STOP CLAPPING!

I heard on the news today that Manchester University Students Union has banned clapping, saying that it makes some students ANXIOUS !!! It asks that students do a 'Jazz-Hands' display instead.

I've never, in my life, heard anything so stupid!

ANXIOUS? Being a soldier at fifteen (as many boys were during the last two world wars), not having enough food or water, finding out that you've got some awful incurable disease, suffering from all the dreadful consequences of a tsunami - all these (and many more) are anxiety-ridden situations. But CLAPPING?

GET REAL!

(Though if I were surrounded by crowds of people all doing 'Jazz-Hands', I might feel a tad uncomfortable!)

Oh dear, parodies of 'If'.

I agree with lemongrove - they're easy to do, but they're not Poetry. (The ones on here don't even 'scan'!) So no, trisher, you're sooo wrong - 'it's not bloody difficult, done in 15 minutes'. To compare your parody to Kipling's 'If' is ludicrous!

I wonder if the parody bt Trisher had been in praise of the government rather than the opposition IF it might have been better recieved by some wink

lemongrove Wed 10-Oct-18 08:16:28

Nope, not at all (it’s expected that politics would be brought into it though!)

Maw wrote the better parody ( sorry trisher) yours was a good try though nobody can seriously think you can knock up a great poem in 15 mins.

A plea!
Could we discuss either snowflakery/student jazz hands/ poetry without politics being invoked on this thread?
Is this at all possible I wonder?

PECS Wed 10-Oct-18 08:47:12

Trouble is,Lenomgrove a person's values, attitudes and choices are often underpinned by their political thinking. Makes it tricky to separate it out! The word snowflakery in itself is a political construction. The decision to change the poem If was based on a political view, the proposal to introduce the use of Jazz hands was about greater equality & raising disability awareness which is steeped in political thinking. Not sure how you debate anything without one's political perspective colouring your opinion!

PECS Wed 10-Oct-18 10:03:40

Unles it is about how you prefer your parsnips cooked!

trisher Wed 10-Oct-18 10:05:28

There is probably a thread about that somewhere PECS.

lemongrove Wed 10-Oct-18 20:18:23

This isn’t the politics thread, and only trisher and PECS so far has put anything political into it.
Will assume in that case you are both so steeped in the subject that you can’t even comment on any thread without taking political sides.Pity!

PECS Wed 10-Oct-18 22:20:31

I do not think I took any political 'side'!
trisher parodied IF alluding to the Labour Party, you criticised it. I wondered if it had been, say in praise of TreezaMay, you may have preferred it! That is not taking sides!

I tried to explain why I felt that politics did have a place on this particular debate. You disagree. That is OK!

trisher Thu 11-Oct-18 11:32:42

Oha Treeza May one- I could start!

If you can keep your job when all about you,
The jackles gather waiting for a chance
If you can stick rigidly to Brexit
And even do a party conference dance

Anybdy want to carry on?

lemongrove Thu 11-Oct-18 11:46:35

You have just proved my point trisher that some on GN
( fortunately not many) cannot cope with threads without raising tribal political points ( or rather, silly point scoring)
A bit sad really.
I could do a Jeremy Corbyn parody..... but that would be going down to your level, so won’t.

trisher Thu 11-Oct-18 11:52:03

Oh lemon if you can do a Jeremy Corbyn one do start and I'll join in. I always believe in balance, and I've posted 1 and a bit so its your turn!

PECS Thu 11-Oct-18 11:56:50

lemongrove I just want to clarify again that I have not been "tribal". I reiterate that the subjects you felt could be talked about without political references were in fact political issues..whatever your tribal perspective!

lemongrove Thu 11-Oct-18 12:11:19

Oh trisher......no thanks, I leave all politics to the correct threads.

PECS I disagree with your confident assertion that everything has a political angle ( it doesn’t) and in fact, apart from you two posters, everybody else has managed to reply without it.
Most posters feel jazz hands is a stupid idea ( by just using common sense.)

PECS Thu 11-Oct-18 12:28:10

Correct threads!!??

The decision to add jazz hands to clapping was a vote taken at a Studends Union. Like it or not it was a political decision. Not party politics but politics!
