-17 17:29:17

I'm Granny and I'm totally happy with that. My DIL's mum is known as Grandma and she's happy with that too. Not keen on Nana but each to their own. I don't give a damn if anyone else thinks Granny or Grandma is "ageing ", it's what makes my grandchildren happy that concerns me.

grannyqueenie Sat 28-Jan-17 17:34:59

My grandparents all died before I was born but both grandmothers were always spoken about as granny. My mum opted for grandma, she thought it sounded younger. I reverted to granny as I wanted to be different to my mum, in a whole heap of ways, I love being a granny, so who cares what anyone else thinks!

Anniebach Sat 28-Jan-17 17:39:19

I refused to be called anything but Grannie , the youngest does call me Bro, if anyone would find this offensive don't play Super Mario with your grandchildren smile

Christinefrance Sat 28-Jan-17 17:40:46

It's no one else's business which name your grandchildren choose to call you Suemag, just enjoy being with them, they grow up so quickly. I am Nanny and happy with that, I don't feel it denotes servitude. smile

Jomarie Sat 28-Jan-17 17:43:13

I'm Granny (although it's often pronounced "Gwanny") and am so happy that my children cared enough to ask me what I would prefer to be called - my own Granny was a wonderful sweet, funny, kind and wicked lady (in the nicest possible way)- it brings her back to life again for me - if I'm half as good a granny as she was to me and my sisters then my grandchildren will be very lucky!!! My DGS aged four and a half laughed out loud when his teacher said "there's your Nanny come to collect you" (from school) he said "she's my Granny - she's not a goat!" His teacher took it well and didn't make that mistake again. Most common moniker round this area seems to be Nana or Nanny.

harrigran Sat 28-Jan-17 17:50:12

I am grandma and happy to be so, other GM wanted to be granny.

ginny Sat 28-Jan-17 17:51:21

I'm now Nan to my 14 year old DGS, was Nana. I am now Nana to 1 year old DGS although he usually says 'Moo' when he sees me. I have some China cows on a shelf that he always wants to see and of course we always say 'Moo'. I wonder if it will stick and I will be Nan Moo. !
